Chapter 4: The Letter With Lily’s Name

Marcello stared at the black envelope on the floor.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The mansion continued breathing around them.

Music drifted from the ballroom.

Guests laughed downstairs.

Servers carried trays of champagne through rooms filled with people who had no idea that something impossible was happening above their heads.

But inside that hallway, everything had stopped.

Because someone had left an envelope.

Not for him.

Not for the woman hiding in the room.

For Lily.

Marcello slowly stepped forward.

The woman beside him immediately grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

Her eyes were fixed on the envelope.

“Because she wants you to open it.””

“That’s usually what people want when they leave letters.””

“No.””

Her voice became softer.

“That’s not a letter.””

Marcello looked down.

“What is it?””

The woman swallowed.

“A trap.””

Behind him, Lily spoke.

“It’s okay, Daddy.””

Marcello turned.

His daughter was standing there, holding the edge of her dress.

“You know what’s inside?””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why do you think it’s okay?””

The little girl looked at the envelope.

“She wants us to know.””

Marcello frowned.

“Who?””

Lily looked toward the empty mirror.

“The lady who wears someone else.””

The words made the woman in the room close her eyes.

She looked exhausted.

Like every sentence from Lily confirmed a fear she had been carrying for months.

Marcello crouched beside his daughter.

“Lily, listen to Daddy.””

She looked at him.

“If something scares you, you tell me.””

“I’m not scared.””

“I know.””

He touched her shoulder gently.

“But sometimes brave people are still careful.””

Lily nodded.

Then she pointed at the envelope.

“She put my name on it.””

“Yes.””

“Because she knows me.””

Marcello felt a chill.

That was the part he couldn’t understand.

How did Isabella know about Lily?

Not just know her name.

Know her enough to leave something specifically for her.

He picked up the envelope.

It was heavier than it looked.

The paper was thick.

Expensive.

There was no address.

No return name.

Only one word written across the front.

*LILY.*

The handwriting was elegant.

Almost beautiful.

Marcello turned it over.

The seal was already broken.

Someone had opened it before.

Or someone had intended for him to open it easily.

He pulled out the paper inside.

The woman beside him stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Marcello unfolded it.

At first, there was only one sentence.

A sentence that made his stomach tighten.

*Your daughter saw the truth because children remember what adults are taught to ignore.*

He read it again.

Then again.

The woman whispered:

“She knows.””

Marcello looked at her.

“She knows what?””

“That Lily saw me.””

“No.””

He held the letter tighter.

“She knows Lily sees things.””

The woman’s face changed.

“What do you mean?””

Marcello looked down at his daughter.

And suddenly remembered every strange moment he had ignored.

The time Lily had told him the neighbor was crying before anyone knew the neighbor had lost her husband.

The time she had pointed at a cracked wall in their old house and said, “The water is hiding there.””

Three days later, they discovered a leaking pipe behind it.

The time she had refused to hug a family friend because she said, “His smile doesn’t match his eyes.””

Marcello had always thought she was imaginative.

Sensitive.

A child with a powerful little mind.

But now…

He wasn’t sure anymore.

The woman noticed his expression.

“Your daughter has done this before.””

It wasn’t a question.

Marcello looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because my sister knows.””

“Your sister?””

The woman nodded.

“She has always been obsessed with people who notice things.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if you know her.””

She looked toward the stairs.

“She spent her whole life being invisible.””

Marcello waited.

The woman continued.

“Everyone thought I was the special one. The successful one. The beautiful one.””

Her voice became bitter.

“But she was always watching.””

“Watching what?””

“Everything.””

The woman looked at Lily.

“People’s habits. Their lies. Their weaknesses.””

Marcello looked back at the letter.

“So she planned all this?””

“Yes.””

“For six months?””

“Yes.””

“Why reveal herself tonight?””

The woman didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Because at that exact moment, every phone in the hallway started ringing.

Marcello’s.

The woman’s.

Several guests’ phones downstairs.

The sound echoed through the mansion.

A dozen screens lit up.

Then dozens.

Someone had sent something to everyone at the event.

Marcello unlocked his phone.

A video appeared.

No message.

No explanation.

Just a video file.

The woman beside him whispered:

“Don’t watch it.””

Marcello looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because that’s what she wants.””

“And what happens if I don’t?””

“She’ll show it anyway.””

He pressed play.

The screen showed the ballroom.

The same ballroom they had just left.

But the video was from earlier.

Before the guests arrived.

Before the music.

Before the celebration.

The camera angle was strange.

Hidden.

Like someone had secretly recorded the room.

Then Isabella appeared.

The real Isabella.

The woman standing beside him.

She walked into the empty ballroom wearing the emerald dress.

She was laughing.

Talking to someone off-camera.

A man.

Then Adrian stepped into view.

Marcello felt his chest tighten.

The two of them looked completely comfortable together.

Not strangers.

Not accomplices who had just met.

Partners.

Adrian handed Isabella a folder.

She opened it.

Inside were documents.

Then the camera zoomed in.

Marcello froze.

Because he recognized the logo at the top.

His own company.

The woman beside him gasped.

“What?””

Marcello ignored her.

He watched.

Isabella looked through the documents.

Then she smiled.

A smile that had nothing to do with fear.

A smile full of victory.

Adrian pointed toward the papers.

And although the audio was unclear, Marcello could make out a few words.

“After tonight…”

A pause.

Then:

“…everything belongs to us.””

The video ended.

The hallway became silent again.

Marcello stared at the black screen.

His mind raced.

His company.

His documents.

His life.

Somehow, this was connected to him.

The woman looked at him.

“Now you understand.””

Marcello turned.

“Understand what?””

“Why she chose tonight.””

He said nothing.

The woman continued.

“Your daughter wasn’t the first thing she noticed.””

“What was?””

“You.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“What does my company have to do with this?””

The woman looked away.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know something.””

She closed her eyes.

“My sister doesn’t steal people’s lives.””

Marcello waited.

“She replaces them.””

The words hung in the air.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, Lily suddenly grabbed Marcello’s hand.

“Daddy.””

He looked down.

“What?””

“She’s coming.””

The woman immediately looked toward the stairs.

“No.””

Marcello heard it too.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone walking toward them.

Not running.

Not hiding.

The footsteps stopped at the end of the hallway.

A voice spoke.

Isabella’s voice.

“Marcello.””

He turned.

She stood there alone.

The emerald dress.

The perfect makeup.

The confident smile.

Exactly as she had appeared downstairs.

Except now she wasn’t pretending.

“You’ve had enough time to be confused,” she said.

Marcello stepped in front of Lily.

“Who are you?””

The woman behind him whispered:

“Don’t answer her questions.””

Isabella smiled.

“I’m the only person here who can tell you the truth.””

Marcello stared at her.

“You kidnapped your own sister.””

A flicker of irritation crossed her face.

Only for a moment.

Then she smiled again.

“You still think this is about my sister.””

“What else would it be about?””

Isabella looked at Lily.

And for the first time, her expression changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Recognition.

“You really are special, aren’t you?””

Marcello tightened his grip on Lily’s hand.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

Isabella ignored him.

She looked directly at Lily.

“Tell him.””

Lily hid slightly behind Marcello.

“Tell me what?””

Isabella tilted her head.

“Tell your father what you saw before you came upstairs.””

Marcello looked down at Lily.

The little girl’s face changed.

For the first time that night…

She looked afraid.

“What did you see, Lily?””

She whispered:

“Daddy…”

Her fingers squeezed his hand.

“I saw you.””

Marcello froze.

“What?””

Lily looked toward Isabella.

Then back at him.

“I saw you before tonight.””

A silence fell.

The woman behind him stopped breathing.

Isabella smiled.

And Marcello realized the truth was about to become much bigger than a stolen identity.

May you like

Because whatever Lily had seen…

It involved him.
