Chapter 14: The Last Lie

Nobody moved.

Robert looked like he had aged ten years in a few seconds.

Marcus held the letter tightly.

“No.””

Robert shook his head.

“Marcus.””

“Don’t.””

“I can explain.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“That’s what everyone says.””

Robert looked at the floor.

“I never wanted this.””

“You were my father’s friend.””

“Yes.””

“You were there when he died.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“You helped hide everything.””

“I tried to fix it.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“By lying?””

Robert had no answer.

That was enough.

Maya stood beside Marcus.

“Tell him the truth.””

Robert looked at her.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“We understand exactly.””

Robert looked around the room.

At all the faces.

Then he finally gave up pretending.

“Your father found out.””

Marcus waited.

“Found out what?””

“That I was the one who introduced Jonathan to the company.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Robert nodded.

“I didn’t know what Jonathan was capable of.””

“You brought him into our lives.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Robert looked ashamed.

“Money.””

The single word made everyone quiet.

Marcus felt sick.

“All of this…”

He looked around.

“All of this happened because of money?””

Robert shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Marcus.

“It happened because people became afraid.””

Marcus looked at the letter.

“What did my father know?””

Robert sat down.

“Your father discovered Jonathan’s crimes.””

“And?””

“He wanted to expose him.””

“But you stopped him.””

Robert looked away.

“I tried.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You tried?””

Robert’s eyes filled.

“Jonathan threatened my family.””

“And my family?””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Marcus’s voice cracked.

“You watched my life fall apart.””

Robert lowered his head.

“I thought I was protecting everyone.””

Marcus almost smiled.

Another person.

Another excuse.

Another version of the same lie.

Then Maya noticed something.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the letter.

“There’s another page.””

Marcus looked down.

Behind the letter was a folded sheet.

He opened it.

His father’s handwriting appeared again.

This time, the words were shorter.

More urgent.

Marcus, there is one final thing you need to know.

The person who started this never wanted money.

Marcus read the next sentence.

They wanted you.

His heart stopped.

“What?””

Maya looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus continued.

They believed you belonged to them.

The room went silent.

Jonathan stepped closer.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus noticed something.

Fear.

Real fear.

Jonathan whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You know who it is.””

Jonathan didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who?””

Jonathan looked at Robert.

Then at Marcus’s mother.

Then finally at Tara.

“Tara knows.””

Everyone turned.

Tara stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus stared.

“Tara?””

“I don’t know.””

Jonathan laughed softly.

“You always were good at pretending.””

Tara’s face changed.

“Shut up.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Tara started crying.

“I didn’t want this.””

“Want what?””

She covered her face.

“I didn’t want to be part of this.””

Marcus walked toward her.

“Part of what?””

Tara looked at him.

And for the first time in years, she looked like his little sister again.

The scared fourteen-year-old girl who had seen something horrible.

“I was there when your father wrote that letter.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“He knew.””

“Knew what?””

Tara whispered:

“He knew who started everything.””

“Who?””

She looked at him.

“I couldn’t tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because they made me promise.””

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“Who made you promise?””

Tara closed her eyes.

Then said:

“Your father.””

Marcus stared.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

Tara shook her head.

“It does when you know why.””

She looked toward the basement stairs.

“Because the person who destroyed our family…”

A tear rolled down her face.

“Was the person your father spent his whole life protecting.””

Nobody spoke.

Then the basement lights flickered.

Everyone turned.

The door at the top of the stairs slowly opened.

A figure stood there.

An older woman.

Someone Marcus had never seen.

But someone who made his mother go completely still.

“No.””

His mother whispered.

The woman stepped into the light.

And smiled.

“Hello, everyone.””

Marcus looked at his mother.

“Who is that?””

His mother’s face was full of fear.

“She’s the reason everything happened.””

May you like

The woman smiled.

“And I think it’s time Marcus finally met his grandmother.””
