Chapter 8: The DNA That Changed Everything
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my heart.
Tyler had been at the hospital.
Not on a video call.
Not watching from the cruise ship.
He had physically been there.
At 2:47 in the morning, while I was recovering from surgery and trying to hold my newborn daughters, my husband had apparently walked into the hospital nursery and authorized the replacement of two identification bands.
"Are you certain?"" I asked.
Dr. Mitchell answered carefully.
"His name appears in the access authorization log. We're checking the corresponding security records.""
"Why was he allowed into the nursery?""
"His visitor credentials had been approved.""
"By whom?""
Another pause.
"Margaret Ellis.""
I closed my eyes.
The same woman who had notarized the false guardianship document.
The same woman photographed beside Vanessa.
"Doctor, I want DNA testing.""
"We can arrange that.""
"Both babies. Me, both babies, and Vanessa's baby.""
"That's possible, although the other child's legal guardian will need to cooperate or a court order may be necessary.""
"Then I'll get a court order.""
Laura took the phone.
"We'll coordinate the legal request directly. Please preserve the original records and do not release any documents to Tyler or another family member without our authorization.""
After the call ended, Laura looked at me.
"We need to act quickly.""
She called the hospital's legal department and requested an emergency meeting.
Then she contacted the court clerk regarding the pending custody application.
Within an hour, we had a temporary order preventing either child from being removed from my care while the identity investigation proceeded.
It wasn't everything I wanted.
But it was something.
That evening, we returned to the hospital.
I carried Piper.
My mother pushed the stroller containing the baby I'd been calling Poppy.
Daniel followed us.
Laura met us outside the maternity ward.
A hospital administrator named Robert Greene was waiting.
"Mrs. Hayes," he said, "I want to apologize for what you're experiencing.""
I stared at him.
"An apology isn't going to tell me which baby I brought home.""
He nodded.
"I understand.""
He led us into a private consultation room.
Dr. Mitchell was already there, along with a laboratory technician.
She explained the testing process.
Samples would be collected from me and both babies. Vanessa's participation would be requested through her attorney, and the hospital would preserve the original specimens and records.
I signed the consent forms.
Then the technician approached Piper.
I watched as she gently collected a cheek swab.
Piper cried.
I kissed her tiny forehead.
"It's okay, sweetheart.""
The same procedure was repeated with the baby in the stroller.
My mother stood beside me.
"Emily, do you want me to hold her?""
I shook my head.
"I've got her.""
The technician placed the samples into separate sealed containers.
I watched every movement.
Every label.
Every signature.
I wasn't taking anyone's word for anything anymore.
When the procedure was finished, Dr. Mitchell sat across from me.
"We've also reviewed the preliminary security footage.""
I leaned forward.
"What did you find?""
She opened her laptop.
The footage showed a hospital corridor.
The timestamp read 2:43 a.m.
Tyler appeared first.
He was wearing a gray shirt and dark trousers.
He looked toward the nurses' station.
Then Margaret Ellis approached him.
They exchanged a few words.
Tyler handed her a folded document.
Margaret looked at it.
Then she opened the nursery door.
My stomach tightened.
The video continued.
At 2:47 a.m., Tyler entered the nursery.
He remained inside for approximately six minutes.
When he came out, he was carrying a small plastic envelope.
Margaret followed him.
Then the footage ended.
I stared at the screen.
"Can you tell which babies were inside?""
Dr. Mitchell shook her head.
"The camera doesn't show the nursery beds.""
"Then how do you know what happened?""
"We don't yet.""
I looked at Laura.
She was studying the footage.
"Can we obtain the original access logs?""
"Yes," Dr. Mitchell replied.
"Every entry and exit?""
"Yes.""
"Good. We'll need those.""
The hospital administrator shifted uncomfortably.
"There is another matter.""
I turned toward him.
"What?""
"Margaret Ellis resigned three weeks ago.""
"Where is she?""
"We don't know.""
Daniel looked up.
"Vanessa knows.""
Everyone turned toward him.
He swallowed.
"She mentioned Margaret during a conversation with Tyler.""
I stared at him.
"Why didn't you say that earlier?""
"Because I didn't know she was connected to this.""
Laura stood.
"Do you remember where Margaret was living?""
Daniel shook his head.
"No. But Tyler paid her.""
My stomach tightened.
"How much?""
"Five thousand dollars every month for six months.""
The hospital administrator looked horrified.
"Do you have evidence?""
Daniel nodded.
"Bank transfer records.""
Laura took out her notebook.
"Send everything to me.""
We left the hospital shortly before midnight.
My mother drove us home.
I sat in the back seat between the two car seats, one hand resting on each baby.
Neither child knew what was happening.
Piper slept.
The other baby made a soft little noise and turned her head toward my hand.
I brushed her cheek.
Whatever the DNA test revealed, I couldn't imagine abandoning her.
She had done nothing wrong.
She was a baby.
A tiny person who deserved love, safety, and a name that belonged to her.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
*I know you're doing DNA testing. We need to talk before the results come back.*
I stared at it.
Then another message appeared.
*You deserve to know why Tyler chose your daughters.*
I typed:
What does that mean?
She replied:
*Meet me tomorrow at the hospital. No lawyers. No Daniel. Just you and me.*
I showed Laura.
She shook her head.
"We won't meet her alone.""
I typed:
My attorney will arrange the meeting.
Vanessa didn't respond.
The next morning, Laura and I met her in a hospital conference room.
Vanessa arrived wearing sunglasses and carrying a large handbag.
She looked exhausted.
There was no designer confidence left in her face.
She sat opposite me.
"Where are the babies?""
"Safe.""
"Both?""
I looked at her.
"Yes.""
She lowered her sunglasses.
"Good.""
I folded my hands.
"Tell me the truth.""
She looked toward Laura.
"Can we talk privately?""
"No," Laura answered.
"You can speak here.""
Vanessa sighed.
Then she looked at me.
"Tyler told me he was going to fix everything.""
"By switching our babies?""
She flinched.
"I didn't know about that until afterward.""
"Afterward?""
She nodded.
"He told me one of the identification bands had been replaced. He said the hospital had made an administrative mistake.""
I stared at her.
"Did you know my mother signed a declaration?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know it was false?""
Vanessa looked down.
"I suspected.""
I felt my hands tightening.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Tyler threatened me.""
"With what?""
She opened her handbag and removed a photograph.
It showed a young woman standing beside Tyler.
The woman looked familiar.
Then I recognized her.
Margaret Ellis.
Vanessa placed the photograph on the table.
"Margaret was his girlfriend before he married you.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"They had a relationship years ago. She worked at Mercy Bay. Tyler knew she could access the hospital records.""
Laura leaned forward.
"Are you saying Tyler arranged the identification changes through Margaret?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Why?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said, "Because your grandfather's trust wasn't just four million dollars.""
Laura frowned.
"What do you mean?""
Vanessa took another document from her bag.
It was a copy of an old estate agreement.
"There's a second trust.""
I stared at the paper.
At the top was my grandfather's name.
Beneath it was a clause identifying a separate inheritance.
My hands went cold.
"How much?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Almost twelve million.""
Silence.
Laura picked up the document.
"Where did you obtain this?""
"From Tyler's office.""
"Why are you giving it to Emily?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Because I thought I was going to become his wife.""
I felt sick.
"You're giving me evidence because he didn't marry you?""
She shook her head.
"No. I'm giving it to you because I found out what he planned to do to Noah.""
Her voice cracked.
"He told me Noah would be protected. He told me he would provide for him. But last week I found documents showing he intended to use the baby as part of the trust arrangement.""
I stared at her.
"How?""
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
"He planned to register Noah as a Hayes heir, even if he wasn't biologically related to your family.""
Laura immediately examined the document.
"That would be fraud.""
Vanessa nodded.
"That's why I left the ship with him. I thought he loved me. I thought we were building a family.""
She looked directly at me.
"Then I found the hospital photographs.""
I swallowed.
"What photographs?""
She took out her phone.
There was an image of a newborn baby wearing a hospital identification bracelet.
The name on the bracelet was partly visible.
*EMILY HAYES — BABY B.*
I looked up.
"That's Poppy.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
She zoomed in.
A second label appeared beneath the first.
*TRANSFERRED FROM MATERNAL ROOM 6.*
I recognized the room number.
My delivery room.
Vanessa whispered:
"Tyler told me that the baby you took home was originally mine.""
I stared at her.
"And where was my baby?""
Vanessa looked away.
"That's what I've been trying to tell you.""
Laura leaned forward.
"Where is the biological child of Emily Hayes?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
She opened another photograph.
This one showed a baby sleeping in a white crib.
There was a small hospital identification card beside the mattress.
The name read:
*NOAH REED.*
But beneath the name, someone had written another line.
*BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: EMILY HAYES.*
I stopped breathing.
Vanessa looked at me.
"Emily, I think the baby I brought home was yours.""
My eyes filled with tears.
"Then who is the baby I brought home?""
She swallowed.
"Mine.""
For a moment, I couldn't move.
Then I whispered, "You knew?""
"Not at first.""
"When?""
"Three weeks ago.""
I stared at her.
"And you said nothing?""
She began crying.
"Because Tyler told me if I exposed him, he'd make sure I lost Noah forever.""
Laura stood.
"We need the original DNA results and an immediate protective order.""
Vanessa nodded.
"I'll cooperate.""
I looked at her.
"Why should I believe you?""
She wiped her face.
"Because there's something else you need to know.""
"What?""
She leaned closer.
"Tyler didn't switch the babies because of the inheritance.""
I frowned.
"Then why?""
Vanessa looked toward the conference room door.
Then she whispered:
"Because one of the twins was never supposed to survive.""
My blood turned cold.
"What?""
She looked directly into my eyes.
"Emily, the hospital records show that Tyler had already arranged a separate medical authorization before you gave birth.""
Laura's face hardened.
"Who authorized it?""
May you like
Vanessa answered.
"Your husband.""
