Chapter 8: The Promise Before the Wedding

I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.

Nathan.

Standing outside a restaurant.

With Vanessa.

Two weeks before our wedding.

The image wasn’t clear.

But it was clear enough.

They were talking.

Seriously.

Like they were discussing something important.

I zoomed in.

Nothing.

No answers.

Only questions.

I drove home without remembering the journey.

By the time I reached Claire’s house, it was almost midnight.

She opened the door immediately.

“You look worse.””

“I found out my father knew.””

Her face fell.

“What?””

“He knew something about Nathan before the wedding.””

Claire stepped aside.

“Come in.””

I placed the phone on the table.

She looked at the photo.

“Who sent this?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you ask Nathan?””

I shook my head.

“Not yet.””

Because I was afraid.

Not of the answer.

Of hearing another truth I wasn’t ready for.

The next morning, Nathan came to Claire’s house.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

Good.

For once, he should feel the weight of what he had done.

He stood in front of me.

“Emily.””

I held up the phone.

“What was this?””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“You know.””

“No.””

“You recognized it.””

Nathan looked down.

“Where did you get that?””

I laughed.

“Everyone keeps asking me where I get things instead of answering.””

He was silent.

“Two weeks before our wedding.””

I pointed at the photo.

“You and Vanessa.””

Nathan sat down.

“Emily, it’s not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I met Vanessa because she wanted to talk.””

“About?””

“You.””

I stared.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nathan looked away.

And that hurt more than anything.

“Because my family was worried.””

I felt anger rising.

“About what?””

“About us.””

“Why?””

Nathan took a deep breath.

“Because they didn’t think you were the right person for me.””

I laughed.

“So they planned around me.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“I didn’t agree with them.””

“Then why were you there?””

No answer.

I waited.

Finally:

“Because I was scared.””

I froze.

“Scared of what?””

“Losing my family.””

The words hurt.

Because they explained everything.

Nathan had never chosen me.

He had simply hoped he could have both.

A wife who sacrificed.

And a family who controlled.

“What did you promise Vanessa?””

His eyes widened.

“I didn’t promise anything.””

“Then why did she say there was an arrangement?””

Nathan looked confused.

“What arrangement?””

I showed him the message.

His face went pale.

“I didn’t know about that.””

“But you knew something.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

My heart cracked.

“What?””

He whispered:

“My father asked me to convince you to put the house into both our names.””

I stared.

“When?””

“After the wedding.””

“And?””

“I said no.””

“Why?””

Nathan looked at me.

“Because I knew you would never agree.””

The words hit me harder than expected.

Not because he protected me.

Because he knew exactly what they wanted.

And he never told me.

“You watched them try.””

“I was trying to stop it.””

“You were hiding it.””

He had no defense.

Again.

Always too late.

I stood.

“I need the truth.””

Nathan looked up.

“I’m telling you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re telling me pieces.””

I grabbed my coat.

“Where are you going?””

“To find the person who started this.””

Nathan stood.

“Emily.””

I stopped at the door.

“Did my father tell you about the documents before the wedding?””

Nathan went completely still.

That was enough.

I turned around.

“You knew.””

“Emily…”

“You knew my father was involved.””

“I found out later.””

“When?””

“About a year after we got married.””

The room went silent.

A year.

He knew for eleven years.

Eleven years.

And he said nothing.

I looked at the man I married.

“I spent twelve years thinking you were weak.””

Nathan looked hurt.

I continued.

“But you weren’t.””

I opened the door.

“You were just quiet because my pain was convenient.””

As I stepped outside, Nathan said something that stopped me.

“Emily.””

I turned.

His voice was broken.

“There’s one more thing.””

I waited.

Nathan swallowed.

“The house wasn’t the only thing they wanted.””

My heart tightened.

“What else?””

May you like

He looked terrified.

“They wanted custody of the children.””
