Chapter 4: The Daughter Richard Hid From Everyone
The word hung in the air.
Daughter.
Sarah stared at Richard.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at Richard.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Because sometimes the most painful truths were not the ones people said.
They were the ones people failed to deny.
“Richard?””
Her voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Richard looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
She stepped back.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
Vanessa watched them carefully.
Not with sadness.
With satisfaction.
Like she had been waiting years for this exact moment.
Richard looked at the photograph on the table.
The image was old.
The colors were faded.
But the memories were sharp.
He remembered the apartment.
The arguments.
The promises.
The night he walked away.
The night he convinced himself he was starting over.
“I was going to tell you,” he whispered.
Sarah laughed once.
A broken sound.
“When?””
Richard looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s the problem.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You didn’t forget to tell me.””
She shook her head.
“You chose not to.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Exactly.””
Richard turned toward her.
“Don’t pretend you care about Sarah.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You think this is easy for me?””
“Easy?””
His voice rose.
“You came into my family, lied to my son, and almost got him hurt.””
Her eyes flashed.
“And you took my daughter away from me.””
Silence.
The sentence landed harder than anything else.
Sarah looked at Richard.
“Your daughter?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word barely left his mouth.
Sarah looked like she had been waiting for him to say it.
Not because she wanted to hear it.
Because she needed to know if he would finally tell the truth.
“Who is she?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“Her name is Lily.””
Sarah’s face changed.
“How old?””
Richard swallowed.
“Ten.””
Sarah looked toward the hospital hallway.
Ten.
The same age as the child they had spent years trying to protect.
The same age as the child who could have been part of their family.
“You have a ten-year-old daughter…”
Her voice cracked.
“And I never knew.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Sarah, listen to me.””
“No.””
She raised her hand.
“I listened to you last night.””
That stopped him.
“I listened when you told Noah he was pretending.””
Richard looked away.
“I was wrong.””
“Yes.””
Her voice trembled.
“You were.””
The honesty hurt more than anger.
Richard sat down slowly.
“I was twenty-three.””
Sarah looked at him.
“That doesn’t excuse it.””
“I know.””
He rubbed his hands together.
“I was young. Vanessa and I were together. We were already struggling. When she got pregnant, I panicked.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“You didn’t panic.””
She stepped forward.
“You ran.””
Richard looked at her.
“Vanessa…”
“You disappeared.””
Her voice grew sharper.
“You changed your number. You moved. You told yourself you were protecting everyone.””
She pointed at the photograph.
“But you were protecting yourself.””
Sarah looked between them.
“What happened to Lily?””
Vanessa looked down.
“She raised her with my parents for a while.””
Richard spoke quietly.
“I sent money.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Money.””
Richard flinched.
“I tried.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You tried to feel better.””
Sarah noticed something.
For all of Vanessa’s anger…
There was pain underneath it.
Real pain.
“You used Noah.””
Vanessa looked at her.
Sarah continued.
“You used our son because you were angry at Richard.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
And that silence was enough.
“You wanted him to lose something.””
Vanessa’s eyes became cold.
“I wanted him to understand.””
“By hurting an innocent child?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I didn’t mean for Noah to get hurt.””
Sarah’s expression hardened.
“But he did.””
The hospital announcement echoed through the hallway.
A nurse called for assistance.
People walked past them.
But their small group felt separated from the world.
Richard looked at Vanessa.
“Why now?””
She looked back at him.
“Because Lily found you.””
Richard froze.
“What?””
Vanessa reached into her bag again.
This time, she pulled out a folded letter.
“She found your name.””
Richard stared at the paper.
“Where?””
“She searched.””
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
“She wanted to know who her father was.””
Sarah watched Richard’s face.
The guilt there was impossible to miss.
“She knows?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She knows everything.””
Richard looked devastated.
“What did she say?””
Vanessa hesitated.
And for the first time since she appeared, she looked uncertain.
“She asked why you never wanted her.””
Richard closed his eyes.
That question destroyed him.
Because he had spent years avoiding it.
And now a ten-year-old child had asked it directly.
“I never…”
He stopped.
Because the truth was complicated.
He never hated Lily.
He never forgot her.
But he had chosen a life where forgetting was easier.
A life where he could pretend the past didn’t exist.
Sarah picked up the photograph again.
“You had another child.””
Richard nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“I don’t think you do.””
He looked at her.
“You keep saying you made mistakes.””
Her voice became softer.
“But mistakes are accidents.””
She placed the photograph down.
“This was a choice.””
Richard had no defense.
Because she was right.
Meanwhile, in another part of the hospital, Dr. Miles reviewed the security footage again.
Something bothered him.
The missing medication.
The hidden access.
The message.
The photograph.
None of it felt random.
He paused the footage.
Vanessa leaving Noah’s room.
Then he zoomed in.
His eyes narrowed.
“Wait.””
Nurse Ava looked over.
“What?””
Dr. Miles pointed at the screen.
“Look at her hand.””
Ava leaned closer.
Vanessa wasn’t holding Noah’s medication vial.
She was holding something else.
A small memory card.
Dr. Miles stood immediately.
“She wasn’t just hiding medicine.””
“What was on that?””
“I don’t know.””
He grabbed the printout.
“But I think Vanessa wanted us to find the vial.””
Ava frowned.
“Why?””
“Because the vial made everyone look at her.””
He looked at the frozen image.
“But whatever was on that card…”
His expression darkened.
“That was what she really wanted hidden.””
Back in the hallway, Richard stared at Vanessa.
“Where is Lily?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You want to see her now?””
“Yes.””
A small smile appeared on Vanessa’s face.
Not cruel.
Not happy.
Something worse.
Regret.
“You don’t get to decide when you become a father.””
Richard went silent.
Sarah watched him absorb the words.
Then Vanessa reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out her phone.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
Richard looked at the screen.
“What?””
Vanessa pressed play.
A video appeared.
It showed a little girl sitting at a kitchen table.
A drawing was in front of her.
A family.
Four people.
The little girl looked at the camera.
And spoke.
“Mom says my dad has another family.””
Richard’s face changed.
The girl continued.
“I just want to know why he didn’t want me.””
The video stopped.
Richard looked broken.
Sarah couldn’t even speak.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“That’s the daughter you abandoned.””
Before Richard could answer, his phone rang.
Everyone looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Richard hesitated.
Then answered.
A small voice came through.
A child’s voice.
“Hello?””
Richard froze.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“Are you my dad?””
Richard’s eyes filled with tears.
Because after ten years of silence…
The child he never met was finally on the other end of the phone.
But before he could answer, another voice interrupted.
A man.
Angry.
Threatening.
“You need to stay away from Lily.””
Richard stood up.
“Who is this?””
The man lowered his voice.
“You should have thought about your daughter before you destroyed her life.””
The call ended.
Richard stared at the phone.
And everyone realized the truth.
Vanessa was not the only person hiding secrets.
May you like
Someone else had been protecting the truth about Lily.
And that person was now warning Richard to disappear.
