Chapter 2: The Billionaire Who Knew Her Name

Victoria Whitmore recovered first.

Power had taught her that fear was a weakness best hidden behind anger.

She straightened her fuchsia dress, smoothed the front of her jacket, and turned toward the guests who were still staring.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” she announced, forcing a smile, “I apologize for this unfortunate interruption. Security will resolve the situation, and our charity gala will continue as planned.””

Nobody applauded.

A young man near the staircase lowered his champagne glass.

“Mrs. Whitmore, did you actually slap her?””

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

“Excuse me?””

“I saw it happen.””

“Then you saw a woman behaving aggressively and refusing to leave private property.””

“She was holding a baby.””

“And I was protecting my family.””

The young man looked unconvinced.

Several guests began whispering again, but this time the whispers carried a different tone.

Victoria hated it.

She turned toward Emily.

“Give me that phone.””

Emily instinctively stepped back.

“No.””

“Alexander Sterling is a very busy man. You had no right to involve him in a personal dispute.””

“You told me Daniel knew about Grace.””

“He does.””

“Then why won't he speak to me?””

Victoria's jaw tightened.

“Because he has moved on.””

“Let me hear him say that.””

“I will not permit you to disrupt my son's engagement because you cannot accept rejection.””

Emily's eyes shone with tears.

“You keep talking about rejection. I came here because I thought Daniel might not know his daughter existed. Now you're telling me he knows, but you won't let me speak to him. Which is it?””

Victoria stepped closer.

“You're making a serious mistake.””

“No, Mrs. Whitmore. I made a mistake when I believed you would let me talk to him.””

Grace whimpered against Emily's chest.

Emily rocked her gently, but the baby continued crying.

Robert Ellis approached with a folded white towel.

“Here, ma'am. You can use this for your cheek.””

“Thank you,” Emily whispered.

Victoria glared at him.

“You are dismissed from this conversation, Robert.””

“With respect, Mrs. Whitmore, I think I've heard enough.””

Her face reddened.

“You will regret that statement.””

Robert didn't answer.

Instead, he turned to Emily.

“Would you like me to call an ambulance?””

“No. I just want my baby checked and a safe place to sit.””

“I'll arrange both.””

Victoria snapped her fingers toward another employee.

“Don't you dare.””

The receptionist looked trapped between them.

Then a voice came from the hotel entrance.

“Is there a problem here?””

Everyone turned.

A tall man in a dark charcoal suit had entered the lobby, followed by two assistants and a woman carrying a leather portfolio. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his expression was so composed that the tension around him seemed to sharpen rather than diminish.

Alexander Sterling had arrived.

He did not pause to admire the chandeliers, acknowledge the waiting guests, or greet the hotel manager hurrying toward him.

His eyes went straight to Emily.

Then to the red mark on her cheek.

Finally, to the infant in her arms.

He crossed the lobby in long strides.

“Emily.””

She stared at him.

For the first time since entering the hotel, her expression broke completely.

“Mr. Sterling.””

He stopped in front of her.

“Alex,” he corrected gently.

“You don't need to call me that.””

Emily tried to speak, but a sob escaped instead.

Alexander's expression softened.

“May I see your cheek?””

She nodded.

He examined the swelling without touching it, then turned toward Robert.

“Has anyone called a doctor?””

“Not yet, sir. I offered, but Mrs. Whitmore objected.””

Alexander looked at Victoria.

“Is that true?””

Victoria lifted her chin.

“This is a private family matter.””

“An assault in a public lobby is not a private family matter.””

“She came here to extort money from my son.””

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

“Did you witness her asking for money?””

Victoria hesitated.

“She said the baby was Daniel's.””

“That wasn't my question.””

“She was trying to force her way into the family.””

“By asking to speak to the child's father?””

Victoria's cheeks flushed.

“You don't understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

She folded her arms.

“Daniel is engaged to Caroline Ashford. Emily has been told repeatedly to stay away from him. She refuses to accept that their relationship is over.””

Alexander turned toward Emily.

“Is that true?””

Emily shook her head.

“I haven't spoken to Daniel in eight months. I didn't even know he was engaged until tonight.””

Alexander's jaw tightened.

“Eight months?””

“Yes.””

“Who told you he knew about Grace?””

Emily looked at Victoria.

“Mrs. Whitmore said he already knew.””

Alexander slowly turned back.

“Victoria, did Daniel personally tell you that he knew about this child?””

Victoria's mouth opened.

“He told me enough.””

“That's not an answer.””

“Daniel is my son. I know what he wants.””

Alexander stared at her for several seconds.

Then he spoke to his assistant.

“Melissa, call Dr. Bennett. Ask him to meet us in the private medical suite. I want Emily and the baby examined.””

“Of course.””

“And contact our legal team. Preserve every security recording from this lobby. No footage is to be deleted, edited, or transferred without written authorization.””

Victoria's face went rigid.

“You cannot issue orders inside my hotel.””

Alexander looked at her.

“Would you like me to remind you who financed the renovation of this building?””

A hush fell over the lobby.

Victoria had spent years cultivating the illusion that the Whitmore family controlled everything within these walls.

Alexander's reminder had punctured that illusion in one sentence.

“You are an investor,” she said tightly.

“Not the owner.””

“Correct.””

He glanced at his portfolio-carrying assistant.

“And I am also the controlling creditor on the Whitmore Group's outstanding development facility.””

Victoria went pale.

The facility was the financial arrangement that had allowed her family to expand into three new cities. If Alexander called it in, the company could face an immediate liquidity crisis.

“You wouldn't interfere with a business agreement over a personal disagreement,” she whispered.

Alexander didn't blink.

“Watch me investigate before you decide what I will or won't do.””

He turned back to Emily.

“Can you walk?””

“Yes.””

“Good. Let's get you somewhere quiet.””

Victoria moved to block their path.

“Emily is not leaving this lobby with you until she explains why she has been contacting my son.””

Alexander stopped.

“You have thirty seconds to move out of the way.””

“You cannot take her.””

“I am not taking her anywhere against her will. I am offering her medical care and protection after you struck her.””

“This is outrageous!””

“No,” Alexander said.

“What happened to her is outrageous.””

He looked toward Robert.

“Please escort us to the private suite. And make sure nobody interferes.””

Robert nodded.

“Certainly, sir.””

As Emily followed him, Victoria called after her.

“You think you've won something? You think a rich man will save you?””

Emily stopped.

She looked over her shoulder.

“I don't want anyone to save me, Mrs. Whitmore. I wanted Daniel to tell me the truth.””

Victoria laughed sharply.

“Daniel will never choose you.””

Emily's voice was barely above a whisper.

“Then why are you so afraid of letting me speak to him?””

Victoria went silent.

Alexander heard the question.

He also saw the expression that crossed Victoria's face before she regained control.

It was not the look of a woman protecting her son's happiness.

It was the look of someone desperately protecting a secret.

Inside the private suite, Dr. Bennett examined Emily's cheek and checked Grace's breathing, temperature, and general condition. Thankfully, the baby appeared unharmed, though the doctor recommended that Emily monitor her closely and seek further care if anything seemed unusual.

Alexander waited near the window while Melissa arranged for a comfortable room and a fresh bottle of water.

When the doctor finished, he pulled a chair beside Emily's.

“I'm sorry,” he said.

Emily looked up.

“You didn't do anything.””

“I should have asked more questions when you told me Daniel had disappeared.””

She frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Alexander folded his hands.

“Eight months ago, I received a call from a woman claiming to represent you. She said you'd decided to end your relationship with Daniel and wanted no further contact with the Whitmore family.””

Emily stared at him.

“I never called you.””

“I know that now.””

“No. You don't understand. I wrote Daniel dozens of messages.

I went to his apartment. I called every number I had.””

Alexander's expression darkened.

“Did anyone answer?””

“Once. A woman told me Daniel was traveling and that I should stop bothering him.””

“Who was she?””

“I don't know. She hung up.””

Alexander looked toward Melissa.

“Find out who had access to Daniel's phones, emails, and residence during that period.””

Melissa began taking notes.

Emily stared at Alexander, trying to make sense of his words.

“Why would someone pretend to be me?””

“That is what we're going to find out.””

She glanced down at Grace.

“I don't want trouble for anyone. I just want Daniel to see her.””

Alexander was quiet for a moment.

Then he asked, “Emily, do you remember what Daniel said the last time you saw him?””

She closed her eyes.

“He said he had to travel for a family emergency. He promised he'd call me when he arrived.””

“Did he say where he was going?””

“London, I think. He said there was a problem with a hotel acquisition.””

Alexander's expression changed.

“What date was that?””

Emily gave him the date.

He took out his phone and checked a message.

Then he looked up slowly.

“That's impossible.””

“What's impossible?””

“Daniel wasn't in London that week.””

Emily felt a cold sensation creep up her spine.

“Where was he?””

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he called someone.

When the person picked up, he spoke in a firm voice.

“Get me Daniel Whitmore. Immediately.””

A muffled response came through the speaker.

Alexander's eyes hardened.

“I don't care whether he's at the gala, at home, or halfway around the world. Tell him I need him on the phone now.””

He ended the call.

Emily held Grace closer.

“Mr. Sterling, what's happening?””

Alexander looked at her with an expression she had never seen before.

Regret.

“I think someone has been lying to both of you.””

Before Emily could respond, the suite door opened.

Melissa entered carrying a tablet.

“Mr. Sterling, I found something.””

Alexander stood.

“What is it?””

Melissa glanced at Emily, then back at him.

“The hotel records show that Daniel checked into a private suite at the Royal Grand Hotel this afternoon.””

Emily's heart began pounding.

“Today?””

Melissa nodded.

“And there's something else.””

She turned the tablet around.

A photograph showed Daniel stepping out of a private elevator less than two hours earlier.

He was wearing a black suit.

His face was unmistakable.

But Emily barely noticed his clothes.

Standing beside him was Caroline Ashford, her hand resting possessively on his arm.

And behind them, smiling toward the camera, was Victoria Whitmore.

Emily's lips parted.

“Daniel is here?””

Alexander took the tablet.

“Yes.””

“Then why hasn't he come to see his daughter?””

Before anyone could answer, a sharp knock sounded at the door.

Robert entered, his face tense.

“Mr. Sterling, Daniel Whitmore is on his way here.””

Emily rose so quickly that the chair scraped across the floor.

Grace stirred in her arms.

For eight months, Emily had imagined what she would say if she ever saw Daniel again.

She had prepared questions.

Accusations.

Tears.

But now, with the sound of his approaching footsteps in the corridor, she could barely breathe.

May you like

The door handle turned.

And Daniel Whitmore walked into the room.
