Chapter 9: The Daughter Tyler Never Wanted
I didn't remember leaving the hospital conference room.
I remembered Laura speaking.
I remembered Vanessa crying.
I remembered my mother's hands trembling as she reached for mine.
But everything else was a blur.
One of my daughters had apparently been the subject of a medical authorization arranged before her birth.
I couldn't stop thinking about it.
"What kind of authorization?"" I asked Laura when we reached her office.
She placed her bag on the desk.
"We don't know yet.""
"Vanessa said Tyler arranged it before I delivered.""
"Yes.""
"What could he have authorized?""
Laura looked at me carefully.
"We need the actual document before we draw conclusions.""
I shook my head.
"He changed the hospital records. He forged my signature. He entered the nursery at 2:47 in the morning. How much more do we need?""
Laura didn't argue.
She called Dr. Mitchell.
Within twenty minutes, the hospital agreed to release the archived medical authorization records to our legal team.
While we waited, I sat on the office sofa with Piper sleeping against me.
The baby we'd been calling Poppy lay in her carrier.
I watched her little chest rise and fall.
I still didn't know who she was biologically.
But I knew she was innocent.
And I knew I would protect her.
My phone rang.
My father.
"Emily, where are you?""
"With Laura.""
"Your mother told me what Vanessa said.""
I closed my eyes.
"Yes.""
"Listen, sweetheart. Your mother and I want to help.""
I swallowed.
"Then I need you to tell me something.""
"Anything.""
"Did Grandpa ever mention a medical condition in the family?""
There was a pause.
"What kind of condition?""
"Anything that might affect the inheritance or the children.""
My father sighed.
"Your grandfather had a heart condition. But he never mentioned anything about the grandchildren.""
"Did he have another child?""
Silence.
Then my father said, "Why are you asking?""
I looked at Laura.
She was watching me.
"Because the inheritance documents mention a second trust.""
My father exhaled.
"There was a family dispute years ago.""
"About what?""
"Your grandfather had a son from an earlier relationship.""
I sat upright.
"What?""
"His name was Andrew. He died before you were born.""
I stared at the wall.
"Did he have children?""
My father didn't answer.
"Mom?""
I heard my mother take the phone.
"Emily, yes.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"How many?""
"One that we knew of.""
I closed my eyes.
"Who?""
"Christopher.""
The man in my wedding photograph.
The man holding the baby.
The man connected to Tyler's financial records.
I looked at Laura.
She was already writing the name down.
"Then Christopher was Grandpa's grandson?""
My mother whispered, "Yes.""
I sat back.
"And Tyler knew?""
"I think so.""
I felt tears gather in my eyes.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
"Because your grandfather wanted the matter kept private. There were legal disputes over the inheritance.""
I looked at Piper.
"Does Christopher have children?""
My mother hesitated.
"Yes.""
"How many?""
"One boy.""
I felt a cold shiver.
The baby in the wedding photograph.
The child with the same birthmark as Noah.
I finally understood why Tyler had sent me that picture.
He hadn't been showing me a random family photograph.
He'd been showing me the beginning of a secret.
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
*Ask your father what happened to Andrew's estate.*
I showed Laura.
She frowned.
"Who keeps sending you these messages?""
"I don't know.""
Another message arrived.
*Tyler isn't the only person who wants the twelve million.*
I looked at the screen.
Then my father spoke through the phone.
"Emily, there's something else I need to tell you.""
"What?""
"Your grandfather changed his will shortly before he died.""
"How?""
"He removed Christopher's name.""
"Why?""
"Because he believed Christopher had stolen money from the family business.""
I looked at Laura.
"Was there proof?""
My father sighed.
"Not that I ever saw.""
"Then why did Tyler have access to the trust?""
"Your grandfather's attorney was responsible for administering it. Tyler was helping with some property paperwork.""
I felt sick.
"How?""
"He was married to you. Your grandfather trusted him.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Tyler had been welcomed into my family.
He'd attended birthday dinners.
He'd helped my grandfather repair the garden fence.
He'd sat beside him in the hospital during his final weeks.
And while everyone believed he was being a good grandson-in-law, he was apparently studying the family assets.
Laura took the phone from me.
"Mr. Hayes, I need the name of your grandfather's estate attorney.""
My father gave it to her.
She wrote it down.
Then she asked, "Did your father-in-law ever mention a clause concerning biological descendants?""
My father hesitated.
"Yes.""
"What did it say?""
"He said the money would go to the grandchildren, but only those whose parentage could be verified.""
Laura looked at me.
There it was.
The motive.
Not just the children.
Not just custody.
The entire scheme had been designed around establishing or falsifying biological relationships.
But something still didn't make sense.
"Laura," I said quietly.
She turned.
"Why would Tyler risk everything by switching babies if the trust required DNA verification?""
She considered the question.
Then she answered.
"Because he may have believed he could manipulate the records long enough to secure control of the money.""
My phone rang again.
This time, it was Dr. Mitchell.
"Mrs. Hayes, we've found the medical authorization.""
I stood.
"What does it say?""
"It was submitted electronically two days before your delivery.""
"Who signed it?""
"Tyler Hayes.""
My chest tightened.
"What's the authorization for?""
Dr. Mitchell paused.
"An emergency transfer of one infant to another facility if a specific medical condition was identified.""
I frowned.
"What condition?""
"Congenital cardiac abnormality.""
I felt my blood turn cold.
"Which baby?""
"The form identifies Baby B.""
Poppy.
Or the baby I'd been calling Poppy.
"Was there a diagnosis?""
"No. There was no confirmed diagnosis at the time the form was submitted.""
"Then why was the authorization there?""
"We're still investigating.""
Laura took the phone.
"Was the receiving facility identified?""
"Yes.""
"Which one?""
Dr. Mitchell read the name.
Laura immediately wrote it down.
*St. Catherine's Children's Center.*
I recognized it.
It was a private pediatric facility nearly two hours away.
"Why would Tyler send our baby there?"" I asked.
Dr. Mitchell answered carefully.
"We don't know.""
"Was the transfer ever completed?""
"No.""
I exhaled.
Then she added:
"However, we found a second authorization dated September thirteenth.""
My heart started racing again.
"What's different about it?""
"The receiving facility is the same, but the patient name has been changed.""
"To what?""
Dr. Mitchell hesitated.
"Christopher Cole.""
I stared at Laura.
The room seemed to tilt.
"Christopher?""
"Yes.""
"Was a baby transferred?""
"No. The request was canceled before execution.""
"Who canceled it?""
Dr. Mitchell answered:
"Margaret Ellis.""
I hung up.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then Laura said, "Emily, I think we need to find Christopher.""
Daniel, who had been sitting quietly near the door, suddenly stood.
"I know where he is.""
Everyone turned.
"Where?""
Daniel took out his phone.
"Tyler sent me a message last month. He said Christopher was staying at a property near Fort Lauderdale.""
"Why?""
"He said they were negotiating the estate.""
Laura gathered her papers.
"We need to contact law enforcement before anyone goes there.""
But before she could make another call, my phone rang.
A number I recognized.
Vanessa.
I answered.
"What's wrong?""
Her voice was shaking.
"Emily, he's here.""
"Who?""
"Tyler.""
"Where?""
"At my apartment.""
I stood immediately.
"Call the police.""
"I can't.""
"Why not?""
"Because he has Noah.""
My heart pounded.
"Is the baby safe?""
"I think so. But Tyler found the documents I gave you.""
"Vanessa, listen to me. Do not confront him.""
She started crying.
"He's saying Noah belongs to him. He's saying the hospital records prove it.""
"That's not true.""
"I know.""
Then I heard Tyler's voice in the background.
"Give me the phone.""
Vanessa whispered, "Emily, please.""
The line went silent.
Then Tyler spoke.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
I closed my eyes.
"Where is Vanessa?""
"She's fine.""
"Where is Noah?""
"With me.""
"Put him down.""
Tyler laughed.
"You still don't understand.""
"Understand what?""
"That none of this would have happened if you'd stayed out of my business.""
I gripped the phone.
"You changed our daughters' identities.""
"I corrected a problem.""
"You forged my signature.""
"You signed plenty of things without reading them.""
I felt Laura step closer.
She gestured for me to put the call on speaker.
I did.
Tyler continued.
"Listen, Emily. We can still fix this. You can come home.
We can work out the trust. The girls can stay with you.""
"And Noah?""
"Vanessa can have him.""
I stared at the phone.
"You just told me he's your son.""
Tyler sighed.
"He's useful.""
The words were so cold that even Daniel looked away.
I felt something inside me harden.
"You're talking about a baby.""
"I'm talking about the future.""
"No. You're talking about money.""
Tyler became angry.
"You have no idea what I've sacrificed.""
I looked at Piper.
At the other baby.
At the two tiny lives sleeping through a nightmare they hadn't chosen.
"Tyler, listen carefully. You are never going to use these children again.""
He laughed.
"Then you'd better hope the DNA results are in your favor.""
"What does that mean?""
He lowered his voice.
"Because one of those babies isn't yours, Emily. And when the truth comes out, you'll understand why I had to make the changes.""
The call ended.
Laura immediately contacted the police.
Daniel began pacing.
My mother was crying.
I stood motionless.
Then my phone rang again.
Dr. Mitchell.
"Mrs. Hayes, the preliminary DNA results are ready.""
I gripped the desk.
"Tell me.""
"We've compared your samples with both babies.""
I stopped breathing.
"Are they mine?""
"One of them is.""
My eyes filled with tears.
"Which one?""
"The child currently registered as Piper is your biological daughter.""
I looked down at Piper.
My baby.
My little girl.
Then Dr. Mitchell continued.
"The second infant is not genetically related to you.""
I closed my eyes.
I had known.
Some part of me had already known.
But hearing it still hurt.
"What about Vanessa?""
"We've received her sample.""
"Is the second baby hers?""
There was a pause.
"No.""
I stared at Laura.
"What?""
Dr. Mitchell continued.
"Neither baby matches Vanessa's DNA.""
The room went silent.
"Then whose baby is the child I've been raising?""
Dr. Mitchell took a breath.
"Mrs. Hayes, we've identified a third genetic match in the archived samples.""
"Who?""
"The child's biological mother is Margaret Ellis.""
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
Margaret.
The former nurse.
The notary.
Tyler's former girlfriend.
The woman who had authorized the hospital records.
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at me in disbelief.
Then Dr. Mitchell said one final thing.
"And there's another result.""
My heart stopped.
"The child registered as Piper is not Tyler's biological daughter.""
I couldn't speak.
"According to the DNA analysis, Tyler is not the biological father of either infant.""
I looked at Laura.
Then at the babies.
Then at the photograph of Tyler and Margaret.
The man who had spent months demanding control over children who weren't biologically his.
The man who had risked everything to manipulate their identities.
I whispered, "Then why did he do it?""
Laura looked at the DNA report.
And before she could answer, Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
"Emily," he whispered.
"What?""
"It's Christopher.""
He answered.
A man's voice came through the speaker.
"Daniel, I know what Tyler has done.""
Daniel put the call on speaker.
Christopher continued.
"But there's something you all need to understand.""
I leaned toward the phone.
"What?""
He took a shaky breath.
"Tyler wasn't trying to steal your grandfather's inheritance for himself.""
I frowned.
"Then who was he trying to protect?""
Christopher's answer made the entire room go silent.
"Margaret Ellis is your grandfather's biological daughter.""
He paused.
"And the twelve million dollars was never supposed to belong to you.""
I stared at the DNA report.
Then he delivered the final revelation.
"Emily, Margaret is your aunt. And the baby you've been raising as Poppy is her granddaughter.""
My knees weakened.
Because suddenly, I understood why Tyler had gone to such extraordinary lengths to change the babies' identities.
May you like
He wasn't simply hiding an affair.
He was hiding an entire family.
