Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Buried Twice

Marcello had always believed death was the end of a story.

A person disappeared.

A funeral happened.

A grave was closed.

The world moved on.

That was how life worked.

But the man standing at the end of the hallway was proof that some stories refused to stay buried.

The stranger’s eyes moved across the room.

First to the woman beside Marcello.

Then to Lily.

Then finally to him.

A slow smile appeared.

Not a friendly smile.

A smile that belonged to someone who knew he had all the power.

Marcello stepped in front of his daughter.

“Who are you?””

The man tilted his head.

“You already know.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“I don’t.””

The man’s smile grew.

“Your wife talked about me.””

Marcello felt his chest tighten.

“Don’t say her name.””

The man ignored him.

“She never stopped talking about me.””

The woman beside Marcello moved forward.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

The man looked at her.

“People say that when they want something to be true.””

Her face went pale.

Marcello looked between them.

“You know him.””

She didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Marcello’s eyes narrowed.

“Who is he?””

The woman swallowed.

“His name is Victor.””

The name meant nothing to Marcello.

But the fear behind it meant everything.

“Victor who?””

The man answered himself.

“Victor Bellini.””

Marcello froze.

Not because he knew the name.

Because he had heard it before.

Years ago.

A name Elena had whispered once during an argument.

A name she immediately told him to forget.

At the time, he thought it was a mistake.

A piece of the past she didn’t want to discuss.

Now he wondered if it was the only warning she ever gave him.

Victor stepped into the hallway.

“Your daughter is just like her mother.””

Marcello’s expression hardened.

“Don’t talk about Elena.””

Victor smiled.

“Still protective.””

“You don’t know anything about her.””

“Oh, Marcello.””

Victor laughed softly.

“I knew Elena better than anyone.””

The woman behind him spoke.

“You ruined her life.””

Victor looked at her.

“You still believe that?””

“I know that.””

Victor’s smile faded.

“Your sister always told stories beautifully.””

The word hit Marcello.

“Sister?””

Victor glanced at the woman.

“Didn’t she tell you?””

Marcello looked at her.

“What is he talking about?””

The woman looked trapped.

“I…”

Victor interrupted.

“She’s not Isabella’s sister.””

Silence.

The hallway went completely still.

Marcello turned slowly.

“What?””

The woman closed her eyes.

She knew this moment was coming.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

Marcello’s voice was quiet now.

“You’re going to tell me the truth.””

The woman looked at Lily.

Then at him.

“My name is Clara.””

Marcello stared.

“Clara.””

She nodded.

“Clara Moretti.””

“And Isabella?””

“My twin.””

The answer should have surprised him.

But somehow, after everything tonight, it almost felt expected.

Two faces.

Two identities.

Two lives.

He looked at Victor.

“What does he have to do with both of you?””

Victor smiled.

“Everything.””

Clara looked at him with anger.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Victor shrugged.

“Neither should you.””

Marcello looked at Lily.

She was staring at Victor.

Not with fear.

With recognition.

That terrified him.

“Lily.””

She looked at him.

“Have you seen him before?””

The little girl nodded.

“Where?””

She pointed toward the hallway mirror.

“In Mommy’s memory.””

Marcello’s stomach twisted.

Victor looked interested.

“Her ability has grown.””

Marcello immediately noticed.

“You know about this.””

Victor smiled.

“Of course.””

“How?””

“Because I was there when Elena discovered it.””

Marcello felt rage rising.

“You were there the night she died.””

Victor didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Marcello stepped forward.

“What happened?””

Victor looked at him.

“You really don’t remember?””

“Remember what?””

Victor walked closer.

“You were there too.””

The words hit him like a physical blow.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Victor glanced at Lily.

“Your daughter knows.””

Marcello looked down.

“Lily?””

She looked confused.

Then she whispered:

“Daddy was crying.””

Marcello’s breathing slowed.

Again.

The mirror.

The room.

The memories.

Pieces he had buried.

Pieces he couldn’t reach.

Victor continued.

“Your wife didn’t die because of an accident.””

Marcello stared.

“Stop.””

“She died because she found out what we were doing.””

“Stop.””

“She found the documents.””

Marcello’s face changed.

“What documents?””

Victor smiled.

“The ones Adrian has been trying to recover.””

The room went silent.

Marcello looked toward Clara.

“You knew?””

Clara looked away.

“Some of it.””

“Some?””

“I knew Adrian was involved.””

“But you didn’t tell me?””

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“After Elena died.””

Marcello shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why don’t I remember?””

Clara’s face became painful.

“Because you weren’t ready.””

“What does that mean?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“You asked us to make you forget.””

The words were impossible.

Marcello stared at her.

“No.””

“You did.””

“No.””

“You couldn’t handle what happened.””

His heart pounded.

“What happened?””

Clara looked at Lily.

“Your wife showed you everything.””

The hallway felt like it was closing around him.

“The mirror?””

Clara nodded.

“Everything.””

Victor stepped closer.

“And then you made the biggest mistake of your life.””

Marcello looked at him.

“What?””

“You chose peace over truth.””

A memory flashed.

Not a complete memory.

A fragment.

Rain.

A broken window.

Elena crying.

Someone shouting.

His own voice.

*“I don’t want to remember.””*

Marcello grabbed his head.

A sharp pain moved through him.

Lily immediately held his hand.

“Daddy.””

He looked at her.

“You saw that?””

She nodded.

“I saw Mommy holding you.””

His eyes filled.

“What did she say?””

Lily closed her eyes.

Like she was trying to listen to something far away.

Then she whispered:

“She said…”

A pause.

“She said, ‘If he forgets, protect Lily.’”

Marcello couldn’t breathe.

Victor watched him.

Satisfied.

“Now you understand.””

Marcello looked at him.

“You manipulated my memory.””

Victor smiled.

“Not me.””

He looked toward the staircase.

“Adrian.””

The name filled Marcello with anger.

“What did he do?””

Victor laughed.

“You still think Adrian is the villain.””

“Isn’t he?””

Victor said nothing.

That scared Marcello more.

Because it meant there was something worse.

A sound suddenly came from downstairs.

The ballroom.

People shouting.

A crash.

Then a woman’s scream.

Everyone turned.

Clara whispered:

“She started.””

Marcello looked at her.

“Who?””

Clara’s face went white.

“Isabella.””

A second later, every screen in the mansion turned on.

The television.

The security monitors.

The giant display used for presentations.

All of them showed the same image.

A live feed.

The ballroom.

Hundreds of guests standing frozen.

And in the center of the room was Isabella.

Holding a folder.

Smiling.

She looked directly into the camera.

Directly at Marcello.

Then she spoke.

“Marcello.””

Her voice echoed through the mansion.

“You wanted the truth.””

She opened the folder.

“Now everyone will see it.””

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

A photograph of Marcello.

Elena.

And Victor.

Taken the night Elena died.

Marcello stared.

Because he had never seen that picture before.

Then Isabella revealed the second image.

And his entire world collapsed.

It was a document.

A legal document.

With his signature.

His handwriting.

His name.

And one sentence at the bottom.

*I, Marcello Vitale, agree to erase all memories of the events surrounding Elena Bellini’s death.*

Marcello stopped breathing.

Because he had signed it.

And he had no memory of doing so.

Then Isabella smiled at the camera.

“The truth is coming back.””

The screen went black.

And Lily whispered the words that terrified him most.

“Daddy…”

He looked at her.

“What?””

May you like

She stared at the empty screen.

“She’s going to show them what you forgot.””
