Chapter 5: The Diary That Was Never Meant to Be Found

The footsteps stopped outside the attic door.

Lucas and I froze.

The old wooden floor beneath us creaked with every tiny movement. Dust floated through the narrow beam of sunlight coming from the small attic window.

Neither of us spoke.

The notebook was still open in my hands.

Vanessa’s handwriting stared back at me.

*“Maria is becoming suspicious.””*

My fingers tightened around the pages.

Whoever was outside couldn’t see this.

Not yet.

Lucas grabbed my sleeve and pulled me behind a stack of old boxes.

The attic door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

For a moment, there was only silence.

I held my breath.

Then a voice came from the other side.

“Lucas.””

My entire body went cold.

Daniel.

The boy beside me trembled.

His father’s voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“Lucas, I know you’re up there.””

The child looked at me.

I could see the fear in his eyes.

Not the fear of being caught.

The fear of what would happen after.

Daniel knocked softly.

“Son, open the door.””

No response.

“Lucas.””

His voice changed.

Less like a father.

More like an order.

“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””

I looked at the notebook.

Then at Lucas.

He silently shook his head.

Don’t answer.

Daniel waited.

Then he spoke again.

“Maria is manipulating you.””

My jaw tightened.

Of course.

Even now.

Even with evidence.

Even with recordings.

He still needed to control the story.

“She wants you to believe things that aren’t true.””

Lucas’s hands curled into fists.

I whispered:

“Stay quiet.””

He nodded.

Daniel tried the handle again.

This time harder.

“Lucas, I’m not angry.””

A pause.

“I’m disappointed.””

The words clearly hurt the boy.

I watched his face change.

For a second, he looked like any child wanting approval from his father.

Then he remembered.

He remembered the recordings.

The lies.

The secrets.

And he looked away.

Daniel stayed outside for another minute.

Then his footsteps moved away.

But they didn’t go downstairs.

They stopped nearby.

Waiting.

Listening.

Lucas looked at me.

“He knows.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“What do we do?””

I looked around the attic.

A hidden room full of forgotten memories.

A place where the Carter family buried everything they didn’t want seen.

“We find the truth before he finds us.””

We waited ten more minutes before moving.

When we were sure Daniel had left, Lucas closed the attic door.

I returned to the notebook.

The first pages were filled with dates.

Most were ordinary.

Appointments.

Expenses.

Family events.

Then three years earlier, everything changed.

The handwriting became rushed.

Messy.

Like Vanessa had written while afraid someone might walk in.

*March 14*

*Daniel says we have no choice.*

*The trust cannot remain locked forever.*

I turned the page.

*March 16*

*Lily keeps waking up. Daniel says she notices too much.*

My stomach turned.

I stopped reading.

Lucas looked at me.

“What?””

I showed him.

His face went pale.

“Lily noticed?””

I continued.

*March 18*

*Claire saw him. She knows.*

*Daniel says she is only a nanny. Nobody will believe her.*

The next page had a dark stain across the corner.

Maybe water.

Maybe something else.

I forced myself to keep reading.

*March 20*

*Maria almost found the documents today.*

My heart stopped.

I remembered that day.

The laundry room.

The envelope.

The trust paperwork.

I had almost walked into Daniel’s office.

Almost.

The next sentence was underlined.

*“If Maria talks, we lose everything.””*

I closed the notebook.

I couldn’t read anymore.

For years, I had believed I was invisible.

Just an employee.

Someone who cleaned up after the family.

Someone nobody paid attention to.

But I had been wrong.

They noticed me.

They watched me.

They knew I was close.

Lucas sat on the floor.

“They wanted to hurt you.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

His voice became small.

“Because you knew.””

I nodded.

“But I didn’t know enough.””

A noise interrupted us.

A phone vibrating.

Lucas looked at his pocket.

Not his.

Mine.

My phone.

I pulled it out.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

A woman spoke.

“Maria, listen carefully.””

I recognized the voice.

Claire.

“Where are you?””

“No time.””

Her breathing sounded rushed.

“They know you found the diary.””

My heart dropped.

“How?””

“I saw Daniel leave the house.””

“What does that mean?””

“He’s going after you.””

I looked at Lucas.

The attic suddenly felt too small.

“Claire, tell me where you are.””

“I can’t.””

“Then tell me what to do.””

A pause.

Then:

“Find the second box.””

I looked around.

“What box?””

“In the attic.””

My eyes moved across the room.

“There are hundreds.””

“Maria.””

Her voice became urgent.

“The diary is only what Vanessa wanted you to find.””

I froze.

“What?””

“The real evidence is somewhere else.””

Lucas stood.

“What evidence?””

Claire heard him.

“Lucas is with you?””

“Yes.””

A long silence followed.

Then Claire whispered:

“Then he needs to know.””

My grip tightened on the phone.

“Know what?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“The reason Lily died wasn’t because of the trust.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

“Because she saw something.””

The attic seemed to disappear around me.

“What did she see?””

Before Claire could answer, the call cut off.

I stared at the phone.

“No.””

Lucas looked at me.

“What did she mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I already had a terrible feeling.

We searched through the attic faster.

Boxes opened.

Old clothes thrown aside.

Photographs scattered across the floor.

Finally, Lucas found a small metal container hidden behind a loose wooden panel.

“How did you know?””

“I didn’t.””

He pulled it out.

“It was already loose.””

The container was locked.

But unlike the attic door, this lock was newer.

Someone had hidden it recently.

I looked at Lucas.

“Do you have another key?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

I examined the box.

Then noticed something.

A small piece of paper taped underneath.

A code.

Four numbers.

I recognized them immediately.

Lily’s birthday.

My hands shook.

Someone wanted this found.

I entered the code.

The lock opened.

Inside was a stack of photographs.

Not family photographs.

Security photographs.

The kind taken by cameras.

The first picture showed the Carter kitchen.

The date was three years ago.

The night Lily died.

The second picture showed Daniel entering the room.

The third showed Vanessa following him.

The fourth showed something that made my blood freeze.

A tiny figure standing at the top of the stairs.

Watching.

A child.

Lily’s older brother.

Lucas.

He had been there.

He had seen something.

I looked at him.

His face had lost all color.

“I don’t remember.””

I turned the photograph around.

“Lucas.””

He stared at the image.

“I was awake?””

He stepped back.

“No.””

His breathing became faster.

“I was asleep.””

“Lucas.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“My dad told me I was asleep.””

I looked through the remaining pictures.

There were only two more.

The fifth photograph showed Daniel looking directly toward the camera.

As if he knew someone was watching.

The sixth photograph was different.

It wasn’t from the kitchen.

It was from the hallway.

It showed Daniel holding something in his hand.

A small bottle.

And beside him…

Was me.

Standing outside the room.

Watching.

I dropped the photograph.

Because suddenly I remembered.

A sound.

A movement.

A moment I had forgotten.

The night Lily died, I wasn’t just nearby.

I had seen Daniel too.

And he knew.

The final piece of the puzzle wasn’t hidden in the attic.

It was hidden in my own memory.

Then Lucas pointed at the back of the photograph.

“There’s writing.””

I turned it over.

Three words were written in black ink.

Not Vanessa’s handwriting.

Not Daniel’s.

Someone else’s.

*“She remembers everything.””*

At that exact moment, the attic door slammed open.

Daniel stood there.

His eyes moved from the photographs.

To the notebook.

To me.

Then to Lucas.

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.

“You should have left the past buried,” he said.

I stepped backward.

“You killed Lily.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“No.””

He looked at Lucas.

Then at me.

“Your problem, Maria…”

He slowly closed the attic door behind him.

“…is that you still don’t understand what happened that night.””

He took one step forward.

“Lily wasn’t the only person who saw something.””

My heart stopped.

Because I knew what he meant.

He wasn’t talking about Claire.

May you like

He wasn’t talking about Lucas.

He was talking about me.
