Chapter 2: The Footage That Changed Everything

The nursery camera had always been a symbol of safety.

That was what Adrian told himself when he installed it the day Emma came home from the hospital.

He remembered standing on a small ladder, adjusting the angle while Vanessa watched from the doorway with their newborn daughter in her arms.

“Do we really need this?”” Vanessa had asked.

Adrian smiled.

“We probably won’t even look at it most days.””

He had been wrong.

The camera had captured every quiet moment.

Every sleepy morning.

Every late-night feeding.

Every time Clara sat beside Emma’s crib when the baby was sick.

But now, for the first time, Adrian was afraid of what it might reveal.

He pressed the button on the monitor.

The screen flickered.

Everyone in the room went silent.

Emma’s crying had slowed, but she was still holding onto Vanessa’s shirt, sensing the tension around her.

Clara stood near the window with her hands folded tightly together.

She didn’t move.

She didn’t defend herself.

Not because she had nothing to say.

Because she knew the truth didn’t need shouting.

It just needed to be seen.

The camera footage loaded.

The timestamp appeared.

8:12 a.m.

Adrian leaned closer.

“Let’s just watch from the beginning.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“Adrian, I don’t think this is necessary.””

He looked at her.

“Why not?””

Her lips parted.

For a second, she had no answer.

Then she looked down at Emma.

“Because we’re talking about our daughter. Not some crime scene.””

Clara noticed something.

Vanessa wasn’t angry anymore.

She wasn’t accusing.

She was trying to slow everything down.

That made Clara even more certain.

Something was wrong.

Adrian pressed play.

The footage showed the nursery exactly as it had been.

Empty.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

The baby monitor displayed Emma sleeping in her crib.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“See? Nothing.””

Adrian didn’t respond.

He kept watching.

Then the time changed.

8:17 a.m.

The nursery door opened.

Clara walked in carrying a basket of clean baby clothes.

She placed it on the chair.

Then she walked toward Emma.

Everyone watched.

Clara adjusted the baby blanket.

Checked the temperature of the room.

Smiled down at Emma.

It was exactly what she always did.

Nothing suspicious.

Nothing strange.

Adrian’s shoulders relaxed slightly.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“She could have done something before the recording started.””

Clara turned toward her.

“What?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“I’m just saying we don’t know everything.””

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

“Vanessa.””

“What?”” she asked.

“I’m being realistic.””

Clara looked back at the screen.

She refused to let herself get distracted.

The footage continued.

8:23 a.m.

Vanessa entered the nursery.

The entire room changed.

Clara’s eyes narrowed.

Because this was the moment.

The moment she had been waiting for.

On the screen, Vanessa walked toward the crib.

She looked around.

Not like a mother checking on her baby.

Like someone making sure she was alone.

Adrian noticed too.

His expression changed.

Vanessa quickly spoke.

“I was checking on Emma.””

Nobody answered.

The footage continued.

Vanessa leaned over the crib.

Then she looked directly at the camera.

A strange silence filled the room.

Clara looked at Adrian.

He looked confused.

Because Vanessa had never looked at the camera like that before.

She knew it was there.

She knew exactly where it was.

On screen, Vanessa walked away from the crib.

Then she reached into the pocket of her robe.

She pulled out a small bottle.

The same bottle Clara had found.

Adrian’s face went pale.

“What is that?””

No one answered.

The footage showed Vanessa placing the bottle beside the crib.

Then she stepped back.

She stared at it.

For a long moment.

Then she looked toward the door.

And smiled.

Not a happy smile.

A satisfied one.

Clara felt a heavy silence fall over the room.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Wait.””

Nobody moved.

“Adrian, you don’t understand.””

But Adrian was no longer looking at her.

He was watching the screen.

The woman he trusted was standing there.

The mother of his child.

The person he believed would protect Emma more than anyone.

And she was doing something he couldn’t explain.

“Play it again,” Adrian said quietly.

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Why?””

“Because I want to understand.””

The words were calm.

But there was something underneath them.

Disappointment.

Pain.

The footage replayed.

Again.

And again.

Each time, the same truth appeared.

Vanessa had placed the bottle there.

Not Clara.

Not anyone else.

Her.

Finally, Adrian turned off the monitor.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Emma began making small sounds in Vanessa’s arms.

The baby was unaware that the adults around her were watching everything fall apart.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“What was in the bottle?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I already told you. It wasn’t anything dangerous.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Her eyes moved back to him.

“I said it wasn’t dangerous.””

Clara stepped forward.

“Then why did you leave it next to Emma’s crib?””

Vanessa looked at her sharply.

“You need to stop acting like you’re innocent here.””

Clara stared.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“You always do this.””

“Do what?””

“Make yourself look like the only person who cares.””

The accusation shocked Clara.

Because it wasn’t about the bottle anymore.

It was personal.

Vanessa wasn’t trying to explain.

She was trying to attack.

Adrian noticed.

“Vanessa, answer the question.””

She looked at him.

“You’re taking her side?””

The room went quiet.

Adrian frowned.

“This isn’t about sides.””

“It is.””

“No, it’s about Emma.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

Real tears or not, Clara couldn’t tell.

“You think I would hurt my own daughter?””

“No one said that.””

“You’re looking at me like I’m a monster.””

Adrian ran a hand through his hair.

“I’m looking at you like someone who just lied to me.””

That sentence hurt Vanessa.

Clara could see it.

For the first time, Vanessa looked less like someone controlling a situation.

And more like someone who had lost control of it.

But then Vanessa’s expression changed.

She looked at Clara.

And Clara knew.

Whatever happened next was going to involve her.

“You know what’s interesting?”” Vanessa said softly.

Clara felt her stomach tighten.

“What?””

Vanessa walked closer.

“You were the first person to notice the bottle.””

“Yes.””

“And you were the first person who suggested calling Adrian.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Almost like you knew exactly what would happen.””

Clara stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying maybe you wanted this.””

Adrian looked confused.

“Vanessa, stop.””

But Vanessa continued.

“Think about it. Clara has been with Emma every day. She knows the camera system.

She knows the house. She knows how everything works.””

Clara felt a cold wave move through her.

She understood now.

Vanessa had lost the first story.

So she was building a new one.

One where Clara was the person behind everything.

“You’re blaming me because the camera proved I was telling the truth,” Clara whispered.

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“I’m saying we don’t know everything.””

Adrian looked between them.

He looked exhausted.

Conflicted.

And Clara hated that.

Not because she needed him to defend her.

Because she knew what it felt like to be standing beside someone who should believe you.

But didn’t.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The sound echoed through the nursery.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed immediately.

“Who is it?”” Vanessa asked.

Adrian didn’t answer.

He stared at the name.

Then slowly picked up.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through the speaker.

Adrian’s face grew more serious with every second.

“Yes… I’m Emma’s father.””

A pause.

Then his eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“What do you mean you found another report?””

Clara felt her heartbeat increase.

Another report?

Adrian listened silently.

Then he asked one question.

“When did this happen?””

The room became completely still.

Finally, Adrian lowered the phone.

His face had lost all color.

“Someone called the pediatric office yesterday.””

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Clara noticed.

Because Adrian hadn’t looked at her.

He had looked at Vanessa.

“The doctor’s office said someone was asking questions about Emma’s medical records.””

He swallowed.

“And they said the caller used my wife’s name.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“Vanessa…”

She took a step back.

“Adrian, I can explain.””

But before she could say anything else, another sound came from the monitor.

A notification.

The nursery camera had detected movement.

Adrian turned toward the screen.

A new file appeared.

Recorded at 8:05 a.m.

Seven minutes before Vanessa entered the nursery.
