Chapter 9: The Child Behind the Hidden Record

For several seconds, nobody understood what Rachel had said.

The words were too heavy.

Too unexpected.

*“There was a second child.””*

Adrian stared at her.

Vanessa looked like all the air had left the room.

Clara felt Emma’s tiny hand wrap around her finger.

The baby was the only person in the room who didn’t know that her entire life had just become the center of a storm.

Adrian was the first to speak.

“What do you mean?””

Rachel looked at the floor.

“I mean the hospital records weren’t changed because of Emma.””

A pause.

“They were changed because of another baby.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Rachel looked at her.

“Yes.””

Adrian turned toward his wife.

“Vanessa?””

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t know.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“I believe you.””

That surprised everyone.

Especially Vanessa.

“Then what happened?””

Rachel opened the folder again.

She removed another document.

“This is the original delivery report.””

Adrian took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Clara watched his expression.

Confusion.

Shock.

Then sadness.

“What does it say?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Rachel did.

“Emma was born at 2:43 a.m.””

She pointed to the document.

“But twenty minutes earlier, another baby was delivered.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“A baby girl.””

Clara felt a chill.

“Twins?””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

Adrian looked up.

“Emma had a twin?””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

“Then who?””

Rachel looked at the document.

“Emma was one baby.””

She paused.

“The other baby belonged to another mother.””

The confusion deepened.

“What does that have to do with my daughter?”” Adrian asked.

Rachel took a breath.

“This is where Evelyn’s plan started.””

She explained slowly.

“The hospital had a serious emergency that night. Two deliveries happened close together. There was confusion. Several records were temporarily combined while staff handled the situation.””

Adrian frowned.

“And Evelyn used that?””

“Yes.””

Clara looked at the papers.

“So the DNA issue…”

Rachel nodded.

“Was not an accident.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I knew it.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked ashamed.

“I always felt something was wrong.””

Adrian stared.

“You knew?””

“Not everything.””

Her voice broke.

“But my mother kept asking questions.””

“What questions?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“About the other baby.””

The room went quiet.

Clara stepped closer.

“What did she say?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“She said some children are born into the wrong lives.””

The words made Clara uncomfortable.

Because they revealed Evelyn’s thinking.

She didn’t see people.

She saw opportunities.

Rachel continued.

“Evelyn discovered the hospital mistake before anyone else.””

Adrian looked at her.

“How?””

“Daniel helped her access the records.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

Again.

Daniel.

The betrayal kept getting deeper.

Rachel continued.

“She found out there had been confusion with the paperwork. Then she created a story.””

“What story?””

“That Emma’s identity could be questioned.””

Adrian looked angry.

“But why?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Because she wanted leverage.””

Everyone understood.

A person who controlled information controlled everyone.

“She wanted Vanessa afraid.””

Rachel looked at Vanessa.

“She wanted you dependent on her.””

Vanessa cried silently.

“And she wanted Adrian afraid.””

Rachel nodded.

“Because a father who doubts his own family becomes easier to manipulate.””

Clara looked at Emma.

“So where is the other child now?””

Rachel hesitated.

That hesitation worried everyone.

Adrian noticed.

“Rachel.””

She looked at him.

“There is something you need to understand.””

“What?””

“The other child was adopted.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“By who?””

Rachel didn’t answer immediately.

And that was the answer.

Adrian’s face changed.

“No.””

Clara felt her heart speed up.

“Who adopted her?””

Rachel looked at the document.

Then at Adrian.

“Someone close to Evelyn.””

A terrible silence followed.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Who?””

Rachel whispered:

“Daniel.””

Nobody spoke.

The revelation was almost too much.

Daniel.

The man who had helped manipulate records.

The man who had helped Evelyn.

The man who had stood beside Emma’s crib.

Had another connection to the secret.

Vanessa sat down.

“No.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

Adrian looked devastated.

“Why?””

Rachel answered quietly.

“Because Evelyn convinced him he was saving the child.””

Clara frowned.

“What child?””

Rachel looked at the floor.

“The second baby.””

Adrian shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if someone convinces you the system failed.””

A pause.

“Daniel believed he was correcting a mistake.””

Clara looked at the documents.

“But he wasn’t.””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

“He was helping Evelyn create one.””

The room fell silent.

Then Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“How much did you know?””

Vanessa looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“Nothing about Daniel.””

“About the records?””

She hesitated.

“A little.””

Adrian looked hurt.

“I need the truth.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I knew my mother was trying to scare me.””

“Why didn’t you stop her?””

“Because I thought she was only trying to protect me.””

Clara understood.

Vanessa had spent years being trained to confuse control with love.

Then Adrian asked the question nobody wanted to ask.

“Where is the other child now?””

Rachel reached into the folder.

She pulled out a photograph.

A little girl.

Maybe around the same age as Emma.

Everyone stared.

Rachel spoke softly.

“She’s been living with Daniel.””

Vanessa looked at the photo.

“What’s her name?””

Rachel looked at Adrian.

“Emily.””

Adrian froze.

Clara noticed.

Because the name sounded familiar.

“Emily?””

Rachel nodded.

“Daniel changed her name after the adoption.””

Adrian looked confused.

“Why?””

Rachel’s face turned serious.

“Because Evelyn wanted to hide the connection.””

A pause.

“She didn’t want anyone knowing there were two babies involved.””

Clara looked at Emma.

Then at the photograph.

Two children.

Two lives.

Two families changed by one person’s choices.

Then Adrian noticed something else.

A date on the document.

He looked closer.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

“This adoption happened after Emma was born.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Then Daniel knew.””

“Yes.””

“He knew the truth.””

“Yes.””

“And he still helped Evelyn?””

Rachel looked away.

“Yes.””

The anger returned to Adrian’s face.

But before he could speak, his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The screen showed a name.

*Daniel.*

Adrian stared.

After everything.

After the betrayal.

After the secrets.

The person responsible was calling.

Vanessa whispered:

“Don’t answer.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Why?””

Her face changed.

“Because if he knows we found out…”

The phone continued ringing.

Rachel looked worried.

“Adrian.””

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

“Daniel?””

A long pause.

Then a voice.

His brother’s voice.

But it sounded different.

Broken.

“I know you found the records.””

Adrian said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“I know Rachel came back.””

The room went silent.

“How do you know that?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Because Evelyn is coming to your house.””

Everyone froze.

Adrian looked toward the front door.

“When?””

Daniel’s voice became urgent.

“Right now.””

A pause.

“And Adrian…”

The fear in his brother’s voice was unmistakable.

“Do not let her get near Emma.””

The call ended.

At that exact moment…

A car door slammed outside.

Clara looked through the window.

A woman stepped out.

Perfectly dressed.

Calm.

Confident.

Like she had nothing to fear.

Evelyn Collins had arrived.

And she was carrying a legal document in her hand.

May you like

A document that had one word written across the top.

*Custody.*
