Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in the Deleted Video
Adrian stared at the screen.
The words felt impossible.
*Deleted Footage Recovered.*
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The nursery that had once felt warm and peaceful suddenly felt like a place where every corner held a secret.
Clara watched Adrian’s face carefully.
She had seen him angry before.
She had seen him tired.
She had seen him worried when Emma had a fever or refused to sleep.
But she had never seen him look betrayed.
Not like this.
Vanessa took a small step toward the monitor.
“Adrian, don’t.””
Her voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Adrian turned slowly.
“Don’t what?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
He looked back at the screen.
“Don’t watch the video?””
The silence answered for her.
Clara felt a knot form in her chest.
Because people who had nothing to hide usually wanted the truth.
They didn’t fear it.
Adrian pressed play.
The recovered footage loaded.
The timestamp appeared.
*8:05 a.m.*
Seven minutes before Vanessa entered the nursery.
The room filled with the sound of static.
Then the image appeared.
The nursery was empty.
Emma was sleeping peacefully.
A few seconds passed.
Then the door opened.
But it wasn’t Vanessa.
It was someone else.
Clara leaned closer.
She recognized the person immediately.
“Mrs. Collins?””
Adrian looked at her.
“Who?””
Clara pointed at the screen.
“That’s Vanessa’s mother.””
The woman walking into the nursery was older, with perfectly styled silver hair and a designer handbag hanging from her shoulder.
Evelyn Collins.
Vanessa’s mother.
A woman Clara had met many times.
A woman who always spoke sweetly in public.
A woman who always had a different expression when nobody else was watching.
On the screen, Evelyn walked toward Emma’s crib.
She looked around.
Then she pulled out her phone.
Adrian frowned.
“Why would she come in here alone?””
Nobody answered.
The footage continued.
Evelyn looked at the baby.
Then she looked at the camera.
And Clara noticed something strange.
She didn’t look surprised to see it.
She looked annoyed.
“She knew about the camera,” Clara whispered.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Did your mother know about this?””
Vanessa’s face was pale.
“She probably knew there was one.””
“Probably?””
“Adrian, everyone knew we had cameras.””
Clara looked back at the screen.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What?”” Adrian asked.
Clara pointed.
“Look at her.””
Evelyn was standing directly beneath the camera.
She wasn’t looking around.
She wasn’t searching.
She was staring right at the lens.
“She isn’t just aware of it,” Clara said.
“She knows exactly where it is.””
On screen, Evelyn reached into her handbag.
She removed a small object.
Then she placed it on the table beside the crib.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“What is that?””
The video zoomed slightly.
A tiny memory card.
Clara felt a chill.
“She replaced something.””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
But her voice lacked confidence.
The footage continued.
Evelyn removed the original memory card from the camera.
Then she inserted another one.
A fake one.
A replacement.
The room went completely silent.
Because suddenly, everything made sense.
The missing footage.
The deleted section.
The confusion.
The story Vanessa had tried to create.
Someone had planned this.
And they had planned it before Clara ever walked into the nursery.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know about this?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I swear I didn’t.””
Clara studied her.
For the first time, she wasn’t sure what she was seeing.
Was Vanessa guilty?
Was she scared?
Was she being controlled by someone else?
The footage played on.
Evelyn walked out of the nursery.
Then, thirty seconds later, Vanessa entered.
The exact moment she had placed the bottle beside Emma’s crib.
Adrian turned away from the screen.
He looked exhausted.
“Why?””
The question wasn’t directed at anyone.
Just the room.
“Why would anyone do this?””
No one responded.
Then Vanessa finally spoke.
“I need to tell you something.””
Adrian looked at her.
“What?””
She hugged Emma closer.
“I didn’t want to say anything because I thought you would misunderstand.””
Clara felt uneasy.
Because those words sounded familiar.
People often used them when they wanted forgiveness before admitting something.
Adrian waited.
Vanessa swallowed.
“My mother has been helping me.””
“With what?””
Vanessa looked down.
“With Emma.””
Clara frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“After I went back to work, I was struggling.””
Adrian softened slightly.
“Vanessa…”
“No, let me finish.””
Her voice cracked.
“I felt like I wasn’t doing enough. Like everyone thought Clara was a better mother to Emma than I was.””
The words hung in the air.
Clara felt surprised.
Because underneath all the anger and manipulation, there was something else.
Insecurity.
Vanessa continued.
“My mother told me I needed to take control.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Take control?””
“She said I was letting people replace me.””
Clara looked at Emma.
The baby was still resting peacefully.
Completely unaware of the adults fighting over who deserved to protect her.
“What did your mother tell you to do?”” Adrian asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Adrian stared.
“You don’t know?””
“She didn’t explain everything.””
“Then explain the bottle.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I didn’t put anything dangerous there.””
“That’s not the point.””
“I know.””
Her voice became smaller.
“I know.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Clara asked the question everyone was thinking.
“Why frame me?””
Vanessa looked at her.
And the answer came quietly.
“Because Adrian trusts you.””
Clara froze.
Vanessa continued.
“He trusts you with Emma. He listens to you. He asks your opinion.””
“That’s because I care about his daughter.””
“I know.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“That was the problem.””
Adrian stepped back.
“Vanessa.””
“I was jealous.””
The confession was barely louder than a whisper.
“I hated that Emma reached for you when she was scared.””
Clara didn’t know what to say.
Because she had expected anger.
Denial.
Another lie.
She hadn’t expected the truth.
But then Vanessa added something.
“And my mother knew exactly how to use that.””
Adrian looked toward the monitor.
At the frozen image of Evelyn.
“She planned this?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I think so.””
“Think?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she reached into her pocket.
She pulled out her phone.
“I received this message this morning.””
She unlocked the screen and handed it to Adrian.
He read it.
His expression changed.
Clara couldn’t see the entire message.
Only one sentence.
*“Follow the plan. Once Clara looks suspicious, Adrian will finally see who belongs in Emma’s life.””*
The room went cold.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“You knew?””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“No. I swear. I thought she was just trying to help me.””
Clara looked at the phone.
“Why didn’t you show this earlier?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Vanessa looked at Emma.
“Of losing my family.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
The pain on his face was clear.
But before he could answer, his phone rang again.
Everyone froze.
Another call.
This time, the name on the screen made Vanessa’s face change.
*Evelyn Collins.*
Adrian answered.
“Where are you?””
A calm voice responded.
Even through the phone, Clara could hear the confidence.
The certainty.
Then Evelyn said something that made Adrian’s expression turn serious.
“What do you mean Clara isn’t the only one who knows?””
Clara felt her heart stop.
Adrian looked at her.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at the phone.
“Who else knows what?””
A pause.
The voice on the other end replied.
And whatever Evelyn said next made Adrian slowly lower the phone.
Because the secret wasn’t about the bottle.
It wasn’t about the camera.
May you like
It was about something that happened before Emma was even born.
Something Vanessa had never told him.
