Chapter 3: The House That Was Never Hers

The next morning, I returned to my house.

Not because I wanted to go back.

Because I needed my documents.

The deed.

The financial records.

Everything I had spent years building.

The house wasn’t a gift from Nathan.

It wasn’t something his family allowed me to have.

I bought it.

Before we got married.

Before Nathan’s career took off.

Before his family started acting like my life belonged to them.

I unlocked the front door slowly.

The familiar smell hit me immediately.

Lavender from the candles I loved.

Wood polish from the furniture I chose.

Home.

At least, that was what I used to call it.

Then I heard voices.

I froze.

Someone was inside.

I stepped forward.

And my heart sank.

Diane was sitting on my couch.

Vanessa was standing beside the kitchen island.

Like they belonged there.

Like I was the visitor.

“What are you doing here?””

Both women turned.

Vanessa smiled.

“You came back.””

I looked at Diane.

“How did you get inside?””

Diane lifted a key.

“Your husband gave it to us.””

My fingers tightened around my bag.

Of course he did.

Of course Nathan had done something else without asking me.

Vanessa walked closer.

“You need to stop acting emotional and think logically.””

I stared at her.

“You broke into my house.””

She laughed.

“Your house?””

The way she said it made my blood run cold.

Diane stood up.

“Emily, you have always been dramatic.””

I looked between them.

“You’re both unbelievable.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Nathan is under a lot of pressure.””

“From who?””

She smiled.

“From fixing the mess you created.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“I left because you assaulted me.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“You slapped me too.””

“After you hit me.””

“You escalated.””

I stared at her.

There was no shame.

No regret.

Just entitlement.

Diane stepped closer.

“You need to understand something. Nathan has always been a good son.””

I laughed softly.

“And a terrible husband.””

Her face hardened.

“You should be careful.””

“Why?””

“Because without Nathan, you don’t have the life you have now.””

I looked around my living room.

The furniture I bought.

The walls I painted.

The memories I created.

Then I looked back at her.

“You really believe he gave me this?””

Nobody answered.

And that was the answer.

I walked upstairs.

Behind me, Vanessa shouted.

“You’re making a mistake!””

I kept walking.

My hands shook as I opened the bedroom closet.

Inside a locked box were copies of everything important.

I opened it.

And stopped.

Something was missing.

The folder containing our financial records was gone.

My breathing changed.

I searched again.

Nothing.

Then my phone rang.

Nathan.

I answered immediately.

“What did you take?””

Silence.

Then:

“Emily…”

“What did you take?””

His voice lowered.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

My stomach tightened.

“Find out what?””

Nathan hesitated.

And in that moment, I knew.

Whatever came next was something he had been hiding for a long time.

“Emily,” he whispered, “the house isn’t the only thing Vanessa and my mother have been planning.””

I gripped the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

Nathan took a shaky breath.

Then he said something that made the entire world shift beneath my feet.

“They found the original documents from before we got married.””

I went completely still.

“What original documents?””

A long pause.

May you like

Then Nathan answered:

“The ones proving the house was never supposed to be yours alone.””
