Chapter 5: The DNA Report Hidden in the Safe

Emily couldn't take her eyes off the document.

The hospital logo.

Grace's date of birth.

Daniel Whitmore's name written in a box labeled alleged father.

And beneath it, a handwritten instruction authorizing the results to be sent to Victoria.

“Where did you get this?”” Emily asked.

Caroline's fingers trembled.

“Victoria's private office.””

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“That document is confidential.””

Emily pulled Grace closer.

“It's my daughter's medical information. Why do you have it?””

“I was protecting Daniel from a fraudulent claim.””

Daniel turned toward his mother.

“You ordered a paternity test without telling me?””

Victoria's jaw tightened.

“I needed certainty.””

“Then you could have spoken to me.””

“You were already under enormous pressure. Your relationship with Caroline was becoming serious, and the company was preparing for a major expansion. I wasn't going to let an uncertain pregnancy destroy everything.””

Daniel looked at her with disbelief.

“An uncertain pregnancy? You knew Emily and I were together.””

“And you were careless enough to believe every promise you made to her.””

Emily flinched.

Daniel's voice rose.

“Don't talk about her like that.””

Victoria pointed at the paper.

“The test was necessary. If the child is yours, there is a proper legal process. If she isn't, then we have protected you from a woman seeking access to your wealth.””

Emily's eyes burned.

“I never asked you for money.””

“You appeared at my hotel with a baby.””

“Your son is her father!””

“Prove it.””

The words hung in the room.

Emily looked at Daniel.

He didn't speak immediately.

That silence hurt more than she expected.

Then Daniel stepped toward her.

“Emily, I believe you.””

She searched his face.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

He looked at Grace.

“I should have said it the moment I walked through that door. I was shocked, and I let my fear speak before I thought about what you must have endured.””

His voice broke slightly.

“I'm sorry.””

Emily blinked away tears.

“I don't need you to say you're sorry because everyone is watching.””

“I'm not.””

“Then why did you refuse to hold her?””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Because I was afraid that if I held her, I'd see myself in her face and realize how much I'd lost.””

Emily's expression softened despite herself.

He continued, “I was afraid of believing something that could be taken away from me. But that doesn't excuse what I said.””

Grace made a small sound in her sleep.

Daniel looked at his daughter again.

“May I hold her now?””

Emily hesitated.

For three weeks, she had carried Grace everywhere. She had memorized every tiny movement, every sleepy expression, every sound that meant hunger or discomfort.

Handing her daughter to a man who had been absent for her entire life felt terrifying.

But Grace deserved the chance to know her father.

Emily carefully adjusted the blanket.

“Support her head.””

Daniel nodded.

“I will.””

She placed Grace in his arms.

He held the baby awkwardly at first, his broad hands seeming impossibly large around her tiny body. Then Grace opened her eyes.

Daniel stopped breathing.

She had his dark eyes.

The same tiny crease appeared between her eyebrows when she frowned.

And when she yawned, her mouth formed the same crooked little shape Emily remembered from the first time Daniel had fallen asleep on her couch.

“Oh,” he whispered.

His face crumpled.

“Hello, sweetheart.””

Grace moved one hand against his shirt.

Daniel laughed softly through his tears.

“I'm your dad.””

Emily covered her mouth.

For a moment, the room seemed to soften around them.

Then Victoria destroyed it.

“Put that child down.””

Daniel looked up.

“No.””

“You don't know what you're doing.””

“I know exactly what I'm doing.””

“Daniel, this is a trick. You are allowing emotion to make decisions that will affect the rest of your life.””

He stood straighter, still holding Grace.

“This is my daughter. She is my life.””

Victoria's expression turned vicious.

“And what happens when Emily demands your fortune? What happens when she takes you to court? What happens when every newspaper in the country publishes your private affairs?””

Daniel looked at her steadily.

“Then I'll deal with it.””

“You cannot simply abandon your responsibilities to this family.””

“I am not abandoning my responsibilities. I'm finally understanding what they are.””

Alexander watched him quietly.

Then Melissa placed another document on the table.

“Mr. Sterling, we have a preliminary report from the hospital's records department.””

Victoria turned sharply.

“How did you get that?””

Melissa ignored her.

“The hospital confirmed that a paternity test was requested three days after Grace's birth. However, the request did not come from Daniel, Emily, or an authorized medical representative.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Who signed it?””

Melissa glanced at the page.

“The signature appears to belong to a private physician retained by the Whitmore family.””

Victoria folded her arms.

“Dr. Harris has treated our family for fifteen years.””

“Then he'll have an opportunity to explain why he authorized testing on an infant without the mother's consent,” Alexander replied.

Victoria's nostrils flared.

“You are making accusations without understanding the circumstances.””

“I'm identifying questions that require answers.””

Melissa continued.

“The laboratory received two samples. One was labeled as Daniel Whitmore's. The other was labeled as the newborn's.””

Daniel looked down at Grace.

“And the results?””

Melissa hesitated.

“The original report appears to have been removed from the laboratory's patient portal. However, a billing record confirms that the test was completed.””

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

“Can you recover it?””

“We're trying.””

Victoria turned toward the door.

“I will not stand here while strangers investigate my family.””

Alexander's voice stopped her.

“Sit down.””

She froze.

For decades, people had obeyed Victoria before she needed to repeat herself.

But Alexander was not one of them.

“You don't have authority over me,” she said.

“Then leave. But understand that the financial review will continue, and every relevant record will be preserved.””

Victoria stared at him.

Then she slowly sat.

Daniel handed Grace back to Emily and walked toward his mother.

“Did the test prove she was mine?””

Victoria's face was expressionless.

“I don't remember the exact result.””

“You paid for it.””

“I receive dozens of reports.””

“Did the test prove Grace was mine?””

Victoria looked toward Emily.

“I was advised that the result was inconclusive.””

Emily shook her head.

“That doesn't make sense.””

Daniel turned to Melissa.

“Can a laboratory make that determination from a proper test?””

“An authentic report should explain its conclusion, the samples used, and any limitations. We need the original report before drawing conclusions.””

Daniel nodded.

“Find it.””

Victoria stood abruptly.

“This is absurd. Even if the child is yours, that doesn't mean Emily should become part of the Whitmore family.””

Emily let out a tired breath.

“I never asked to become part of your family.””

Victoria's eyes flashed.

“You wanted to marry my son.””

“Yes. Eight months ago. Before you spent months convincing both of us that we had abandoned each other.””

“You have no idea what I sacrificed to protect Daniel.””

“Then tell us.””

Victoria's lips parted.

For a moment, Emily thought the older woman might finally admit what she had done.

Instead, Victoria looked toward Caroline.

“Get your things. We're leaving.””

Caroline remained seated.

“No.””

Victoria stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Caroline's hands shook, but she lifted her chin.

“You told me you had the DNA results. You told me Daniel wasn't the father.””

Victoria's expression changed.

“I said the results were inconclusive.””

“You told me the laboratory had ruled him out!””

Daniel turned sharply.

“You told Caroline I wasn't Grace's father?””

Victoria said nothing.

Caroline began crying again.

“You promised me I would never have to worry about Emily. You said Daniel would marry me, and that after the wedding, the problem would disappear.””

Emily stared at her.

“A problem?””

Caroline looked away.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like you were planning to erase my daughter from Daniel's life.””

“I was trying to protect my future.””

“And what about Grace's future?””

Caroline had no answer.

Daniel looked at the woman he had planned to marry.

“You let me believe Emily had left me. You let me believe she had lost our baby. And you helped my mother conceal a test that could have answered every question.””

“I thought the results were real.””

“You never asked to see them?””

Caroline lowered her eyes.

“No.””

Daniel's voice was quiet.

“Then you chose not to know.””

She began sobbing.

He turned away.

Alexander checked his watch.

“It's nearly midnight. Emily and Grace need rest, and we need to secure the evidence before anyone has an opportunity to interfere.””

He turned toward Melissa.

“Arrange a room for Emily and the baby. Have a nurse available overnight, and make sure the room is secure.””

Emily opened her mouth.

“I can't afford—”

“You're not paying for this,” Alexander said.

“Consider it a precaution while we establish the facts.””

“I don't want charity.””

“Then consider it an advance on the legal costs I'll recover from whoever caused this situation, if the evidence supports that.””

Emily studied him.

“Why are you helping me so much?””

Alexander's expression softened.

“Because someone should have helped you eight months ago.””

He didn't elaborate.

But before Emily could ask another question, Melissa's tablet chimed.

She read the notification and went completely still.

“Mr. Sterling.””

He turned.

“What is it?””

“The laboratory has located a backup copy of the DNA report.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What does it say?””

Melissa stared at the screen.

“The report confirms a ninety-nine-point-nine-nine-percent probability that Daniel Whitmore is Grace's biological father.””

Emily closed her eyes.

A sob escaped her.

Daniel looked at Grace and pressed his lips to the baby's forehead.

Victoria didn't move.

For the first time, the truth had been established by evidence she couldn't dismiss with a cruel remark.

But Melissa was still reading.

“There's an additional notation attached to the file.””

Alexander frowned.

“What notation?””

Melissa swallowed.

“The laboratory flagged the original submission because the donor identification information had been altered after the samples were received.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Altered by whom?””

Melissa looked up.

“We're checking the audit trail now.””

She turned the tablet around.

The record showed that the original result had been accessed, downloaded, and replaced by a second document.

The name attached to the account was Victoria Whitmore.

Emily felt cold all over.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“You changed the report?””

Victoria's lips trembled.

“I was protecting you.””

“By making me believe my daughter wasn't mine?””

“I thought I was saving your future!””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“You stole eight months from me!””

Victoria rose, her chair scraping violently across the floor.

“And I would do it again if it meant protecting this family!””

Nobody spoke.

Then Alexander's phone rang.

He answered, listened for several seconds, and looked toward Daniel.

“There's a bigger problem.””

Daniel's face was drained of color.

“What now?””

Alexander ended the call.

“The auditor has found an unauthorized transfer from the Whitmore Group's family trust. A substantial amount of money was paid to the laboratory's parent company on the same day the DNA report was altered.””

Victoria's eyes widened.

“That is impossible.””

Alexander's expression was grim.

“The transfer was approved using your executive credentials.””

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Why would you pay a laboratory to change a DNA report?””

Victoria looked at him, then at Emily, then at the tiny baby who had just destroyed her carefully controlled version of reality.

May you like

And finally, she whispered the words that changed everything.

“Because the DNA report wasn't the only thing I had to hide.””
