Chapter 4: The Nanny Who Survived

For a few seconds after Claire said those words, I forgot how to breathe.

“He was trying to kill me.””

The phone felt heavy against my ear.

The room around me disappeared.

All I could hear was the sound of my own heartbeat.

“Claire,” I whispered.

“What are you saying?””

There was silence on the other end.

Then a shaky breath.

“I should have told someone three years ago.””

“Why didn’t you?””

A bitter laugh escaped her.

“Because I was afraid nobody would believe me.””

I stood up from my chair.

“Claire, I believe you.””

“You shouldn’t.””

The fear in her voice was worse than anger.

It was the voice of someone who had spent years looking over her shoulder.

“Tell me what happened.””

Another pause.

Then she began.

“Lily wasn’t sick enough to die.””

I closed my eyes.

“I know.””

“No, Maria. You don’t.””

Her voice became quieter.

“She wasn’t supposed to die at all.””

The words settled over me like ice.

“What happened that night?””

“I found Daniel in the kitchen.””

“When?””

“After midnight.””

I walked toward the window.

The Carter mansion was visible in the distance, its lights glowing through the trees.

A place I had once called home.

A place where I had spent eleven years believing I was safe.

“What was he doing?””

Claire hesitated.

“He was putting something into Lily’s medicine bottle.””

My hand covered my mouth.

“Did you see what it was?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because he saw me.””

The line went quiet.

“He looked at me, Maria. He didn’t look surprised. He didn’t look scared.””

Claire’s voice cracked.

“He looked angry.””

I imagined that moment.

A man standing in a dark kitchen.

A baby sleeping upstairs.

A young nanny discovering something she was never meant to see.

“What happened after?””

“He told me to forget what I saw.””

“And you refused.””

“Yes.””

Claire took a deep breath.

“I told him I would call the police.””

My stomach tightened.

“And then?””

“He smiled.””

The single word sent a chill through me.

“He said something I will never forget.””

I waited.

“He said, ‘You’re confusing being right with being powerful.’”

I stared at the wall.

That sounded exactly like Daniel.

Not a man who lost control.

A man who believed control belonged to him.

“What happened next?””

“I went upstairs to get Lily.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to take her away from that house.””

Claire’s voice shook.

“But before I reached the nursery, Vanessa stopped me.””

I froze.

“Vanessa was there?””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

“She knew.””

I sat down again.

“She knew what Daniel did?””

“She helped him.””

The room felt colder.

“No.””

“I wish I was wrong.””

Claire’s breathing became uneven.

“But I saw them together after Lily died.””

My eyes closed.

“Together?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The morning after.””

I remembered that morning.

The entire house covered in darkness.

Daniel refusing to speak.

Vanessa crying in the living room.

The police arriving.

The neighbors bringing flowers.

Everyone believing they were grieving parents.

“What did you see?””

Claire answered softly.

“They weren’t mourning.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What were they doing?””

“They were celebrating.””

I stopped moving.

“Claire…”

“I know how it sounds.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“Tell me exactly what you saw.””

She was silent.

Then:

“They were in Daniel’s office.””

“Doing what?””

“Looking at documents.””

“What documents?””

“I don’t know.””

A pause.

“But Vanessa said something.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

Claire whispered:

“She said, ‘Now the trust is safe.’”

Everything connected.

The trust.

The children.

The accidents.

Emma.

I walked back to the desk and grabbed a notebook.

“Claire, where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because if Daniel knows I’m alive—”

“He already knows.””

Silence.

“What?””

I swallowed.

“You called me.””

A pause.

Then Claire whispered:

“Oh no.””

“What?””

“You don’t understand.””

The fear returned to her voice.

“I didn’t call you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I didn’t call you, Maria.””

The room went completely silent.

My eyes moved slowly toward my phone screen.

Unknown number.

“Then who…”

Claire interrupted.

“Someone gave you my number.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then Claire said:

“Someone who wants you to find the truth.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

The screen went dark.

For several minutes, I didn’t move.

Then another notification appeared.

A message.

From the same unknown number.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

*Check the attic before Daniel destroys it.*

My blood ran cold.

The attic.

The Carter mansion had an attic.

A place nobody was allowed to enter.

Not employees.

Not visitors.

Nobody.

When I first started working there, I asked Daniel about it.

He simply said:

“Old things belong in old places.””

At the time, I thought he meant furniture.

Now I wondered what else was hidden there.

The next morning, I returned to the estate.

Not as an employee.

Not as someone who belonged there.

I came back as someone looking for answers.

Lucas met me near the garden.

He looked exhausted.

“Did Claire call you?””

I stopped.

“How did you know?””

His face changed.

“Because I know who sent you the message.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Lucas looked toward the house.

“Me.””

I blinked.

“You?””

He nodded.

“I found Claire’s number in Dad’s old phone.””

My voice lowered.

“Lucas, why?””

“Because nobody listened to her.””

The honesty of his answer broke my heart.

“She tried to tell people.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I found her letters.””

“Where?””

He pointed toward the mansion.

“The attic.””

I looked at the house.

“So there are things hidden there.””

Lucas nodded.

“Dad thinks nobody knows.””

“Why did you tell me?””

The boy looked down.

“Because yesterday I watched Dad hurt you.””

My chest tightened.

“And I remembered something.””

“What?””

“When Lily died…”

His voice became quiet.

“Claire tried to protect her too.””

The two of us stood there in silence.

A child and a former maid.

Both searching through the remains of a family that had hidden too much.

We entered the mansion through the back door.

Lucas knew the alarm codes.

That fact alone told me he had spent a lot of time hiding things from his parents.

We climbed the narrow staircase toward the attic.

Every step creaked.

Dust filled the air.

The door at the top was locked.

Lucas reached into his pocket.

“I found this yesterday.””

He pulled out a key.

“Where did you get it?””

“Dad’s desk.””

The lock clicked.

The attic door opened.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of them.

Old photographs.

Documents.

Children’s toys.

Everything the Carter family had thrown away but never destroyed.

Lucas walked toward a small wooden box.

“I found this.””

He opened it.

Inside was a notebook.

The cover had one word written on it.

*Lily.*

My hands shook as I picked it up.

I opened the first page.

The handwriting was Vanessa’s.

My heart sank.

Because the first sentence wasn’t a memory.

It wasn’t a goodbye.

It was a plan.

*“Daniel says we only need one more mistake before everything belongs to us.””*

I turned the page.

And the next line made my entire body go numb.

*“Maria is becoming suspicious.””*

I looked at Lucas.

He looked terrified.

Then we heard something below us.

A door closing.

Someone had entered the mansion.

Lucas whispered:

“Maria…”

Footsteps moved toward the staircase.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Someone was coming up.

May you like

And whoever it was…

Already knew we were in the attic.
