Chapter 4: The Fiancée’s Terrible Secret

“Daniel, please. You have to let me explain.””
Caroline Ashford stood beside the private suite's closed door, her fingers clenched around the strap of her designer handbag. For the first time since entering the room, her polished smile had disappeared.
Daniel held his phone between them.
“What happened the night Emily gave birth?””
Caroline swallowed.
“I don't know what that message means.””
“Then why are you asking me to let you explain?””
“Because someone is trying to destroy us!””
Daniel stared at her.
“Us?””
She reached for his hand, but he pulled away.
“Daniel, we've been together for months. You know how much pressure our families have been under. Our engagement isn't just about us. There are businesses, employees, and thousands of people depending on our families.””
“My daughter is three weeks old.””
“I understand that.””
“No, Caroline. You don't.””
He pointed toward Emily, who stood near the window holding Grace.
“That woman spent eight months believing I had abandoned her. She gave birth without me. She came here tonight hoping I would look at my own daughter, and instead, she was slapped in front of a hundred people.””
Caroline's eyes flashed.
“I didn't slap her!””
“You stood beside my mother while it happened.””
“I wasn't even in the lobby when she struck Emily!””
“Then why did you defend her afterward?””
Caroline opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
Victoria stepped forward.
“Daniel, this has gone far enough. You are allowing an anonymous message to turn you against the woman you're supposed to marry.””
Alexander Sterling folded his arms.
“Then let's establish whether the message is true.””
Victoria glared at him.
“You have no authority to interrogate my future daughter-in-law.””
“I'm not interrogating anyone. I'm asking questions about possible fraud involving your family's business records.””
“Caroline has nothing to do with the hotel company.””
“Then she should have no difficulty answering a few questions.””
Caroline looked from Alexander to Daniel.
Her expression softened suddenly.
“Daniel, remember when we first met? You told me you wanted a peaceful life. You said you were tired of people using you for your money.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“I also told you I wanted honesty.””
“And I've been honest with you.””
“Then tell me why someone sent me that message.””
Caroline glanced at Emily.
“Because she wants you back.””
Emily stiffened.
“Excuse me?””
Caroline turned toward her.
“You heard me. You show up with a baby, make accusations against Daniel's mother, bring Alexander Sterling into a private family matter, and now an anonymous message appears on Daniel's phone. Do you honestly expect us to believe that's a coincidence?””
Emily looked down at Grace.
“I didn't send that message.””
“You expect us to take your word for it?””
“I expect you to stop blaming me for things I didn't do.””
Caroline let out a bitter laugh.
“That's convenient.””
Emily lifted her eyes.
“You know what's convenient? Having a wealthy family believe everything you say while they call a mother holding her newborn a liar.””
Caroline's cheeks reddened.
“Don't speak to me like that.””
“Then stop treating my daughter like a threat.””
Grace began fussing.
Emily gently rocked her, whispering to calm her.
Daniel watched the scene, his face drawn with shame.
Then Alexander's assistant, Melissa, spoke.
“Mr. Sterling, there's another issue.””
She placed the tablet on the table.
“The anonymous message came from a prepaid number, but the email server associated with the account was accessed through the Whitmore Group's private network. The access occurred at 2:14 a.m. on the night Emily gave birth.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Who had access to that network?””
“Senior executives, certain administrative staff, and authorized family members.””
Victoria's expression hardened.
“Those records contain confidential company information. You cannot simply take them.””
Alexander looked at her.
“Then explain why someone used your company's network to interfere in Daniel's personal life.””
Victoria pressed her lips together.
Caroline suddenly stepped toward the tablet.
“Can I see that?””
Melissa moved it out of reach.
“Please don't touch the device.””
Caroline's eyes narrowed.
“You're treating me like a criminal.””
“I'm treating you like someone whose name appeared in a message that requires verification.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Caroline, where were you the night Grace was born?””
She blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“I was at home.””
“Alone?””
“My assistant was there earlier.””
“What's her name?””
Caroline looked at him incredulously.
“You know her name. It's Sophie.””
“Then we can ask Sophie to confirm it.””
Caroline's mouth tightened.
“Fine. Call her.””
Daniel reached for his phone.
Caroline grabbed his wrist.
“Wait.””
Everyone went still.
Daniel looked down at her hand.
“Let go.””
She released him.
For a moment, her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't mean to make things worse.””
“Then stop making things worse.””
Caroline lowered her voice.
“Your mother asked me to help.””
Victoria's face turned rigid.
“Caroline!””
But Caroline had already begun speaking.
“She told me you were making a terrible mistake with Emily. She said Emily would use the baby to control you and eventually take half of everything you owned.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Is that what you told her?””
Victoria lifted her chin.
“I was protecting your future.””
Caroline continued, her voice trembling.
“Victoria said you needed time to focus on the company. She asked me to help keep Emily away until you were ready to make a decision.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Keep her away how?””
“I didn't know about the fake messages.””
“But you knew Emily was pregnant.””
Caroline hesitated.
Victoria stepped toward her.
“Be careful what you say next.””
Caroline looked at the older woman, and something changed in her expression.
For months, Victoria had treated her like a future member of the family, promising access to the Whitmore empire and a wedding that would dominate the society pages.
Now Victoria was looking at her as if she were disposable.
Caroline drew a shaky breath.
“Yes,” she said.
“I knew Emily was pregnant.””
Emily's arms tightened around Grace.
Daniel's face went pale.
“How?””
Caroline looked at Emily.
“Your hospital appointment was mentioned in a message.””
“I never told you about my appointments,” Emily whispered.
“I didn't say you did.””
“Then who told you?””
Caroline looked away.
Victoria grabbed her arm.
“Enough.””
Caroline pulled free.
“No! You told me everything would be fine. You said Daniel would never find out, and now you're standing here pretending you had nothing to do with it.””
Victoria's voice rose.
“Do not dare blame me for your decisions.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“What decisions?””
Caroline's eyes filled with tears.
“I went to the hospital the night Grace was born.””
Emily stopped breathing.
Daniel stared at Caroline.
“You what?””
“I didn't go inside.””
“Why were you there?””
Caroline shook her head.
“I wanted to see if the baby was real. Victoria said Emily had been lying about the pregnancy.””
Emily's face crumpled.
“I was in the delivery room.””
“I know.””
“You knew I was giving birth?””
Caroline covered her mouth.
Emily took a step forward, then stopped when Grace stirred.
“Did you tell Daniel?””
“No.””
“Did you tell him I was alive and that the baby was alive?””
Caroline's silence answered for her.
Daniel backed away from his fiancée.
“You stood outside the hospital while Emily gave birth to my daughter, then came back here and let me believe everything was normal.””
“I was scared!””
“Of what?””
“Of losing you!””
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“So you decided to help my mother erase my child?””
“I never wanted that!””
“Then what did you want?””
Caroline wiped her cheeks.
“I wanted to marry you. I wanted a life with you. I wanted our families to stop fighting over business and money. Victoria promised me that once we were married, everything would settle down.””
Emily stared at her.
“And what was I supposed to do? Raise Grace alone while you wore my future like a wedding dress?””
Caroline looked away.
“I didn't know what else to do.””
“That's not an excuse.””
“I know.””
For the first time, Caroline seemed to understand that tears would not repair what she had done.
But Victoria was not prepared to surrender.
She moved toward the door.
“This conversation is over. Daniel, you're coming with me.””
He didn't move.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
Victoria stopped.
“You are embarrassing this family.””
Daniel looked at Grace.
“No, Mother. You did that yourself.””
Victoria's face twisted with fury.
“You think you can throw away everything I've built because of a woman you dated for a few months?””
“Emily is not the problem.””
“She is a stranger!””
“She is the mother of my daughter!””
“And Caroline is the woman who will stand beside you when the consequences of your foolishness arrive.””
Daniel looked at Caroline.
“I don't think there's going to be a wedding.””
Caroline gasped.
“Daniel, please.””
“Not tonight. Not while I don't know how much of our relationship was built on lies.””
Victoria slammed her palm against the table.
“If you cancel that wedding, the Ashfords will withdraw their support. Our investors will panic. The company will lose billions.””
Alexander's expression turned cold.
“Then perhaps your family should have considered the consequences before allowing personal ambition to become a business strategy.””
Victoria swung toward him.
“Stay out of this!””
Alexander didn't flinch.
“I have been staying out of this for months. That ends tonight.””
He turned to Melissa.
“Prepare a formal notice preserving every communication related to Emily, Daniel, and the Ashford engagement. Notify our auditors that any transactions connected to this matter require immediate review.””
Victoria's face drained of color.
“You wouldn't dare.””
“I already have.””
Daniel looked at Alexander.
“What exactly are you saying?””
Alexander held his gaze.
“I'm saying that someone may have used your family's resources to manipulate your relationship and conceal the existence of your child. If company funds were involved, we will find out.””
Victoria looked suddenly frightened.
Not because Daniel had rejected Caroline.
Not because Emily had appeared.
But because the investigation was moving beyond family secrets and into the financial machinery she controlled.
She turned toward Caroline.
“You will not say another word.””
Caroline's chin trembled.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“There's something else you need to know.””
Victoria lunged toward her.
“Caroline, don't!””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Tell me.””
Caroline glanced at Emily's baby.
Then she whispered, “The night Grace was born, I didn't just go to the hospital.””
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document.
“I took something with me.””
She placed it on the table.
Emily stared at the hospital logo printed at the top.
It was a document from Grace's birth.
And beside the infant's name, someone had written a note in red ink.
*PATERNITY TEST REQUESTED — RESULTS TO BE DELIVERED DIRECTLY TO VICTORIA WHITMORE.*
Emily's stomach dropped.
Daniel stared at the document.
“Mother, what did you do?””
Victoria said nothing.
Caroline looked at Emily, tears streaming down her face.
“There's a reason Victoria was so certain Daniel would never acknowledge Grace.””
May you like
She swallowed.
“Because she already had the test results.””
