Chapter 6: The Money That Bought Eight Months of Silence

Alexander's phone was still in his hand when Victoria spoke.
“Because the DNA report wasn't the only thing I had to hide.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria pressed both palms against the table.
“It means you know nothing about what happened eight months ago.””
Emily held Grace tightly against her chest.
“Then tell us.””
Victoria's eyes moved toward her.
“You have no idea what you're asking.””
“I know I gave birth alone. I know someone lied to Daniel about me. I know you ordered a DNA test without my permission and changed the results.””
Emily's voice trembled, but she didn't look away.
“What else could you possibly have done?””
Victoria's face hardened.
“Everything I did was to protect my family.””
Alexander placed his phone on the table.
“That explanation is no longer sufficient. The financial transfer will be reviewed, and the original records will be preserved. If you have an innocent explanation, this is your opportunity to provide it.””
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You think money is the only thing that matters? You think you can investigate your way through a family crisis and understand what I've endured?””
“No,” Alexander replied.
“But I understand financial misconduct, and the records are becoming increasingly difficult for you to explain.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mother, tell me the truth.””
Victoria looked at him.
For a moment, the anger in her face gave way to exhaustion.
Then she glanced toward Caroline.
“Ask your fiancée what she knows about the money.””
Caroline went pale.
“Don't do this.””
Daniel turned.
“What money?””
Caroline shook her head.
“Victoria, please.””
“What money?”” Daniel repeated.
Alexander motioned for Melissa to open the audit summary.
“The payment was made through a consulting company registered in Delaware. The company received $2.4 million from the Whitmore family trust. Three days later, a portion of the funds was transferred to a private account associated with Caroline's family office.””
Daniel stared at the document.
“Caroline?””
She began shaking her head.
“I didn't know what it was for.””
“You received money from my family's trust?””
“My father manages hundreds of accounts.””
“Did you receive it?””
Caroline looked down.
“Yes.””
Emily's stomach tightened.
Victoria folded her arms.
“Caroline's family agreed to help me resolve a delicate situation. That was all.””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“What situation?””
Victoria didn't answer.
Caroline wiped her eyes.
“Your mother said Emily was going to make a public accusation. She said the pregnancy could damage the engagement and create problems for both families.””
Emily stared at her.
“So you accepted money to help keep me away?””
“No!””
“Then why did your family receive it?””
Caroline looked toward Victoria.
“I was told it was compensation for consulting work. I didn't know the full details.””
Alexander's assistant checked the records.
“The payment description states ‘reputation management and family confidentiality services.’”
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, he looked older.
“Mother, did you pay people to keep Emily away from me?””
Victoria's silence was enough.
Daniel stepped back.
“You paid someone to interfere in my life.””
“I paid professionals to manage a potential crisis.””
“You mean you paid people to lie.””
“I mean I did what was necessary.””
Emily's voice was quiet.
“What did you think would happen to me?””
Victoria turned toward her.
“You would have moved on.””
“Where?””
“You could have returned to your family.””
Emily shook her head.
“My mother died when I was nineteen. My father has been gone since I was a child. I had no family waiting for me.””
For the first time, Victoria seemed uncertain.
Emily continued.
“I worked two jobs while I was pregnant. I took the bus to appointments because I couldn't afford a car. When Grace was born, I sat in that hospital room holding her hand, wondering why her father didn't love her enough to come.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
Emily looked at him.
“And now I know he didn't know. But someone made sure I spent eight months believing I wasn't worth the truth.””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I should have found you.””
“You tried,” Emily whispered.
“That's what makes this hurt so much. We were both searching for each other, and someone kept moving us farther apart.””
Daniel took a shaky breath.
“I won't let that happen again.””
Victoria scoffed.
“You cannot make promises you don't understand. You have responsibilities to this company, Daniel. Thousands of employees rely on the Whitmore family.””
“And none of them asked you to destroy my relationship with Emily.””
“I did what I believed was necessary.””
“Then you should have believed in me enough to let me decide.””
Victoria looked away.
Alexander closed the audit summary.
“The immediate question is where the money went and who authorized the changes. Until we have a complete record, I recommend that the trust suspend further payments to the consulting company.””
Victoria spun toward him.
“You cannot freeze my family trust.””
“I'm not freezing your personal assets. I'm recommending that the trustees review suspicious transactions. The decision belongs to them.””
“You're trying to take control of the company.””
“I'm trying to stop questionable payments from continuing.””
Daniel looked at Alexander.
“Can you find out who changed the report?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Possibly hours. Possibly days. It depends on whether the relevant records still exist.””
Victoria gave a sharp laugh.
“You'll find nothing. Everything was handled privately.””
Alexander looked at her.
“Then why are you so worried about what we might find?””
She said nothing.
Melissa received another notification.
She read it, then looked up.
“Mr. Sterling, there's a message from the laboratory's compliance officer.””
Alexander gestured for her to continue.
“The original DNA report was not actually deleted. It was moved to a restricted archive after an employee reported an irregularity.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Can we see it?””
Melissa nodded.
“The laboratory is preparing a certified copy.””
“What's the irregularity?””
Melissa hesitated.
“The second report wasn't simply edited. It was generated using a different sample reference number.””
Emily frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the report that was circulated afterward may not have been based on Grace's sample at all.””
Daniel stared at the tablet.
“So someone fabricated a result.””
“That's a possibility the laboratory is investigating.””
Victoria gripped the back of her chair.
“This is a ridiculous accusation.””
Alexander turned toward her.
“Then the records will clear your name.””
Victoria's face tightened.
Before she could answer, Daniel's phone rang.
The caller ID displayed his father's name.
Richard Whitmore.
Daniel looked surprised.
His father rarely called during business events, and since retiring from active management, Richard had become increasingly withdrawn from family affairs.
Daniel answered.
“Dad?””
A weary voice came through the speaker.
“Daniel, where are you?””
“At the hotel.””
“Are you alone?””
Daniel looked around the room.
“No.””
“Is Emily there?””
Emily's eyes widened.
Daniel turned toward her.
“Yes.””
Richard fell silent.
Then he said, “Thank God.””
Victoria abruptly stood.
“Richard, what are you doing calling him now?””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You know about this?””
Richard's voice sharpened through the phone.
“Victoria, don't interfere.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel had never heard his father speak to his mother like that.
“Dad, what's going on?””
“I've just learned that the original paternity report has been recovered.””
Daniel stared at the phone.
“How do you know about the report?””
“Because I was the one who discovered the altered record.””
Victoria's face lost all color.
Richard continued.
“Eight months ago, I began noticing unusual payments coming from the family trust. When I asked for an explanation, your mother told me they were related to a confidential acquisition.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“Richard, stop talking.””
He ignored her.
“I investigated. I discovered payments to a consulting firm, then communications suggesting that someone was trying to keep Emily away from you.””
Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.
“You knew?””
“I suspected. I didn't have enough evidence to confront your mother without risking the company.””
Emily felt a fresh wave of disbelief.
Another person had known something was wrong.
Another person had stayed silent.
Richard's voice softened.
“Emily, if you're listening, I owe you an apology.””
Emily swallowed.
“Did you know I was pregnant?””
“I found out several months ago. I was told the child wasn't Daniel's.””
“By whom?””
Richard paused.
“By Victoria.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
His father continued.
“I asked for the DNA report. Your mother showed me a document stating that Daniel had been excluded as the biological father. I believed it was authentic.””
Alexander's expression hardened.
“Mr. Whitmore, did you retain a copy?””
“Yes. I kept it because the circumstances seemed unusual.””
Melissa immediately began taking notes.
Richard continued.
“But last week, I received a call from a former employee at the laboratory. She told me the report I had seen did not match the original.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Dad, where are you now?””
“At home. I have the document here, along with the original payment records.””
“Can you come to the hotel?””
“Yes. But before I do, there's something you need to understand.””
Richard's voice became heavy.
“The money paid to Caroline's family was not the largest transfer. Another payment, worth nearly $8 million, went to an account that has no legitimate connection to the company.””
Alexander straightened.
“Whose account?””
Richard hesitated.
“I traced it to a private holding company. The company is registered under a name I recognize.””
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“Whose name?””
Richard answered.
“Emily Parker.””
Emily stopped breathing.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Emily shook her head.
“No. That's impossible.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Emily?””
“I've never owned a holding company. I don't even know how to create one.””
Richard spoke quickly.
“I believe you. The company was registered using your name and a copy of your identification. Someone created the account without your knowledge.””
Alexander's expression turned grave.
“Do you have evidence linking the transfer to the person who registered it?””
“Yes. The filing records contain a contact email, and the financial institution has confirmed that the account was opened with documents submitted through the Whitmore Group's legal department.””
Victoria gripped the table.
“Richard, you have no idea what you're talking about.””
“I know exactly what I'm talking about.””
“You promised me you would stay out of company affairs.””
“I promised to protect the company. I never promised to protect a crime.””
Victoria's face twisted.
Daniel stared at his mother.
“Why would someone transfer $8 million into a company using Emily's identity?””
Alexander answered before she could.
“To make it appear that Emily received money from the Whitmore family. If the transfer became public, someone could claim she had been paid to stay away from Daniel—or accuse her of fraud.””
Emily's hands began shaking.
“I never received that money.””
“I believe you,” Alexander said.
“But the account is in my name.””
“Then we need to establish who controlled it.””
Daniel looked toward his mother.
“Did you do this?””
Victoria's lips trembled.
“I did what I had to do.””
Daniel recoiled.
“That's not an answer!””
“I was trying to protect the family!””
“By framing Emily for a crime?””
“I never intended for it to go this far!””
The words escaped before Victoria could stop them.
Everyone heard them.
Alexander's expression hardened.
“Then you acknowledge that you were involved.””
Victoria covered her mouth.
For the first time, she looked genuinely trapped.
Daniel stared at her as though he no longer recognized the woman who had raised him.
“Mother, what have you done?””
She looked at him with desperate eyes.
“You don't understand. If the truth comes out, everything will collapse.””
“Then tell us the truth.””
Victoria's breathing became uneven.
She glanced toward the door, as if searching for an escape.
Then Richard spoke again through the phone.
“Daniel, I'm coming to the hotel. And I'm bringing someone with me.””
“Who?””
“The former chief accountant of the Whitmore Group. She resigned eight months ago after refusing to sign off on the payments.””
Alexander looked at Melissa.
“Get her name.””
Richard answered before Melissa could speak.
“Her name is Margaret Collins. And she told me something else.””
Daniel waited.
Richard's voice dropped.
“The $8 million transfer wasn't made to silence Emily.””
Emily's blood ran cold.
“Then what was it for?””
Richard answered.
“It was made to purchase something from her that she never knew she owned.””
The line went silent for a moment.
Then he added:
“A property interest inherited from her mother's estate—an interest worth far more than the money they transferred.””
Emily stared at the phone.
“My mother died when I was nineteen. She left me nothing except a few personal belongings.””
Richard's reply was devastating.
“That's what you've been led to believe, Emily.””
Victoria suddenly lunged toward the phone.
“Richard, don't you dare!””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Get away from me, Mother.””
Victoria stopped as if she had struck an invisible wall.
Richard's voice came through once more.
“Emily, there's a reason your mother disappeared from the Whitmore family's records. She was connected to a property deal that could change everything you know about your past.””
Emily's lips parted.
“What property?””
Richard took a breath.
“The original deed is in a safe deposit box in Manhattan. Your mother's name is on it.””
Then he delivered the revelation that left Emily unable to speak.
“Your mother was not just a woman who died leaving you with nothing. She was the legal owner of the land on which the Royal Grand Hotel was built.””
Victoria's face turned white.
May you like
Because the hotel where she had slapped Emily—the hotel she had proudly called her own—might never have belonged to the Whitmore family at all.
And the woman she had tried to throw out onto the street might have a claim to the very foundation beneath her feet.
