Chapter 9: The Battle For My Children

I didn’t sleep after Nathan told me.

Not because I was surprised.

Because somehow, I wasn’t.

The moment he said custody, every memory rearranged itself.

The comments.

The questions.

The criticism.

Diane telling me I was too emotional.

Vanessa saying I spoiled the children.

The way they always acted like they knew better than me.

They weren’t criticizing me.

They were building a case.

A case against my ability to be a mother.

The next morning, Rachel called.

“Emily, we need to talk.””

Her voice was serious.

“What happened?””

“There was a new filing.””

My stomach dropped.

“From Diane?””

“Yes.””

“What is it?””

Rachel paused.

“Temporary custody request.””

I closed my eyes.

“They actually did it.””

“Yes.””

My hands shook.

“What are they claiming?””

“That you created an unsafe environment.””

I almost laughed.

“Because Vanessa hit me?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Rachel’s voice softened.

“They’re claiming you are unstable.””

The word hurt.

Because it was exactly what people said when women stopped accepting disrespect.

“On what evidence?””

“They included statements from family members.””

I knew immediately.

“Who?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Your father.””

I felt sick.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The betrayal was becoming impossible to measure.

My own family.

My own husband.

Everyone.

Rachel continued.

“But there’s something strange.””

“What?””

“They also included a financial argument.””

“What financial argument?””

“That you are unable to provide for the children because the house is under dispute.””

I stared at the wall.

So that was their plan.

Take the house.

Then use losing the house as proof I was incapable.

It was cruel.

It was calculated.

And it almost worked.

Almost.

That afternoon, I met Rachel at her office.

She placed a folder in front of me.

“We need to build your defense.””

I opened it.

“What do we have?””

“Your mortgage records.””

“Good.””

“Your employment history.””

“Good.””

“School records showing your involvement with the children.””

I nodded.

Then Rachel added:

“And one more thing.””

“What?””

She slid a document across the desk.

“A witness statement.””

I looked at it.

“From who?””

Rachel watched my face carefully.

“Vanessa.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She contacted me.””

“Why?””

Rachel leaned back.

“She wants to cooperate.””

I almost laughed.

“Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“That woman hates me.””

“Maybe.””

Rachel looked at the document.

“Or maybe she hates what they did more.””

I didn’t trust it.

Not even slightly.

But I read the statement.

And the first line made my blood run cold.

“I was present when Diane and Nathan discussed how to remove Emily from the house.””

I read it again.

Then again.

“Nathan?””

Rachel nodded.

“According to Vanessa, your husband was involved.””

I looked down.

The pain was still there.

But something else was growing.

Understanding.

Nathan had spent years trying to stay in the middle.

But there was no middle.

Not when people were destroying your family.

That evening, Nathan came to see me.

He looked exhausted.

“Emily.””

I didn’t invite him in.

“I know about the custody request.””

His face changed.

“I was going to tell you.””

“Of course.””

“I didn’t know they filed it.””

“But you knew they wanted it.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

I studied him.

“Did you ever agree?””

“No.””

“Did you ever help them?””

His silence lasted too long.

My heart sank.

“Nathan.””

“I gave them information.””

I felt numb.

“What information?””

“About your schedule.””

The world went quiet.

“You tracked me?””

“No.””

“Then how did they know?””

He looked away.

“I told them when you were working late.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because I thought they were trying to help.””

I laughed softly.

“Help.””

That word again.

Nathan stepped closer.

“Emily, I know I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You made choices.””

He started crying.

“I never wanted to lose you.””

I shook my head.

“But you were willing to risk losing me.””

He had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily…”

“What?””

His voice dropped.

“They found the original contract.””

My blood went cold.

“What contract?””

Nathan looked terrified.

“The one your father signed.””

I stepped back.

“What does it say?””

Nathan stared at me.

May you like

And then he whispered:

“It says if the marriage ends, the house and children go to my family.””
