Chapter 3: The Voice From Three Years Ago

The recording played again.

“I know what you did to Lily.””

Claire’s voice came through my laptop speakers, shaking but clear.

I stared at the screen.

My hand hovered over the mouse, unable to move.

For three years, I had wondered what happened inside the Carter house on the night Lily died.

I had cleaned the hallway afterward.

I had washed the sheets.

I had watched Daniel and Vanessa accept sympathy from everyone around them.

I had watched a mother cry over a daughter she supposedly lost by accident.

But now a voice from the past was telling me something different.

Something impossible.

I pressed play again.

Static filled the room.

Then Claire spoke.

“Daniel, you need to stop pretending this was an accident.””

My heart pounded.

The recording wasn’t a conversation.

It was a message.

A message someone had saved.

A message someone had hidden.

“I saw the medication bottle,” Claire continued.

“I saw you put it there.””

I covered my mouth.

My mind immediately went back to that night.

Lily had been sick.

Only a little fever.

Nothing serious.

Vanessa told me she gave Lily medicine before bed.

The next morning, everything changed.

The ambulance.

The screaming.

The police questions.

The silence afterward.

Claire’s voice trembled.

“You told me Lily would sleep through the night. You said nobody would notice. But I noticed.””

A chair scraped behind me.

I turned.

Lucas was still standing near the doorway.

His face had gone pale.

He had heard everything.

“Lucas,” I whispered.

He looked at the laptop.

“That’s her voice.””

I nodded slowly.

“Claire.””

He stepped closer.

“Can we listen to the rest?””

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to protect him.

He was eight years old.

He shouldn’t have been carrying secrets about death.

But then I remembered something.

He was already carrying them.

He had carried them alone for three years.

I pressed play.

Claire continued.

“You said it was the only way. You said if Lily disappeared, the money would stay protected.””

A pause.

Then Daniel’s voice.

Quiet.

Cold.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I froze.

Daniel.

It was definitely him.

“You don’t understand what’s at stake.””

Claire answered.

“I understand perfectly. Your daughter is dead because you wanted control of a trust fund.””

Lucas covered his mouth.

The room became silent except for the recording.

Daniel’s voice became sharper.

“You were paid to take care of her, Claire. Not to investigate my family.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“I took care of her. That’s why I’m the only one who knows she didn’t die because of an illness.””

I looked at Lucas.

He looked like the world had just collapsed around him.

“Turn it off,” he whispered.

I stopped the recording immediately.

“Lucas—”

“I knew it.””

His voice cracked.

“I knew something was wrong.””

He sat down on the edge of the bed.

“When Lily died, Dad told me accidents happen.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“But Mom cried too much.””

I didn’t understand.

“What do you mean?””

Lucas wiped his face.

“She cried when people were watching.””

My stomach tightened.

“And when nobody was?””

He looked at me.

“She stopped.””

A child shouldn’t notice things like that.

A child shouldn’t have to learn the difference between real grief and a performance.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”” I asked gently.

Lucas looked down.

“Because Dad told me if I talked about Lily, bad things would happen.””

My blood ran cold.

“What kind of bad things?””

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“He said families fall apart when children don’t obey.””

I closed my eyes.

Daniel Carter had spent years controlling everyone around him.

His wife.

His employees.

His children.

Maybe even the truth itself.

The next morning, I went to the police station with the flash drive.

I expected questions.

I expected doubt.

I expected someone to tell me it wasn’t enough.

Instead, Detective Harris looked at the evidence folder and became very serious.

“You understand what you’re giving us?””

“Yes.””

“This could reopen a previous investigation.””

I nodded.

“Good.””

He leaned forward.

“Why now?””

I thought about that question.

Why now?

Because Emma almost died.

Because Vanessa almost destroyed the evidence.

Because Lucas finally found the courage to speak.

“Because another child almost became another secret.””

Detective Harris studied my face.

Then he opened the folder.

“Do you know where Claire is now?””

I shook my head.

“She left after Lily died.””

“Did she contact you?””

“No.””

“Did she ever tell you she was afraid?””

I hesitated.

Then remembered.

One moment.

One small moment I had buried.

The day Claire left.

She had stopped me in the kitchen.

Her hands were shaking.

“Maria,” she had whispered.

I had looked up.

“What’s wrong?””

She glanced toward the hallway.

Then said:

“Take care of the children.””

At the time, I thought she meant because she was leaving.

But now…

Now I wondered if she was warning me.

Detective Harris wrote something down.

“Anything else?””

I looked at the flash drive.

“Yes.””

I told him about the trust document.

The one I had seen in the laundry room.

His expression changed.

“What trust document?””

“I don’t know exactly. I only saw one sentence.””

“What sentence?””

I repeated it.

“The beneficiary shall remain protected until the youngest child reaches eighteen years of age.””

Detective Harris leaned back.

“That’s interesting.””

“Why?””

“Because if someone wanted access before that…”

He didn’t finish.

He didn’t need to.

I understood.

A child wasn’t just a child in Daniel Carter’s world.

A child was a key.

A condition.

A deadline.

A financial obstacle.

When I returned to the Carter estate later that afternoon with an officer escorting me to collect my belongings, the mansion felt different.

Same marble floors.

Same expensive furniture.

Same perfect decorations.

But now I could see what was underneath.

A beautiful house built on ugly secrets.

Vanessa was waiting in the entry hall.

She looked exhausted.

But not broken.

People like Vanessa didn’t break easily.

They adapted.

“You brought the police?”” she asked.

I didn’t answer.

She looked at the officer.

“This is harassment.””

The officer remained calm.

“Ms. Carter, we’re here while Ms. Maria collects her personal items.””

Vanessa stepped closer to me.

“You think you’ve won?””

I looked at her.

“No.””

That surprised her.

“I think I finally know what game you’re playing.””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“I know about Lily.””

The color disappeared from her face.

For the first time since I had known her, Vanessa looked powerless.

“Who told you?””

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t need to.

Her reaction already told me enough.

She looked toward the staircase.

Then toward Daniel’s office.

“Maria…”

Her voice became softer.

Almost human.

“You need to be careful.””

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

She looked away.

“It’s a warning.””

Before I could respond, Daniel appeared at the top of the stairs.

His eyes locked onto me.

Then onto the officer.

Then onto Vanessa.

“What is happening?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel walked downstairs slowly.

“Maria, you need to leave.””

I picked up my suitcase.

“I was already planning to.””

As I walked past him, he grabbed my arm.

The officer immediately stepped forward.

“Sir.””

Daniel released me.

But he leaned close enough for only me to hear.

“You don’t know what you’re digging into.””

I looked at him.

“Neither did Lily.””

His face changed.

A flash of anger.

A flash of panic.

Then it disappeared.

But I saw it.

And I knew.

I had hit something real.

That night, I sat in my apartment staring at the evidence copies the detective had given me.

I thought the worst secret in the Carter family was that they had tried to frame me.

I thought Lily’s death was the beginning of the nightmare.

I was wrong.

At midnight, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a woman whispered:

“Maria?””

I sat up.

“Who is this?””

The voice trembled.

“It’s Claire.””

My heart stopped.

“Claire?””

“I don’t have much time.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then she said:

“I know why Daniel really killed Lily.””

The room went silent.

“Claire, tell me.””

Her voice dropped.

“Lily wasn’t the target.””

A chill moved through my body.

“What do you mean?””

Claire breathed heavily.

“He wasn’t trying to remove a child.””

A long pause.

“He was trying to remove the person who knew the truth.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who?””

May you like

Claire answered in a whisper.

“Maria… he was trying to kill me.””
