Chapter 9: The Recording That Could End an Empire

By noon, the story had spread beyond the private conference room.

A guest at the Royal Grand Hotel had uploaded a short video of Victoria slapping Emily in the lobby. The clip showed the newborn's blanket, Emily's shocked expression, and Victoria's hand striking her face.

Within hours, the video had been shared thousands of times.

The comments were merciless.

Who hits a mother holding a newborn?

Someone needs to investigate this family.

If this is how they treat people in public, imagine what happens behind closed doors.

The Whitmore Group's public-relations department issued a statement describing the incident as an unfortunate misunderstanding.

That made things worse.

At the company's Manhattan headquarters, executives began calling emergency meetings. Investors demanded explanations. Reporters gathered outside the building.

And Victoria Whitmore, who had spent decades controlling the story told about her family, found herself unable to control a single headline.

But Emily wasn't watching the news.

She was sitting in Alexander Sterling's private office, reading through her mother's papers while Daniel arranged for Grace to be cared for by a qualified nurse nearby.

The deed lay on the desk.

Beside it was a photograph of Margaret and Thomas standing outside a small house in Boston, their hands intertwined.

Emily traced her mother's face with one finger.

“I wish you'd told me,” she whispered.

Daniel sat across from her.

“Maybe she thought she was protecting you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Emily looked up.

“Victoria protected her son by keeping him from his daughter. Richard protected the company by staying silent. Caroline protected her future by pretending I didn't exist.””

Her voice broke.

“And my mother protected me by leaving me with questions I couldn't answer.””

Daniel had no defense.

He simply reached across the desk.

Emily looked at his hand before taking it.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Alexander entered with Melissa.

“We've located Michael Grant.””

Emily sat straighter.

“Your former driver?””

“His current address was found through an attorney who represented him after he left the Whitmore Group,” Alexander explained.

“He lives outside Stamford, Connecticut. He has agreed to meet us, but only if we arrange secure transportation.””

“Why is he afraid?”” Daniel asked.

Melissa checked her notes.

“He says he has received threatening messages since contacting Ellen Price.””

Emily's stomach tightened.

“From Victoria?””

“We don't know yet. The messages came from unregistered numbers.””

Alexander placed a folder on the desk.

“Michael says he kept the original recording on a physical device. He doesn't want to transmit it electronically because he believes the recording could disappear.””

Daniel stood.

“Then we'll go to him.””

Alexander shook his head.

“Not without precautions. If the recording is authentic, it could be important evidence. We should involve independent counsel and make sure it is preserved properly.””

Emily looked at him.

“Can I come?””

Daniel immediately turned toward her.

“Emily, you have Grace to think about.””

“Exactly. My daughter deserves to know why her family has been living under these lies.””

“I don't want you put in danger.””

“Neither do I. But I won't sit in another room while wealthy people decide what I can handle.””

Alexander considered her words.

“She's right, Daniel. We'll arrange secure transportation and take legal counsel with us. Emily can choose whether she wishes to attend.””

Daniel looked at Emily.

After a moment, he nodded.

“Then I'll go with you.””

They left Manhattan shortly after two o'clock.

A black sedan carried Emily, Daniel, and Alexander north while another vehicle followed with security personnel and an attorney.

Grace remained with a trusted nurse at a nearby residence, and Emily checked her phone every few minutes for updates.

She hated leaving her daughter, even for a few hours.

But she needed answers.

Michael Grant lived in a modest house on a quiet street lined with maple trees. The paint on the porch was peeling, and a small American flag hung beside the front door.

He was waiting behind the curtains when they arrived.

When Alexander knocked, the door opened only a few inches.

“Mr. Grant?”” Alexander asked.

The older man studied their faces.

“Which one of you is Emily Parker?””

Emily stepped forward.

“I am.””

Michael's expression changed.

For several seconds, he looked as if he might cry.

“You have your mother's eyes.””

Emily's throat tightened.

“You knew my mother?””

“I drove her to the Whitmore offices twice. She was a good woman.””

“Do you know what happened to my father?””

Michael looked over his shoulder.

Then he opened the door wider.

“Come inside.””

The living room was neat but crowded with old books, family photographs, and cardboard boxes. Michael locked the door behind them and drew the curtains.

“I've waited twenty-five years to tell someone what I know,” he said.

“But I was afraid that if I spoke, I'd lose my job, my home, and perhaps my life.””

Alexander's expression hardened.

“Did Victoria threaten you?””

Michael gave a bitter laugh.

“Not directly. She never needed to. She made it clear that people who betrayed the family never worked in this city again.””

Emily sat on the edge of a sofa.

“Please tell me about my father.””

Michael took a seat opposite her.

“Your father discovered that a document related to the Royal Grand property had been altered. Margaret had agreed to a development arrangement, but someone changed the terms to make it appear that she had surrendered more rights than she actually had.””

“Who changed it?”” Daniel asked.

Michael looked at him.

“Your mother.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Michael continued.

“Thomas confronted her. He had copies of the original documents and intended to take them to an independent attorney. He believed the Whitmore Group could lose the property if the fraud was exposed.””

Emily gripped her hands together.

“What happened the night he disappeared?””

Michael stared at the floor.

“Victoria ordered me to drive her to an industrial property near the waterfront. Thomas was already there. He had been told they were going to discuss the agreement privately.””

“Was my father hurt?”” Emily asked.

“I didn't see anyone strike him. But I heard them arguing.””

Michael's voice shook.

“Thomas demanded that Victoria restore the original documents. He told her that Margaret and their daughter deserved the truth.””

Emily pressed her fingers to her lips.

“What did Victoria say?””

Michael looked toward a small cabinet near the wall.

“She told him the company had too much invested to surrender the property. She said that if he went to the authorities, she would make sure everyone believed he had stolen confidential records and attempted to extort the Whitmore family.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“And then?””

“Thomas refused. He said he'd rather lose everything than let his daughter grow up believing he had abandoned her.””

Emily began crying silently.

Michael took a slow breath.

“Victoria ordered me to leave. I drove away, but I heard another vehicle arrive. I never saw Thomas again.””

“Why didn't you go to the police?”” Emily asked.

Michael's face crumpled.

“Because Victoria showed me a document claiming I had stolen money from the company. She said she'd send it to the police if I spoke. I had a wife and two children. I was a coward.””

He lowered his head.

“I'm sorry.””

Emily wiped her tears.

“Do you know if my father was alive when you left?””

Michael looked directly at her.

“Yes.””

The answer hit Emily like a physical blow.

“You saw him alive?””

“Yes. He was standing beside the car when I drove away.””

“Then what happened to him?””

“I don't know.””

Michael rose and walked to the cabinet.

He removed a small metal box, unlocked it, and took out an old digital recorder.

“This is the recording.””

Alexander's attorney leaned forward.

“May we inspect it?””

Michael nodded.

“I've never altered it. I kept the original device because I was afraid a digital copy could be erased.””

The attorney carefully examined the recorder and documented its condition before playing the file.

At first, there was only static.

Then a man's voice filled the room.

Thomas Parker.

Emily recognized him from the few home videos her mother had kept. His voice was deeper than she remembered, but unmistakably the same.

“You can't take the land from Margaret,” Thomas said.

“The agreement doesn't give you that right.””

Victoria's voice followed.

“The Whitmore Group has invested millions. We have employees, lenders, and a future to protect.””

“Then renegotiate the agreement legally.””

“And allow Margaret to dictate the terms?””

“She owns the property.””

“Not for long.””

A chair scraped across the recording.

Thomas spoke again.

“If you file that altered document, I'll take the original to the authorities.””

Victoria's response was chilling.

“Then you'll destroy everything.””

“No. I'll expose what you've done.””

There was a pause.

Then Victoria said, “You think anyone will believe you over me?””

“They'll believe the documents.””

“Documents can be replaced.””

“Not the originals.””

Victoria's voice dropped.

“Perhaps you should have thought about that before you became a problem.””

A muffled sound followed.

Then Thomas spoke, more urgently.

“Victoria, what have you done?””

The recording ended abruptly.

Emily sat frozen.

Daniel stared at the device.

“Is that everything?””

Michael nodded.

“That's all I captured. I started recording because I suspected something was wrong. I never imagined I'd hear her threaten him.””

Alexander's attorney made a note.

“The recording may be significant, but we'll need to verify its authenticity and establish the surrounding circumstances before drawing legal conclusions.””

Emily looked at Michael.

“Did you ever see my father again?””

Michael shook his head.

“No. But three days later, Victoria told me that Thomas had left the city and would never return. She instructed me to tell anyone who asked that I had driven her home directly.””

“And you did.””

Michael bowed his head.

“Yes.””

Emily stood and walked toward the window.

Twenty-five years.

Her father had not simply vanished from her life. He had been standing alive beside a car, trying to protect her and her mother from a powerful family.

And the man who had helped him disappear had spent the rest of his life carrying that secret.

Daniel approached her.

“Emily…”

She turned.

“I don't know what to feel.””

“You don't have to decide right now.””

“I spent my whole life thinking he didn't want me.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“And I spent eight months believing you didn't want me.””

They looked at each other.

For the first time, the similarity between their losses was impossible to ignore.

Alexander's attorney finished documenting the recording.

“We should secure this device and obtain an independent forensic examination. Mr. Grant, I also recommend that you make a formal statement to investigators.””

Michael nodded.

“I will.””

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen and went pale.

“That's impossible.””

Alexander turned.

“What is it?””

Michael answered but said nothing.

A distorted male voice came through the speaker.

“You were warned to keep your mouth shut.””

Michael's hand began shaking.

The voice continued.

“Give them the recording, and you'll regret it.””

Then the call ended.

Daniel stepped toward him.

“Who was that?””

Michael stared at the phone.

“I don't know.””

Alexander's security officer entered from the adjoining room.

“Sir, we have a problem outside.””

Alexander turned.

“What happened?””

“A vehicle has been parked across the street since we arrived. As soon as the call came through, it pulled away.””

The attorney immediately placed the recorder into a secure case.

“We need to leave and notify the authorities.””

Emily looked at Michael.

“Are you safe here?””

Michael tried to smile.

“I've lived with this fear for twenty-five years. I don't know what safe feels like anymore.””

Alexander arranged for Michael to accompany them to a secure location while his attorney contacted the appropriate authorities.

Before they left, Michael caught Emily's arm gently.

“There is something else I need to tell you.””

Emily turned.

“What?””

Michael's eyes shone.

“Your father left something for you before he disappeared. He gave it to me because he believed Victoria would search his belongings.””

Emily's heart pounded.

“What was it?””

“A small silver key.””

Michael reached into a drawer and removed a faded envelope.

Inside was a key and a note written in Thomas Parker's handwriting.

If Emily ever learns the truth, take her to the old Manhattan storage facility. Unit 317. The rest is hers to discover.

Emily held the note with trembling fingers.

Alexander looked at the key.

“Do you know what's inside?””

Michael shook his head.

“No. I was too frightened to go there.””

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Then we'll go together.””

Emily nodded.

May you like

Because after twenty-five years of unanswered questions, she was finally close to discovering what had happened to her father.

And if the key opened what Thomas had left behind, the final secret of the Whitmore empire might finally come into the light.
