Chapter 9: The Person Lily Was Warning About
Marcello moved before he even realized he was moving.
One second, Isabella stood at the end of the hallway.
The next, he had Lily behind him.
His body reacted before his mind could catch up.
A father’s instinct.
A warning older than fear.
“Stay away from her.””
His voice was low.
Dangerously calm.
Isabella looked at him.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Almost disappointed.
“That’s what you said twelve years ago.””
Marcello froze.
“What?””
Clara looked between them.
“Isabella…”
But Isabella kept staring at him.
“You always did this.””
“Did what?””
“Protected Lily.””
Her eyes softened.
“And never asked who you needed to protect her from.””
Marcello tightened his jaw.
“I know exactly who I need to protect her from.””
He looked at Isabella.
“You.””
A painful smile crossed her face.
“You really believe that?””
“You kidnapped your own sister.””
“I saved her.””
The answer stunned him.
Clara stepped forward.
“You locked me upstairs.””
“I hid you.””
“You trapped me.””
“I kept Victor from finding you.””
The two women stared at each other.
And for the first time, Marcello saw something he hadn’t noticed before.
The hatred between them wasn’t simple.
It was mixed with something else.
Pain.
History.
A relationship destroyed by something much bigger than jealousy.
Isabella looked at the voice recorder on the floor.
“You found Elena’s message.””
Marcello’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew it existed.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because I helped her hide it.””
Silence.
Clara looked shocked.
“You?””
Isabella looked at her sister.
“Don’t pretend you’re the only one who cared about her.””
Marcello stared.
“Then why have you been pretending to be her?””
Isabella looked at him.
“Because nobody listens to the dead.””
The answer was quiet.
Almost heartbreaking.
Marcello didn’t know what to say.
Isabella continued.
“When Elena died, everyone wanted a simple story.””
She walked slowly down the hallway.
“A tragic accident.””
“A grieving husband.””
“A child who lost her mother.””
“A family moving forward.””
Her eyes became colder.
“But the truth was never simple.””
Marcello watched her carefully.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Isabella stopped.
“You’re not ready.””
“I’m done hearing that.””
“No.””
She looked directly at him.
“You’re not.””
Marcello stepped forward.
“I lost my wife.””
“Yes.””
“I raised my daughter alone.””
“Yes.””
“I spent twelve years believing a lie.””
Her expression changed.
“That’s exactly why you’re not ready.””
He felt anger rise.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
“No.””
She looked at Lily.
“She does.””
Everyone turned.
Lily stood silently behind Marcello.
Her eyes were fixed on Isabella.
Not afraid.
Studying.
Like she was trying to understand something.
Isabella crouched down.
“Lily.””
Marcello immediately moved.
But Lily spoke first.
“It’s okay, Daddy.””
He stopped.
The little girl looked at Isabella.
“You were sad.””
A strange expression crossed Isabella’s face.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The question seemed to hurt her.
“Because I lost someone.””
“Mommy?””
Isabella nodded.
“She was my friend.””
Marcello watched closely.
“My wife was your friend?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you lie to me?””
Isabella looked at him.
“Because Elena asked me to.””
The hallway went silent.
Marcello shook his head.
“No.””
“She knew Victor would come back.””
“Victor is dead.””
“No.””
Isabella looked toward the staircase.
“He disappeared.””
The distinction mattered.
And Marcello understood why.
“Where did he go?””
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian’s voice came from below.
“Looking for what Elena left behind.””
Everyone turned.
Adrian stood at the bottom of the stairs.
His suit was still perfect.
His expression still calm.
But now Marcello saw him differently.
Not as an old friend.
Not as a trusted advisor.
As a man who had spent years hiding.
“You.””
Marcello’s voice carried anger.
Adrian looked up.
“I was wondering when we would finally have this conversation.””
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Elena.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about the mirror.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Lily.””
Adrian looked at the child.
“Yes.””
Marcello felt sick.
“How long?””
Adrian was silent.
Then:
“Since before she was born.””
Clara whispered:
“No…”
Marcello stared.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian walked up the stairs slowly.
“It means Elena and I were investigating Victor long before you knew anything.””
Marcello’s eyes narrowed.
“You were helping her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she die?””
Adrian stopped.
For the first time, emotion appeared on his face.
Regret.
“Because I was too late.””
Victor laughed.
A dark, bitter sound.
“Still pretending to be the hero?””
Everyone looked at him.
Victor stood near the hallway entrance.
Adrian turned.
“You’re alive.””
Victor smiled.
“You sound disappointed.””
“No.””
Adrian’s voice hardened.
“I’m surprised.””
Marcello looked between them.
“Someone explain what is happening.””
Victor answered.
“Adrian and I have been fighting for years.””
“Over what?””
Victor looked at Lily.
“Her.””
Marcello’s blood turned cold.
“No.””
Victor continued.
“Your daughter carries something Elena discovered.””
“What?””
“Evidence.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Marcello looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because he’s using the same trick he always uses.””
Victor smiled.
“And what trick is that?””
“Making people believe the truth is whatever hurts them most.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Lily stepped forward.
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at Adrian.
“Your smile.””
Adrian froze.
Marcello looked at his daughter.
“What?””
She stared at Adrian.
“You have the same smile.””
Adrian’s face changed.
Not much.
But enough.
Marcello saw it.
The fear.
“What smile?””
Lily looked at him.
“The one from Mommy’s last day.””
The hallway went silent.
Adrian’s expression became unreadable.
Marcello slowly turned toward him.
“Lily.””
His voice shook.
“Are you saying Adrian was there?””
The little girl nodded.
“Yes.””
Adrian whispered:
“No.””
But it wasn’t a denial.
It was fear.
Marcello stepped closer.
“You were there.””
Adrian looked away.
“I tried to help her.””
“Then why did Lily see you?””
“Because memories are not always accurate.””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
The little girl’s voice was quiet.
“Because he was smiling.””
Adrian’s face went pale.
And Marcello realized something.
Lily didn’t remember faces because they were important.
She remembered them because of emotions.
The things adults tried hardest to hide.
Victor suddenly stepped forward.
“Ask him what happened after Elena found the documents.””
Marcello looked at Adrian.
“What documents?””
Adrian said nothing.
That silence answered everything.
“What documents?””
Still nothing.
Marcello’s anger exploded.
“Answer me!””
Adrian finally looked at him.
“The documents that could destroy Victor.””
“And?””
Adrian’s eyes moved to Lily.
“And prove that Elena knew the truth.””
Marcello stared.
“About what?””
Adrian looked at Isabella.
Then Clara.
Then Victor.
Finally, Lily.
“About who Lily’s biological father really was.””
The world stopped.
Marcello felt like he had forgotten how to breathe.
“No.””
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
“Elena was trying to protect her.””
Marcello looked at Lily.
Then back at Adrian.
“Who is her father?””
Nobody answered.
Then Isabella stepped forward.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“She was never supposed to find out this way.””
Marcello’s voice broke.
“Who?””
Isabella looked at Victor.
Then at Adrian.
Then at him.
And whispered:
“Neither of them.””
A silence.
Then:
“Because Lily’s father…”
She looked directly at Marcello.
“…was you.””
Marcello froze.
The words made no sense.
“What?””
Isabella continued.
“But Elena knew someone would try to convince you otherwise.””
She pointed at the voice recorder.
“Listen to the final message.””
Marcello looked down.
The recorder had one more file.
One they hadn’t heard.
He pressed play.
Static.
Then Elena’s voice.
Shaking.
Afraid.
“Marcello…”
A pause.
“If you are hearing this, then they have already tried to make you doubt yourself.””
Marcello’s eyes widened.
Elena continued:
“Please remember one thing.””
Her voice broke.
“You were there.””
A pause.
“You chose to save Lily.””
Everyone became still.
“And someone punished you for it.””
The recording ended.
Marcello stared at the device.
Then slowly looked up.
Because suddenly, he remembered.
Not everything.
Not yet.
But enough.
The rain.
The road.
Elena.
Lily crying.
His own hands shaking.
And a final moment before the darkness.
A voice whispering:
“Forget.””
Marcello looked at Adrian.
Then Victor.
Then Isabella.
And realized the truth was not about discovering what happened.
It was about remembering who made him forget.
And behind him, Lily whispered:
“Daddy…”
He turned.
“What?””
Her face was pale.
“He’s coming back.””
Marcello frowned.
“Who?””
Lily looked toward the mansion entrance.
“The person who erased your memory.””
The front doors slowly opened.
And standing outside in the rain…
Was someone Marcello had not seen in twelve years.
May you like
Someone everyone believed was dead.
Elena.
