Thinking

Chapter 12: The Man Who Started The War

I spent the entire night staring at the ceiling.

Not sleeping.

Not crying.

Just thinking.

My father.

Again.

Every time I thought I had reached the end of the betrayal, another door opened.

Another person stood behind it.

Another secret waited.

By morning, I was exhausted.

But I wasn’t broken.

That was the difference.

The old Emily would have stayed in bed.

The old Emily would have questioned herself.

The old Emily would have tried to understand everyone else before understanding herself.

That woman was gone.

I met Nathan at Rachel’s office.

He looked like he hadn’t slept either.

Good.

Pain was finally reaching him.

Rachel placed a file on the table.

“We received something overnight.””

“What?””

She opened it.

“Your father contacted my office.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

“He wants to testify.””

I stared.

“Against who?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Against Nathan’s family.””

I didn’t know how to feel.

Anger.

Relief.

Confusion.

All of it existed at once.

“Why now?””

Rachel slid a letter across the table.

“He says he has information that could end the entire case.””

I picked up the letter.

My father’s handwriting.

Emily,

I know you may never forgive me.

I don’t blame you.

I made decisions because I thought I was protecting you. I was wrong.

I believed I could control dangerous people by making deals with them.

I didn’t realize I was helping them hurt the person I was trying to protect.

My hands shook.

Rachel continued.

“He wants to meet.””

I looked at Nathan.

He looked away.

For once, neither of us knew what to say.

The meeting happened that evening.

My father looked older.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like guilt had aged him.

He sat across from me.

“I’m sorry.””

I said nothing.

“I know those words don’t fix anything.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“I deserve that.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That Nathan’s family would destroy you.””

I laughed softly.

“So you helped them?””

“I thought I could negotiate.””

“Negotiate?””

My voice rose.

“You negotiated my life.””

He lowered his head.

“Yes.””

Silence.

Then he pulled out a folder.

“I have the original correspondence.””

Rachel opened it.

Inside were printed emails.

The missing messages.

The ones we didn’t have.

My father pointed.

“This is where everything started.””

I read the first email.

From Diane.

To my father.

The words made my stomach twist.

“We know Emily will never willingly agree. We need someone she trusts.””

The next email was from my father.

“I understand. I will convince her that this is for her protection.””

I closed my eyes.

My father.

The person who taught me not to trust anyone blindly.

Had become the person I should have questioned.

Then I saw the final email.

The one that changed everything.

It was from Nathan.

Not Diane.

Not Vanessa.

Nathan.

“I can’t do this anymore. I won’t let you take her home or her children.””

I stopped.

My heart raced.

“What?””

Nathan looked up.

“I didn’t send that.””

My father looked at him.

“Yes, you did.””

I stared between them.

“You were against them?””

Nathan nodded slowly.

“Eventually.””

“Eventually?””

His face fell.

“I was wrong before.””

I looked at the email again.

Nathan continued.

“I realized what they were doing.””

“When?””

“After Oliver was born.””

I remembered.

That was when Nathan changed.

When he started spending more time away.

When he became quieter.

I thought he was becoming distant.

Maybe he was becoming afraid.

My father spoke softly.

“After that email, Diane threatened Nathan.””

“With what?””

He looked at me.

“With exposing the documents.””

Rachel leaned forward.

“What documents?””

My father answered.

“The real ones.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

He opened another folder.

Inside was a different agreement.

A real one.

Not the fake contract.

Not the one trying to steal my house.

This one was simple.

Clear.

Legal.

And it proved everything.

Rachel read it carefully.

Then looked up.

“Emily.””

“What?””

Her expression changed.

“This changes everything.””

I stared.

“Why?””

She held up the document.

“Because according to this…”

She paused.

“The house was never the target.””

My heart pounded.

“Then what was?””

Rachel looked at me.

“The inheritance your grandfather left you.””

I froze.

“My grandfather?””

She nodded.

“And someone has been trying to access it for twelve years.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone rang.

A message appeared.

From Diane.

May you like

Only six words.

“You finally found the real reason.””
