Chapter 9: The Truth I Was Forced to Forget
The old phone kept ringing.
Vanessa Carter.
Her name glowed on the cracked screen.
Nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Lucas.
Not Daniel.
The sound echoed through Lily’s old bedroom like a warning from the past.
Lucas looked at me.
“Don’t answer.””
I wanted to listen.
Every instinct told me not to touch that phone.
But another part of me knew something.
Vanessa was calling because she knew.
She knew we found it.
She knew the truth was no longer buried.
And she was afraid.
I picked up.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was silence.
Then Vanessa’s voice.
“Maria.””
My grip tightened.
“How are you calling this phone?””
She ignored the question.
“Where are you?””
I looked at Daniel.
He was watching me carefully.
Not angry.
Calculating.
“I found Lily’s phone.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“You weren’t supposed to remember.””
The words hit me harder than a confession.
Not supposed to remember.
Not deny.
Not accuse.
Remember.
“What did you do to me?””
Nobody spoke.
Even Daniel looked surprised.
Vanessa’s breathing changed.
“You need to leave that house.””
“Answer me.””
“Maria, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“For three years, I thought I was forgetting because I was traumatized.””
I looked at the phone.
“But you made me forget.””
A long pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“I protected you.””
I almost laughed.
Protected me.
That was the kind of lie people told when they wanted to make cruelty sound like kindness.
“You threatened me.””
“I saved your life.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked away.
And that scared me.
Because his reaction told me something.
Vanessa wasn’t completely lying.
“What happened that night?””
Vanessa’s voice lowered.
“Come alone.””
“No.””
“Maria.””
“I’m done following your rules.””
A pause.
Then she said something I never expected.
“Your memories are incomplete.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you don’t know what really happened after Lily fell.””
I looked at Daniel.
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
He knew.
“You were there,” Vanessa continued.
“You saw everything.””
I closed my eyes.
“I saw Lily.””
“Yes.””
“I saw the phone.””
“Yes.””
“I heard you and Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Then why don’t I remember the rest?””
Silence.
Then Vanessa answered:
“Because you begged me to erase it.””
My heart stopped.
The phone nearly slipped from my hand.
“No.””
Lucas looked at me.
“What did she say?””
I ignored him.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
“Why would I ask you to do that?””
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
“Because after you found Lily…”
A pause.
“You found yourself.””
My breathing stopped.
“What?””
“You found yourself standing over her.””
The room tilted.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
“I didn’t hurt her.””
“I know.””
The answer came immediately.
And somehow, that terrified me more.
“You didn’t hurt Lily.””
I held the phone tighter.
“Then why?””
“Because Daniel wanted you to believe you did.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Vanessa continued.
“Maria, you don’t remember because Daniel gave you something.””
My heart raced.
“The night Lily died…”
A pause.
“He drugged you.””
Everything inside me went still.
The memories came back like broken glass.
A drink.
A headache.
The hallway spinning.
My hands shaking.
Daniel telling me I looked tired.
“You need rest, Maria.””
I remembered.
I had forgotten because I was never given the chance to remember.
I looked at Daniel.
“You drugged me.””
He didn’t deny it.
Lucas stepped back.
“Dad?””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“This is not what you think.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
Even now.
Even here.
He still said that.
Vanessa spoke through the phone.
“Maria, get out of there.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel knows you have the phone.””
I looked at Daniel.
“How?””
He looked toward the door.
And then I heard it.
The sound of footsteps.
Not one person.
Several.
Security.
Daniel had called them.
Lucas noticed too.
“He called someone.””
Daniel said nothing.
The phone in my hand suddenly felt like the only thing protecting us.
“Vanessa.””
“Yes?””
“Why are you helping me?””
Silence.
A real silence.
Then:
“Because I know what it feels like to lose everything because of him.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Her voice broke.
“I thought I was controlling Daniel.””
A pause.
“I was wrong.””
The footsteps got closer.
“Maria, there’s something you need to know.””
“What?””
“The baby before Lily…”
I waited.
“That wasn’t an accident either.””
My blood ran cold.
“Vanessa—”
The call ended.
The door opened.
Three security guards entered.
Daniel stood behind them.
“Give me the phone.””
Nobody moved.
Lucas stepped in front of me.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Move.””
“No.””
The boy’s voice shook.
But he stayed.
Daniel stared at his son for a long moment.
Then he said quietly:
“You’re making the same mistake everyone else made.””
Lucas looked confused.
“What mistake?””
“Trusting people who pretend they’re saving you.””
I stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You want answers?””
“Yes.””
“Then stop listening to Vanessa.””
“Why?””
“Because she’s the reason this happened.””
The accusation hung between us.
Lucas looked between them.
“You’re both lying.””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the truth.
Both of them had lied.
Both had secrets.
Both had destroyed lives.
But only one thing mattered now.
The evidence.
The phone.
The truth.
I held it behind me.
“You’re not getting this.””
Daniel’s expression became cold.
“Maria.””
“No.””
“You don’t understand what happens next.””
I looked at him.
“Police.””
A faint smile appeared.
“No.””
That frightened me.
“Why?””
“Because before they arrive…”
He glanced toward the security guards.
“You’ll need to explain why your fingerprints are all over the phone.””
My blood froze.
“What?””
Daniel nodded toward the device.
“You touched it.””
I stared at him.
“That’s insane.””
“Is it?””
He stepped closer.
“The video shows you were in Lily’s room.””
Lucas looked at him.
“You’re blaming her?””
Daniel ignored him.
“The police will see a dead child, a missing phone, and your fingerprints.””
I felt sick.
Because I understood.
This was what Daniel did.
He didn’t destroy evidence.
He changed the story around it.
Again.
Just like the pool.
Just like Emma.
Just like Lily.
But this time, I wasn’t alone.
Lucas stepped beside me.
“She didn’t do anything.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Son.””
“No.””
Lucas’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know what you do now.””
Daniel looked away.
And that small movement was enough.
The perfect father.
The respected businessman.
The man who controlled everything.
He was losing control.
Then the front doors of the mansion opened.
Voices filled the hallway.
“Police department!””
Daniel turned.
His face changed.
“What?””
Detective Harris walked into the room.
Behind him were two officers.
“I believe we’re looking for a phone.””
Daniel stared.
“How did you—”
Detective Harris looked at me.
Then at Lucas.
Then at the phone.
“Because someone sent us a message.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
The detective looked toward the entrance.
And everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Claire.
Daniel took a step backward.
“No.””
Claire looked directly at him.
“I told you one day the truth would come back.””
The room went silent.
Detective Harris took the phone from my hand.
“We have enough evidence to begin.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t know what’s on that phone.””
Claire answered:
“I do.””
Everyone looked at her.
She walked slowly into the room.
“I was the one who recorded the first video.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Claire looked at me.
“Maria, there’s something I never told you.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The reason Daniel couldn’t destroy the evidence…”
She looked at Daniel.
“…is because Lily wasn’t the only one who recorded him.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Claire reached into her bag.
And pulled out a small memory card.
“I had a copy.””
Daniel’s face drained of color.
Detective Harris took it.
Then Claire said the words that ended the Carter family’s final lie.
“And it proves who really killed Lily.””
Everyone waited.
Claire looked at me.
“Maria…”
Her voice shook.
“You didn’t forget because Daniel wanted you to.””
A pause.
“You forgot because you saw the person who did it.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Claire looked past me.
At the doorway.
At the person standing there.
May you like
And whispered:
“It was someone you trusted.””
