Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Memory
Marcello stopped believing in coincidences.
Not after tonight.
Not after seeing two women with the same face.
Not after discovering that a stranger knew secrets about his family.
And definitely not after seeing Adrian standing beside Elena in a mirror reflection that should have shown nothing.
His mind fought against what his eyes had seen.
Because there were explanations for almost everything.
A hidden room.
A stolen identity.
A business betrayal.
A woman with a secret.
But this…
This was different.
This was impossible.
“Daddy?””
Lily’s voice pulled him back.
He looked down at her.
Her small face was pale.
Not because she understood everything.
Because she understood enough to know he was scared.
Marcello immediately knelt beside her.
“Lily, look at me.””
She did.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
“Are you scared?””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“Only when he comes close.””
Marcello’s heart tightened.
“Who?””
She pointed toward the mirror.
“Adrian.””
The name sounded heavier now.
Because everyone had reacted to it.
The woman hiding in the room.
Isabella.
Everyone except Marcello.
Because he was the only one who didn’t know the truth.
He slowly stood.
“Where is he?””
The mirror showed only their reflections now.
No Adrian.
No Elena.
Nothing.
The woman beside him spoke.
“He’s gone.””
Marcello turned toward her.
“You knew he was there.””
She looked away.
“Yes.””
“How?””
The woman took a slow breath.
“Because I’ve seen him do it before.””
“Do what?””
“Appear when he wants someone to remember.””
Marcello stared.
“You’re saying he can control what people see?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He can’t create memories.””
“Then what?””
“He can reveal them.””
Marcello looked at Lily.
A terrible thought entered his mind.
“How long has my daughter been seeing things?””
The woman hesitated.
Too long.
That was the answer.
Marcello’s voice became sharper.
“How long?””
The woman looked at Lily.
“Since she was little.””
Marcello felt anger rise.
Not at Lily.
Never at Lily.
At everyone who knew something and said nothing.
“Who knew?””
Nobody answered.
“Who knew my daughter was seeing things?””
The woman looked toward Isabella.
“Your wife.””
Marcello froze.
“My wife?””
The woman nodded.
“Before she died.””
The words hit harder than he expected.
“My wife knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
The woman’s eyes softened.
“Because Elena had the same ability.””
The hallway became silent.
Marcello stared at her.
“No.””
The woman didn’t argue.
She simply said:
“She did.””
“No.””
His voice became louder.
“My wife was a normal person.””
“Everyone is normal until they see something nobody else can.””
Marcello looked away.
His memories started rearranging themselves.
Small moments.
Things Elena had said that he never understood.
The way she would suddenly become quiet during conversations.
The way she would stare at old photographs.
The way she once told him:
“Some people leave footprints even after they’re gone.””
At the time, he thought she was being poetic.
Now…
He wasn’t sure.
“What did Elena see?”” he asked.
The woman looked at him.
“She saw Adrian.””
Marcello’s jaw tightened.
“Who is he?””
The woman didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Your oldest friend.””
The words felt like a punch.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Adrian worked for me.””
“He still does.””
Marcello looked toward the staircase.
“He’s my financial advisor.””
The woman nodded.
“And he was Elena’s closest friend before he became yours.””
Marcello felt sick.
“No.””
The woman watched his reaction.
“You didn’t know?””
“No.””
“That’s why Isabella chose you.””
The sentence made him look up.
“What does that mean?””
The woman stepped closer.
“She didn’t just steal my identity.””
She lowered her voice.
“She stole the identity of someone you trusted.””
Marcello thought about Adrian.
The man who had helped him build his company.
The man who had attended family dinners.
The man who had held Lily when she was a baby.
The man who had stood beside him after Elena’s funeral.
A memory surfaced.
Adrian at the cemetery.
His hand on Marcello’s shoulder.
His words.
*“I’ll protect your family.””*
Marcello suddenly felt cold.
Because maybe that promise had never meant what he thought it meant.
A sound came from downstairs.
A phone ringing.
Again.
Everyone froze.
Marcello checked his phone.
This time, there was no unknown number.
The name appeared.
*Adrian Vale.*
The woman immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t answer.””
Marcello looked at the screen.
“Why?””
“Because he wants to know what you know.””
“And if I don’t answer?””
“He’ll know anyway.””
The phone kept ringing.
Lily looked at it.
“He’s angry.””
Marcello looked down.
“How do you know?””
“He’s squeezing his hand.””
“What?””
Lily pointed at the phone.
“He does that when he’s angry.””
A chill moved through him.
Because she wasn’t looking at the phone.
She was remembering.
Marcello answered.
The voice came immediately.
“Marcello.””
Calm.
Smooth.
Familiar.
Adrian.
Marcello said nothing.
“Are you still at the party?””
“No.””
A pause.
Adrian noticed.
Of course he noticed.
He always noticed everything.
“Where are you?””
Marcello looked at the people around him.
The woman.
His daughter.
The room.
The secrets.
“Why?””
Another pause.
Then Adrian laughed softly.
“You sound different.””
“How?””
“Like someone finally told you the truth.””
Marcello’s grip tightened.
“What truth?””
Adrian sighed.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Pretend you don’t know.””
Marcello looked toward Lily.
“Who are you?””
Silence.
Then Adrian answered:
“That’s a dangerous question.””
“Why?””
“Because once you know the answer, you can’t go back.””
Marcello felt his anger burning.
“You were with Elena the night she died.””
The line went quiet.
A long silence.
Then Adrian spoke.
“Who told you that?””
Not denial.
Not shock.
A question.
Marcello felt his stomach drop.
“You didn’t say no.””
Adrian’s voice became colder.
“Marcello.””
“What?””
“Where is Lily?””
The question changed everything.
Marcello moved away from everyone.
“She’s with me.””
“No.””
The certainty in Adrian’s voice frightened him.
“No?””
“She shouldn’t be there.””
Marcello’s blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian lowered his voice.
“It means Isabella was right.””
“About what?””
“Your daughter.””
Marcello looked at Lily.
“What about her?””
A pause.
Then Adrian said:
“Lily remembers things she was never supposed to see.””
The call ended.
Marcello stared at the phone.
The woman looked at him.
“What did he say?””
Marcello didn’t answer.
Because he was looking at Lily.
His daughter was staring at the staircase.
At something above them.
“What is it?”” he asked.
She didn’t move.
“Lily?””
Slowly, she pointed upward.
“There.””
Marcello followed her finger.
At the top of the hallway.
A shadow moved.
Someone standing near the old door.
Someone watching them.
The woman whispered:
“No…”
Marcello looked at her.
“What?””
She stepped backward.
Her face drained of color.
“That’s not Adrian.””
“Then who is it?””
The figure stepped forward.
The light touched his face.
Marcello froze.
Because he knew that face too.
Everyone did.
It was the face from the old photographs.
The face from the family room.
The face of a man who had supposedly died twelve years ago.
Elena’s first husband.
Lily’s biological father.
A man Marcello had never met.
A man whose name appeared on Elena’s old documents only once.
And then disappeared forever.
The woman whispered:
“Adrian is not the only person who came back.””
The man at the end of the hallway smiled.
And Lily quietly said:
“Daddy…”
Marcello looked at her.
“What?””
May you like
Her voice trembled.
“That’s the man Mommy was running away from.””
