Chapter 6: The Name Hidden on the Document
The paper slipped slightly in Adrian’s hand.
For a man who had always seemed impossible to shake, he looked lost.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Lost.
Clara watched his eyes move across the page again.
Then again.
As if reading the same words could somehow make them change.
But they didn’t.
The signature remained.
The name remained.
The truth remained.
“Who is it?”” Vanessa whispered.
Adrian didn’t answer.
She stepped closer.
“Adrian, who signed it?””
His fingers tightened around the document.
Then he looked up.
And the pain in his eyes told Clara everything before he even spoke.
“Daniel.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa frowned.
“Daniel?””
Adrian looked at her.
“My brother.””
Clara felt a chill.
She knew Daniel.
Everyone did.
Daniel Carter.
Adrian’s older brother.
The person who had stood beside Adrian at his wedding.
The person who had held newborn Emma the day she came home from the hospital.
The person who always joked that Emma was “the little princess of the family.””
The person nobody had ever suspected.
Vanessa stepped back.
“No.””
Adrian looked at the document.
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I wish it was.””
Lily looked down.
“I told you there was someone else involved.””
Clara stared at the paper.
“What exactly did Daniel sign?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Because the answer was already terrifying.
Finally, Adrian spoke.
“This is a request to access hospital records.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Why would he have access?””
Adrian looked at her.
“That’s what I want to know.””
Lily crossed her arms.
“Because he told the hospital he was authorized.””
Clara frowned.
“Authorized by who?””
Lily looked at Vanessa.
“By the baby’s parents.””
The words hit hard.
Adrian looked at his wife.
“Did you authorize him?””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“Did you give him permission?””
“No.””
“Then how?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
Adrian turned away.
For years, Daniel had been the person he trusted most.
They had grown up together.
Survived difficult times together.
Built businesses together.
When Adrian had Emma, Daniel was one of the first people he called.
And now his name was connected to the biggest secret of Adrian’s life.
Clara noticed something.
Something about Vanessa.
She wasn’t defending Daniel.
She wasn’t surprised.
She looked afraid.
“Vanessa,” Clara said softly.
Everyone looked at her.
“You know something.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
But her voice was too fast.
Clara stepped closer.
“You do.””
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
Then at Emma.
Finally, she whispered:
“My mother worked with him.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“You keep saying that.””
“I’m telling the truth.””
Adrian’s voice became sharper.
“Then tell me what you do know.””
Vanessa sat down.
Her strength seemed to disappear.
“Daniel visited my mother several times before Emma was born.””
Adrian stared.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“Vanessa.””
“I swear.””
She looked at him.
“I thought they were talking about family issues.””
“What family issues?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then said:
“Me.””
The room became quiet.
Clara understood.
This wasn’t only about Emma.
It was about control.
About people deciding Vanessa’s life for her.
Lily looked at Adrian.
“Daniel wasn’t helping Vanessa.””
Adrian looked at her.
“He was helping Evelyn.””
“Why?””
Lily took a breath.
“Because Evelyn wanted access to something.””
“What?””
“Emma.””
Adrian frowned.
“She already had access.””
“No.””
Lily shook her head.
“She wanted legal control.””
Clara felt uneasy.
“Why would she want that?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily said:
“Because Evelyn believed Vanessa was unstable.””
Adrian looked shocked.
“She said that?””
“She said Vanessa was too emotional. Too dependent. That she needed someone stronger to make decisions.””
Vanessa looked down.
“She wanted to prove I couldn’t be a good mother.””
Clara felt anger rise.
Not because of a family argument.
Because Emma was being used.
A baby.
A person who couldn’t speak for herself.
Being treated like a prize in someone else’s battle.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Did Daniel believe this?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
“Did he ever say anything?””
A pause.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“He told me something once.””
“What?””
She looked at Adrian.
“He said if anything happened, he would protect Emma.””
Adrian frowned.
“Protect her from what?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t ask.””
The answer disturbed everyone.
Because it meant Vanessa had accepted help without knowing what the plan was.
And now the consequences were standing in front of them.
Clara walked toward the document.
“Can I see it?””
Adrian handed it to her.
She read carefully.
The details were complicated.
But one thing stood out.
A date.
The request was made three weeks before Emma was born.
Clara looked up.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“This was before Emma’s birth.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
“But why would they need this before she was born?””
No one had an answer.
Then Lily spoke.
“Because they weren’t trying to change what happened after Emma was born.””
She looked at the baby.
“They were planning something before she arrived.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Adrian walked toward the window.
Outside, the world continued normally.
Cars passed.
Neighbors walked their dogs.
People went to work.
Nobody knew that inside this house, a family was collapsing.
“What else do you have?”” Adrian asked.
Lily hesitated.
“I have one more thing.””
Vanessa looked up.
“What?””
Lily reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
Adrian stared.
“What is that?””
“The original hospital security footage.””
Everyone froze.
Clara looked at Lily.
“You have that?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Lily looked away.
“Because I knew someone would eventually need proof.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Proof of what?””
Lily held the flash drive tightly.
“Of what really happened the night Emma was born.””
Vanessa stood suddenly.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her reaction was immediate.
Fear.
Real fear.
Adrian noticed.
“What?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. We don’t need to watch that.””
“Why?””
“Because it’s in the past.””
Adrian stared.
“Exactly.””
His voice hardened.
“And someone has spent months using the past to control my family.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I was trying to protect us.””
“By hiding the truth?””
Tears rolled down her face.
“I was scared.””
Adrian looked away.
That answer no longer worked.
Not because it wasn’t true.
But because fear had allowed too many people to make choices for him.
Lily walked toward the computer.
She connected the flash drive.
The screen turned on.
Everyone gathered around.
The file appeared.
*Hospital Security Camera — Delivery Wing — Emma Collins Birth Night*
Clara held her breath.
Adrian clicked the video.
The footage began.
A hospital hallway.
Doctors walking.
Nurses moving quickly.
A normal night.
Until the timestamp appeared.
2:13 a.m.
A woman entered the hallway.
Clara immediately recognized her.
Evelyn.
Behind her was another person.
A man.
Adrian leaned closer.
His face changed.
Because he knew him.
Daniel.
The two of them walked toward the maternity wing together.
Vanessa whispered:
“Oh my God.””
The footage continued.
Evelyn looked around.
Then Daniel handed her something.
A folder.
She opened it.
And smiled.
Adrian’s hands clenched.
“What were they doing?””
Nobody answered.
Then the camera angle changed.
The two people disappeared into a room.
A few minutes later, Daniel walked out alone.
And he wasn’t carrying the same folder anymore.
He was carrying a hospital file.
Clara felt her heartbeat increase.
Then the video froze.
A notification appeared.
*File corrupted.*
Adrian stared.
“No.””
Lily looked at the screen.
“That’s why I saved a copy.””
She opened another file.
A backup.
Everyone waited.
The video loaded.
And this time, it started thirty minutes later.
The hallway was empty.
Then someone appeared.
A nurse.
She was holding a newborn file.
She looked frightened.
She looked around.
Then she whispered something to someone off-camera.
The audio was faint.
But clear enough.
Everyone leaned closer.
The nurse said:
“I know what you asked me to do…”
A pause.
“But if anyone finds out that I changed the records…”
The nurse looked directly toward the camera.
And said a name.
A name that made Adrian step backward.
Because it wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Evelyn.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been standing beside Adrian for years.
May you like
The nurse whispered:
“Clara already knows.””
