Chapter 8: The Woman in the Reflection
The frozen image remained on the screen.
A dark hallway.
A broken piece of history.
A reflection in the mirror.
Me.
I stared at it until my eyes hurt.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Lucas looked at me.
“Maria?””
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t explain.
Because the person in that reflection was impossible.
It was me.
Three years earlier.
Standing outside Lily’s room.
Watching.
Knowing.
Or at least…
That was what the image showed.
Daniel stood behind us, silent.
Too silent.
Then he spoke.
“You remember now.””
I turned around.
“Don’t.””
His expression changed.
Not sympathy.
Not concern.
Something colder.
“You were there.””
I looked back at the phone.
The video was still paused.
My own reflection stared back at me.
“I don’t remember this.””
Daniel gave a quiet laugh.
“That’s convenient.””
Lucas immediately stepped between us.
“Stop.””
Daniel looked at his son.
“You don’t know what you’re defending.””
“I know you lied.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“And you know nothing about her.””
He pointed toward me.
“Ask her why she never told anyone she was in Lily’s room that night.””
My chest tightened.
Because that was the question I had been avoiding.
Why hadn’t I told anyone?
Why had I forgotten?
Why had I buried that memory so deeply?
I looked at the phone again.
The video moved.
The screen had frozen only because the battery was low.
Lucas touched it.
The video continued.
Vanessa’s voice returned.
“But he forgot something.””
The camera angle shifted.
The person holding the phone moved.
Then Vanessa looked toward the doorway.
Toward me.
“Maria?””
My blood turned cold.
The video showed what happened next.
A younger version of me stepped into the room.
Confused.
Carrying folded towels.
Vanessa looked at me.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
My own voice came from the phone.
“I heard Lily crying.””
The memory hit me.
A flash.
A sound.
A feeling.
I was there.
I really was.
But there was more.
Something I had forgotten.
Vanessa turned toward Lily.
The little girl was sitting in her bed.
Holding the phone.
Holding evidence.
“Give that to me, sweetheart,” Vanessa said.
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
The room went silent.
Lucas covered his mouth.
Daniel stared at the screen.
The video continued.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“You don’t understand what you have.””
Lily hugged the phone.
“I heard you and Daddy.””
My heart stopped.
Vanessa looked toward me.
And that was the moment.
The moment I remembered.
I had walked into that room.
I had heard those words.
I had seen Vanessa’s face change.
She wasn’t grieving.
She was scared.
“Maria,” Vanessa said in the video.
My younger self looked at her.
“Yes?””
“Go downstairs.””
The command was sharp.
I remembered that.
I remembered feeling something was wrong.
But then Lily spoke.
“She hurt the baby.””
The room in the present became silent.
Lucas whispered:
“Baby?””
I stared at the screen.
Lily’s voice continued.
“Mommy hurt the baby.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Lily.””
The little girl started crying.
“I saw you.””
My hands began shaking.
Because suddenly I understood.
Lily wasn’t talking about herself.
She was talking about another child.
Another secret.
Another reason.
Vanessa looked toward me.
And my younger self finally understood something was wrong.
“What baby?”” I asked.
The video stopped.
The battery died.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Now you remember.””
I looked at him.
“What baby?””
He looked away.
And that terrified me.
Because Daniel Carter had spent years controlling everything.
But there was one thing even he didn’t want to say.
Lucas stepped toward him.
“Dad.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“What baby?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“It was before Lily.””
I felt my stomach drop.
Before Lily.
Another child.
Another secret.
Another tragedy.
I looked at Daniel.
“You had another baby?””
“No.””
His answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Then he corrected himself.
“We had another child.””
Lucas looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel sat down.
For the first time, he looked tired.
Older.
Like the weight of years had finally reached him.
“Before Lily was born…”
He stopped.
“There was a pregnancy.””
I waited.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“The baby died.””
Silence.
Lucas looked at me.
“How?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
I knew.
Because I remembered Vanessa’s words.
*She hurt the baby.*
“Vanessa.””
Daniel’s eyes lifted.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“She caused it?””
Daniel looked away.
“I don’t know.””
That answer angered me.
“You don’t know?””
His voice became defensive.
“You think everything is simple?””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I think you spent years protecting yourself.””
Daniel didn’t argue.
Because maybe he knew.
Maybe he finally knew there was no version of this story where he was innocent.
Lucas picked up the phone.
“We need the whole video.””
I nodded.
We found another charger.
The phone powered on again.
There were three files.
Three videos.
The first was the hallway.
The second was labeled with a date.
The third had no name.
Lucas opened the second.
The screen showed Daniel’s office.
Vanessa was there.
She was crying.
Not the fake tears she showed the world.
Real fear.
“Daniel, this has gone too far.””
Daniel stood near the window.
“You’re the one who started it.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I wanted control.””
A pause.
“But not this.””
Daniel turned.
“Don’t pretend you have a conscience now.””
I watched carefully.
Because this was the first time I had ever seen Vanessa afraid of Daniel.
Not angry.
Not annoyed.
Afraid.
She whispered:
“If Maria remembers, we’re finished.””
My name again.
Always my name.
Always me standing between their secrets and the world.
Daniel replied:
“She won’t.””
“How do you know?””
“Because nobody remembers things they can’t survive.””
I felt cold.
Lucas looked at me.
The video continued.
Vanessa sat down.
“What about Claire?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“She’s handled.””
My breathing stopped.
“Handled?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You promised nobody would get hurt.””
Daniel smiled.
A small, terrible smile.
“You should stop pretending you didn’t know what this required.””
The video ended.
No explanation.
No closure.
Just enough truth to make everything worse.
Then the third file appeared.
The unknown file.
Created on the same night Lily died.
Lucas pressed play.
The screen was black.
No image.
Only sound.
At first, there was nothing.
Then footsteps.
A door opening.
A child crying.
And a voice.
My voice.
“Please, wake up.””
I froze.
Lucas looked at me.
The recording continued.
My younger voice was shaking.
“Lily, please.””
A second voice appeared.
Vanessa.
“What did you do?””
My heart stopped.
Because Vanessa wasn’t speaking to Daniel.
She was speaking to me.
The recording continued.
“I didn’t do anything.””
My voice.
Terrified.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“But you touched her.””
The phone slipped slightly in Lucas’s hand.
“No…”
I stared at the screen.
I didn’t remember this.
I didn’t remember touching Lily.
I didn’t remember anything after opening that door.
The recording continued.
Then came a sound.
A crash.
A scream.
And finally…
A sentence from Daniel.
A sentence that made my entire body go numb.
“Maria, if you want to keep your life, you’ll say exactly what we tell you.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the truth was no longer just about what Daniel and Vanessa had done.
It was about what they had forced me to become.
A witness.
A victim.
And maybe…
A person who had unknowingly helped them hide everything.
Then the phone rang.
The old phone.
The one that had been dead for three years.
The screen lit up.
An incoming call.
May you like
The name displayed made my blood freeze.
*Vanessa Carter.*
