Chapter 5: The Person Standing Outside the Door

Nobody moved.

The message on Adrian’s phone remained glowing in his hand.

*“You need to know the truth before Clara tells you.””*

The words felt like a warning.

Or a threat.

Maybe both.

Clara stared at the nursery door.

She had noticed it before anyone else.

A small shadow beneath the gap.

Someone standing outside.

Listening.

Adrian followed her gaze.

His expression changed.

“Who’s there?””

Silence.

Then a small sound.

A nervous breath.

Vanessa looked toward the door.

Her face immediately changed.

“No.””

Adrian turned to her.

“What?””

Vanessa stood up quickly, keeping Emma in her arms.

“No, it can’t be.””

Clara walked closer.

“Vanessa?””

But Vanessa didn’t answer.

She already knew.

Adrian reached for the door handle.

Before he could open it, the person on the other side stepped back.

The hallway floor creaked.

Adrian opened the door.

And everyone froze.

A young woman stood there.

She looked around twenty-five years old.

Her hair was messy, like she had rushed there.

Her eyes were red.

Not from anger.

From crying.

She clutched a small envelope against her chest.

For a moment, nobody recognized her.

Then Vanessa whispered one word.

“Lily.””

The woman looked at her.

“Hi, Vanessa.””

Adrian looked confused.

“Who is she?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Clara noticed the fear in her eyes.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Adrian stepped forward.

“I asked who she is.””

Lily looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

Her voice shook.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

The sentence made Adrian’s face tighten.

“Find out what?””

Lily looked down at the envelope.

“I came here because I thought Vanessa would finally tell you.””

Vanessa’s breathing became faster.

“Lily, please.””

The young woman looked hurt.

“You told me you would fix this.””

Clara felt a chill.

Fix what?

Adrian looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Lily took a deep breath.

“My name is Lily Carter.””

She looked at Emma.

“And I was there the night Emma was born.””

The room became silent.

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Lily looked at Vanessa.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“You keep saying that.””

A pause.

“But every time you do, there’s another secret.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Lily was my roommate during pregnancy.””

Lily nodded.

“We were friends.””

“Were?””

Lily looked down.

“Not anymore.””

Adrian waited.

Lily tightened her grip on the envelope.

“When Emma was born, there was a situation at the hospital.””

Clara felt her stomach tighten.

The hospital.

Again.

Lily continued.

“Vanessa was exhausted. She had been awake for almost two days. Her mother was there. The doctors were busy.””

She looked at Adrian.

“And something happened.””

“What?””

Lily opened the envelope.

Inside were several documents.

“I found these three months ago.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Lily, don’t.””

But Adrian took the papers.

His hands were steady.

His face wasn’t.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Clara watched the color slowly disappear from his face.

“What is it?”” she asked quietly.

Adrian didn’t answer.

Lily did.

“The hospital didn’t make the mistake.””

Vanessa looked down.

The words were barely audible.

“No.””

Lily looked at her.

“You switched the records.””

The room stopped.

Even the air felt different.

Adrian looked up.

“What?””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

She turned toward Vanessa.

“But I saw it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“I was protecting myself.””

Adrian stared.

“Protecting yourself from what?””

Vanessa looked at Emma.

Her daughter.

The baby she loved.

The baby who had become the center of everything.

“My mother.””

Lily stepped forward.

“Vanessa, stop using your mother as the answer for everything.””

The words shocked everyone.

Because they weren’t cruel.

They were exhausted.

Like someone who had carried a secret for too long.

Adrian looked at Lily.

“Start from the beginning.””

Lily nodded.

“Before Emma was born, Vanessa found out something.””

“What?””

“She found out Adrian had been keeping something from her.””

Adrian frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Lily looked at him.

“She thought you were going to leave.””

Clara looked at Adrian.

He looked confused.

“I never planned to leave.””

“I know,” Lily said.

“But Vanessa didn’t know that.””

Vanessa whispered.

“You don’t know what it felt like.””

Lily turned toward her.

“I know exactly what it felt like.””

The room went quiet.

Lily continued.

“You were terrified. You thought Adrian was going to choose someone else. You thought everyone would abandon you.””

Vanessa looked away.

“And then your mother gave you an idea.””

Clara felt uneasy.

“What idea?””

Lily looked at the documents.

“The DNA confusion.””

Adrian stared.

“No.””

Lily nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

She opened the folder.

“Vanessa knew the hospital had multiple newborn tests being processed. She knew there was a chance the paperwork would be delayed.””

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“Did you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Clara watched Adrian’s expression break.

Not completely.

But enough.

Because betrayal from strangers hurt.

Betrayal from family destroyed something deeper.

“I thought you said it was an accident,” Adrian whispered.

Vanessa cried.

“The first time, it was.””

Adrian looked confused.

“The first time?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“I changed the records because I was afraid.””

The words came out slowly.

“I thought if something happened between us, I would lose Emma.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You thought I would take my own daughter away from you?””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I thought I would lose everything.””

Lily stepped closer.

“And then her mother found out.””

Vanessa looked down.

“She used it.””

“Exactly.””

Adrian looked at Evelyn’s name on the previous message.

“So this whole thing…”

Lily nodded.

“Started years ago.””

Clara finally understood.

The bottle.

The camera.

The accusations.

They weren’t random.

They were part of something much bigger.

But there was still one question.

“Why now?””

Everyone looked at Clara.

She continued.

“Why would Mrs. Collins suddenly try to expose everything now?””

Lily looked at her.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Lily hesitated.

Then she looked at Adrian.

“Of Emma.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does Emma have to do with this?””

Lily looked at the baby.

“She found out something.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“No.””

Clara noticed.

“You know.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Know what?””

Vanessa held Emma closer.

“She found out about the adoption papers.””

The room went silent.

Clara’s eyes widened.

“Adoption?””

Adrian looked completely lost.

“Vanessa…”

She started crying.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

Lily closed her eyes.

“She wasn’t adopted.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Then why are you saying that?””

“Because Evelyn wanted everyone to believe she was.””

A pause.

“She wanted Adrian to doubt Emma.””

The confusion on Adrian’s face turned into anger.

“Why?””

Lily looked at him.

“Because if Adrian questioned Emma’s records…”

She stopped.

“Then he would question everything.””

Clara felt a cold realization.

This was never about making Vanessa look innocent.

It was never about making Clara look guilty.

It was about destroying trust.

Piece by piece.

Then Lily pulled out one more document.

A single page.

She handed it to Adrian.

“This is why I came here today.””

Adrian took it.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then his hand began to shake.

“What is this?””

Lily looked at Vanessa.

“Your mother wasn’t trying to separate you from Clara.””

She paused.

“She was trying to make Adrian believe Emma was never his daughter.””

Adrian looked up.

But before anyone could speak, Clara noticed something written at the bottom of the document.

A signature.

A name.

A name that made her heart stop.

Because it wasn’t Evelyn’s.

It wasn’t Vanessa’s.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone who had been inside this house before.

Someone Adrian trusted.

And when Adrian saw the name, he whispered:

“No…”

May you like

Because the person who helped create the lie…

was someone he never suspected.
