Chapter 3: The Brother Who Knew Everything

I didn't answer Daniel's message immediately.

I sat in the driver's seat of my SUV with the twins secured in their car seats, staring at the phone.

Outside, PortMiami continued its usual afternoon rhythm.

Families reunited.

Children ran toward grandparents.

Couples embraced.

Somewhere behind me, passengers were probably complaining about delayed luggage.

My husband had just admitted to multiple affairs, and I was receiving mysterious messages about financial fraud.

I wanted to go home.

I wanted to lock every door, put my daughters in their cribs, and pretend the last hour had never happened.

But the message remained on my screen.

*Your husband wasn't the only person who knew about the babies.*

I finally typed:

What do you mean?

Daniel replied almost immediately.

I know about the account. I know about the transfers. And I know what Tyler was planning to do when he got home.

I stared at the screen.

Where are you?

At the marina café across from the terminal. Come alone if you can.

I looked at my daughters.

There was no way I was leaving them.

I typed:

I'm bringing my babies.

His response came a few seconds later.

Of course. I'm sorry, Emily.

I drove to the café.

Daniel was waiting at a table near the window.

He looked nothing like Tyler.

Where my husband was polished and confident, Daniel was quieter. He wore a faded gray shirt, jeans, and the same old watch he'd had since college.

He stood as soon as he saw me.

"Emily.""

"Daniel.""

He looked at the twins.

"Can I help you with the diaper bag?""

I hesitated.

Then I handed it to him.

"Thank you.""

He placed it beside the stroller and pulled out a chair.

"How are you holding up?""

I almost laughed.

"How would you be holding up?""

He lowered his eyes.

"Fair enough.""

A waitress approached.

"Can I get you anything?""

"Just water," I said.

Daniel ordered coffee.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I placed my phone on the table.

"Tell me what you know.""

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

"First, I need you to understand something. I didn't know about Vanessa until recently.""

"But you knew about the money.""

He looked at me.

"Yes.""

My chest tightened.

"How long?""

"About six weeks.""

"And you didn't tell me?""

"No.""

"Why?""

He looked toward the window.

"Because Tyler told me it was temporary. He said he was moving money between accounts for a business investment.""

I stared at him.

"Money that ended up in my name?""

Daniel nodded.

"He told me you were aware.""

"I wasn't.""

"I know that now.""

I leaned forward.

"Why did you wait until today?""

He took a breath.

"Because yesterday, Tyler called me from the ship.""

"What did he say?""

"He wanted me to help him prepare the house.""

I frowned.

"What house?""

"Your house.""

The waitress returned with my water.

I took a sip, though my mouth was completely dry.

Daniel continued.

"Tyler said he wanted to surprise you. He told me he'd be bringing someone home.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

I stared at him.

"He wanted to bring her into our house?""

Daniel nodded.

"He said things were going to be different now. He said you'd have to accept that he had moved on.""

I looked down at my hands.

My fingers were trembling.

"Did he say anything about the girls?""

Daniel's expression changed.

"He said he wasn't ready to be a full-time father.""

The sentence hurt more than I expected.

Even though I'd already heard Tyler say he'd rather go to dinner.

Even though I'd watched him walk away.

Hearing his own brother repeat it made everything feel final.

Daniel leaned closer.

"Emily, there's more.""

I looked up.

"Of course there is.""

He took an envelope from his jacket.

It was thick, with several pages inside.

"I found this in Tyler's home office last week.""

I recognized the handwriting on the front.

Tyler's.

The envelope was labeled:

*PROPERTY TRANSFER — FINAL DOCUMENTS.*

I opened it.

The first page contained our home address.

The second listed the mortgage balance.

The third showed a proposed transfer of ownership.

I read the name at the bottom.

Vanessa Reed.

I looked at Daniel.

"He was giving her our house?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not exactly.""

"What does that mean?""

"He was planning to sell it.""

"Why would he need my signature?""

Daniel pulled out another sheet.

"Because both your names are on the deed.""

I stared at the paperwork.

Tyler and I had purchased the house two years before our wedding. We'd spent weekends painting the walls, choosing kitchen cabinets, and planting flowers in the backyard.

The nursery had been his idea.

He'd painted the walls pale yellow himself.

He'd spent an entire Saturday assembling two white cribs, complaining about the instructions and insisting he didn't need help.

Now he was trying to sell the house without telling me.

"Did he forge my signature?"" I asked.

Daniel didn't answer.

I looked closer at the document.

There it was.

A signature that resembled mine.

Almost perfectly.

Except for one detail.

I always crossed the letter E in my first name with a tiny upward stroke.

The signature on the document didn't.

"That's not my signature.""

Daniel nodded.

"I know.""

I looked at him.

"How?""

"Because I watched him practice it.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

Daniel looked ashamed.

"About a month ago, I went to his office. He was sitting at his desk with a stack of papers. He had copied your signature onto a blank sheet.""

I couldn't breathe properly.

"You watched him do that?""

"I asked what he was doing. He said it was for a refinance application.""

"And you believed him?""

"No. I didn't.""

"Then why didn't you stop him?""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Because I was afraid.""

I stared at him.

"Of Tyler?""

"Of what he'd done already.""

I waited.

Daniel finally continued.

"Tyler borrowed money from me last year. A lot of it. He said he was investing in a hospitality business. When I found out the money was connected to the cruise company's accounts, I realized he might be in serious trouble.""

"How much?""

"Thirty thousand dollars.""

I sat back.

Thirty thousand.

Eighty-six thousand.

A forged property transfer.

A woman with a secret baby.

My husband had apparently been living several different lives while I was buying diapers and counting pediatric appointments.

"Why did you help him?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because he's my brother.""

His voice broke slightly.

"And because I thought I could fix it before anyone got hurt.""

I glanced at Piper.

She was awake now, staring at the café ceiling with wide blue eyes.

I reached over and touched her tiny hand.

"Someone already got hurt, Daniel.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

My phone rang.

Tyler.

I let it ring twice before answering.

"What?""

"Emily, where are you?""

"Why?""

"I need you to come home.""

"I'm not coming home to you.""

"Don't start this again.""

I closed my eyes.

"Tyler, what do you want?""

He exhaled.

"Michael has suspended me. Rebecca is making accusations. Vanessa is losing her mind. I need you to tell them the money was for our family.""

I stared at the table.

"Was it?""

Silence.

"Emily, listen to me. The money was transferred temporarily.""

"Into my name.""

"Yes.""

"Without my knowledge.""

"I was going to explain.""

"When?""

"When I got home.""

"You weren't even going to come home alone.""

He sighed.

"Can we stop talking about Vanessa?""

I almost couldn't believe him.

"You're asking me to stop talking about the woman you brought home from the ship?""

"She's not important.""

Daniel looked at me.

He could hear Tyler through the phone.

I asked quietly, "Then why is she listed on our property transfer?""

There was a pause.

A long one.

Then Tyler said, "Who told you that?""

I looked at Daniel.

"My lawyer will be in touch.""

"Emily, don't do anything stupid.""

I hung up.

My hands were shaking.

Daniel looked at me.

"He's going to panic now.""

"Good.""

But Daniel didn't smile.

He opened his jacket and removed another envelope.

"This is why I really needed to see you.""

I stared at it.

"What now?""

He slid it across the table.

Inside was a printed email.

The sender was Tyler.

The recipient was someone whose name I didn't recognize.

The subject line read:

*FINAL FAMILY ARRANGEMENT.*

I began reading.

The email was dated three weeks earlier.

Tyler had written that he intended to transfer the house, settle the outstanding financial obligations, and establish a separate residence.

But one paragraph stood out.

Emily has no idea what I've arranged. Once the paperwork is complete, she won't have the resources to challenge anything. The twins will remain with her initially, but I'll have the right to determine their residence once the financial settlement is finalized.

I read it again.

Then a third time.

"He's planning to take my daughters?""

Daniel shook his head.

"That's what it looks like.""

I pressed my palm against the table.

"Who did he send this to?""

Daniel pointed to the recipient's name.

*Rebecca Collins.*

I looked up.

"Rebecca?""

"Yes.""

"But she works for the cruise company.""

Daniel nodded.

"There's another reason Tyler was so desperate to get home.""

I stared at him.

"What reason?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said something I never expected.

"Emily, Tyler wasn't just having an affair with Vanessa. He was using the cruise company to move money, and he needed someone inside the company to help him cover it up.""

"Rebecca?""

"No.""

He pointed to the email again.

"Look at the sender's address carefully.""

I did.

It wasn't Tyler's company account.

It was a private address.

And the account belonged to someone named *Michael Bennett*.

I looked at Daniel.

"Michael sent this?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Tyler forwarded it to me by mistake. The original email came from Michael.""

My heart began pounding.

"Why would Michael be helping him?""

Daniel leaned closer.

"Because Michael isn't just investigating your husband, Emily.""

He paused.

"He's the person who introduced Tyler to Vanessa in the first place.""

Before I could respond, my phone vibrated again.

A new message appeared.

This time, it was from Michael.

*Emily, do not trust Daniel. He has not told you the whole truth.*

And beneath it was a photograph.

A photograph taken inside my own house.

The nursery.

Two empty cribs.

May you like

And on the wall between them, someone had written three words in black marker:

*THEY ARE MINE NOW.*
