Chapter 5: The Mother Who Never Signed Away Her Children
I read the document three times before I understood what I was looking at.
The police officer had printed the first page of Tyler's emergency custody filing from the electronic court record.
My name appeared at the top.
Emily Hayes.
Mother of Piper Hayes and Poppy Hayes.
Beneath it was a statement claiming I had agreed to a temporary guardianship arrangement because I was experiencing financial and emotional difficulties.
I stared at the page.
"I never signed this.""
The officer nodded.
"That's something your attorney will need to address.""
I pointed to the attached document.
"Look at the signature.""
He examined it.
"Is that yours?""
"No.""
Daniel stood behind me.
"It's the same signature Tyler practiced.""
The officer looked at him.
"You have evidence of that?""
Daniel nodded.
"I have photographs of the documents and messages.""
I turned toward him.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?""
He looked ashamed.
"Because I kept hoping he'd stop.""
I placed the papers on the kitchen counter.
"Hope isn't going to protect my daughters.""
My phone rang again.
This time, it was my mother.
I answered immediately.
"Mom?""
"Emily, where are you?""
"At home.""
"I just received a call from someone claiming to represent Tyler's attorney.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did they say?""
"They asked me whether I'd agreed to take custody of the girls.""
I closed my eyes.
"What?""
"They said you were considering giving them up temporarily. Emily, what's happening?""
I gripped the counter.
"Mom, I need you to listen carefully. I never agreed to that. Tyler is trying to take custody of the girls.""
There was a long silence.
Then my mother whispered, "Oh, sweetheart.""
I heard her crying.
"I'll be there in twenty minutes.""
"Mom, bring Dad.""
"We're coming.""
When I ended the call, Daniel was looking at the document.
"Emily, I think there's something you need to know about Noah.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He pulled a chair away from the table.
"Tyler told me Vanessa's baby was his.""
"I already know that.""
"No. I mean he told me something different before the baby was born.""
I waited.
"He said Vanessa was pregnant, but he wasn't sure whether the baby was his. She had been involved with another employee aboard the ship.""
I frowned.
"Who?""
Daniel shook his head.
"He wouldn't tell me.""
"Then why is Tyler listed as the father?""
"Because he wanted to be.""
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel took a breath.
"He told me that if the baby was his, he'd make sure Vanessa never had to worry about money. But if it wasn't, he'd still help her because she'd helped him with the company accounts.""
I leaned against the counter.
"Why would he help her commit fraud?""
"Because he thought he could control her.""
I shook my head.
"That doesn't make any sense.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Tyler has always needed to be the person holding the cards. When he started getting into trouble, he began making promises to everyone. Vanessa wanted security.
Michael wanted certain financial records hidden. Tyler wanted to keep his position.""
"And what did you want?""
Daniel looked down.
"To believe my brother wasn't capable of doing something terrible.""
Before I could answer, someone knocked on the front door.
My mother arrived first.
She rushed past me and immediately took Piper from the stroller.
"Oh, my babies.""
My father followed, carrying two grocery bags.
He looked at the nursery and stopped.
"What happened?""
I handed him the photograph.
He read the words.
His jaw tightened.
"Where is Tyler?""
"Somewhere trying to convince a judge that I'm an unfit mother.""
My father placed the bags on the counter.
"Then we'd better find a lawyer.""
My mother looked at Daniel.
"Who is this?""
"Tyler's brother.""
She gave him a cold stare.
"Then I assume you know exactly what your brother has been doing.""
Daniel nodded.
"I know some of it.""
My mother shook her head.
"Some of it isn't good enough.""
I almost smiled.
Even in the middle of everything, my mother still sounded like my mother.
She'd spent years teaching me that being kind didn't mean allowing people to walk over me.
And now, apparently, I needed that lesson more than ever.
My father called his attorney, a family lawyer named Laura Mitchell.
She agreed to meet us that evening.
Until then, she told us to preserve all evidence, avoid direct confrontation with Tyler, and not sign anything.
At 6:15 p.m., we sat in her office.
Laura was in her early fifties, with short silver hair and a voice that made people listen.
She read the custody filing carefully.
Then she removed her glasses.
"Emily, I need to ask you something.""
"Okay.""
"Did you ever sign a document granting temporary guardianship to anyone?""
"No.""
"Did you ever agree to surrender parental rights?""
"Absolutely not.""
"Did you authorize Tyler to use your signature?""
"No.""
She nodded.
"Good. We have several issues to address, but the immediate priority is protecting your parental rights and establishing the facts.""
She looked at Daniel.
"And you are?""
"Daniel Hayes.""
"Are you prepared to provide a sworn statement about the documents you witnessed?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
Laura turned back to me.
"Do you have the original messages from Tyler?""
"Yes. Everything.""
"Good. Do not delete anything.""
She reviewed the property documents, the photographs from the nursery, and the company financial statements Michael had provided.
Then she stopped at the guardianship application.
Her expression changed.
"Emily, do you recognize this notary?""
I leaned forward.
The document contained a notary seal.
The name was Margaret Ellis.
I shook my head.
"No.""
Laura checked the date.
"September thirteenth.""
I frowned.
"That's the day after the girls were born.""
"Where were you on September thirteenth?""
"At Mercy Bay Hospital.""
"Recovering from delivery?""
"Yes.""
Laura nodded.
"Then we need your hospital records. If you were hospitalized at the time this document was supposedly notarized, that could be extremely important.""
She picked up her phone.
"I'll have my assistant request the relevant records.""
Daniel shifted in his chair.
"There's something else.""
Laura looked at him.
"What?""
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small USB drive.
"I copied this from Tyler's office computer.""
My head snapped toward him.
"You what?""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"I know I shouldn't have accessed it without permission. But I found something that I thought Emily needed to see.""
Laura held out her hand.
"What's on it?""
"An audio recording.""
She looked at him carefully.
"How did you obtain it?""
"Tyler left a voice recorder running during a meeting. I copied the file before he noticed.""
"Who was in the meeting?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Tyler. Vanessa. And Michael Bennett.""
Laura plugged the USB drive into her computer.
The recording began with the sound of a chair scraping across the floor.
Then Tyler's voice.
"We need this completed before I get back.""
Vanessa answered.
"What if Emily refuses?""
"She won't know until it's done.""
Michael spoke next.
"That's not a guarantee.""
Tyler laughed.
"Michael, you've been doing this long enough to know that paperwork is only a problem when someone challenges it.""
I felt sick.
Vanessa's voice returned.
"And the children?""
Tyler sighed.
"I've already told you. Emily keeps them initially.""
"Initially?""
"Once the financial situation is settled, we'll revisit custody.""
Michael interrupted.
"You're taking a risk.""
Tyler answered coldly.
"She's exhausted, she's overwhelmed, and she has no idea what I've been moving through her accounts. By the time she figures it out, everything will already be in place.""
I covered my mouth.
My own husband.
The man who had promised to build a family with me.
He had been discussing our daughters like pieces in a financial negotiation.
The recording continued.
Vanessa asked, "And what about Noah?""
Tyler replied, "Noah comes with me.""
I looked at Laura.
She was writing notes.
Then Michael spoke.
"Tyler, you're assuming Emily won't discover the other account.""
Tyler laughed again.
"She won't. I put her name on the documents. If anyone asks questions, it will look like she authorized the transfers.""
The room went silent.
I stared at the screen.
There it was.
The truth.
He hadn't merely cheated.
He had deliberately placed my name on transactions he knew nothing about.
He'd intended to make me responsible.
Laura paused the recording.
"Emily, this is important evidence. We'll preserve it properly and determine how it can be used.""
Daniel looked at me.
"I'm sorry.""
I couldn't answer.
My mind kept returning to one sentence.
I put her name on the documents.
I had been recovering from childbirth.
I had been feeding two newborns.
I had been sleeping in two-hour stretches.
And he had been building a case to make me look like a criminal.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Tyler.
**I know you've been talking to Daniel. He's lying to you. Meet me tomorrow morning.
Alone. If you care about the girls, you'll come.**
I showed Laura.
She read it and shook her head.
"Don't agree to meet him alone.""
I typed a response.
If you have something to say, speak through the attorneys.
His reply came immediately.
*You don't understand what you're getting yourself into.*
Then another message arrived.
*I can prove Vanessa isn't the only person who has been lying to you.*
I stared at the screen.
Laura leaned forward.
"Emily, what does he mean?""
I didn't know.
But before I could answer, a final message appeared.
This one contained a photograph.
It showed my wedding day.
Tyler stood beside me in his black suit.
His hand rested around my waist.
Behind us stood our wedding guests.
And near the back of the church was a woman I recognized.
My mother.
But beside her stood a younger man holding a baby.
A baby with a small birthmark beneath his left eye.
The same birthmark I had just noticed in the photograph of Noah.
I zoomed in.
Then I looked at the date.
The photograph had been taken five years earlier.
Before Tyler had ever boarded the Ocean Majesty.
Before Vanessa.
Before Piper and Poppy.
I turned toward Daniel.
"Who is that baby?""
Daniel's face went completely white.
He looked at the photograph.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"Emily, I think Noah might not be Tyler's first secret.""
