Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Photograph

Marcus didn’t sleep that night.

The photograph stayed on his mind.

Maya standing outside a hospital room.

A date printed in the corner.

Two weeks before their wedding.

He had known Maya for years.

He knew her habits.

Her fears.

The way she cried during sad movies and pretended she didn’t.

But he had never seen that photograph.

At breakfast, he placed his phone on the table.

“Maya.””

She looked up immediately.

The fear in her eyes told him she already knew.

“What happened?””

She stared at the picture.

Then closed her eyes.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“Find out what?””

Maya looked toward the window.

“I went to the hospital before our wedding.””

“Why?””

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“Because of your father.””

Marcus froze.

His father had died years earlier.

The wound was old.

But never completely gone.

“What does my father have to do with this?””

Maya looked back at him.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“Something he left behind.””

Marcus stood.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought it would destroy everything.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

Maya wiped her eyes.

“Your father had a secret.””

The words hung between them.

Marcus stepped back.

“What kind of secret?””

Before Maya could respond, someone knocked on the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

No one was expected.

He walked to the door.

When he opened it, Tara was standing there.

But she wasn’t alone.

Beside her stood an older man Marcus hadn’t seen in years.

His face went pale.

Because he recognized him.

“Marcus,” Tara said quietly.

“This is someone you need to meet.””

The man looked at him with tired eyes.

“I think it’s time you knew why your father really died.””

Marcus couldn’t move.

Maya appeared behind him.

And the stranger looked directly at her.

“You found the documents, didn’t you?””

Marcus turned slowly.

“Documents?””

The man reached into his coat and pulled out an old envelope.

On the front were three words written in his father’s handwriting.

*For Marcus only.*

Marcus took the envelope.

But before he opened it, Tara spoke.

“Be careful.””

Her voice was softer than he had ever heard.

“Because once you read what’s inside…”

She looked at Maya.

“You’ll realize she wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.””

Marcus stared at the envelope in his hands.

Then at his wife.

Then at his sister.

And slowly, he understood.

May you like

The birthday party was never the real beginning of the nightmare.

It was only the moment the door finally opened.
