Chapter 12: The Woman Who Held the Final Secret
Marcus couldn’t take his eyes off the photograph.
Tara beside Jonathan.
Not twenty years ago.
Not during childhood.
Last year.
His mind refused to accept it.
He looked at Tara.
“Explain.””
She looked like she couldn’t breathe.
“Marcus…”
“Explain.””
“I can.””
“Then do it.””
Jonathan leaned against the wall.
Enjoying the moment.
Marcus noticed.
He enjoyed watching people break.
That alone told him everything.
Tara looked at Jonathan with disgust.
“You planned this.””
Jonathan smiled.
“You always were the emotional one.””
Marcus turned.
“What is he talking about?””
Tara closed her eyes.
“I met him.””
“When?””
“Last year.””
“Why?””
She looked at him.
“Because I thought he had answers.””
Marcus stared.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I found out something.””
“What?””
Tara looked at Jonathan.
“He wasn’t trying to hurt you.””
Jonathan smiled.
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Tara continued.
“At least not at first.””
Nobody moved.
Jonathan stepped forward.
“Finally.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You expect me to believe you?””
“No.””
Jonathan smiled.
“I expect you to listen.””
Marcus hated that part of him wanted to.
Because after years of lies, even the truth from a monster was still the truth.
Jonathan looked at the birth certificate.
“Your father changed your records because he wanted you to believe you were his son.””
Marcus said nothing.
“He loved you.””
The statement shocked him.
Jonathan continued.
“But he also stole you from me.””
His mother immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Jonathan looked at her.
“You know it’s true.””
Marcus turned.
“Mom?””
She looked away.
The hesitation hurt.
“Tell me.””
She whispered:
“Jonathan was dangerous.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Marcus felt the answer before she said it.
“You left me with him.””
“I thought he had changed.””
Jonathan laughed.
“Everyone thinks that.””
Marcus looked at him.
“So what happened?””
Jonathan’s smile faded.
“Your father found out you weren’t his.””
“And?””
“He changed everything.””
Marcus looked at Robert.
“Is that why the records changed?””
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus felt sick.
His entire identity had been rewritten.
Jonathan continued.
“But your father made one mistake.””
“What?””
“He underestimated your mother.””
His mother looked at Jonathan.
“Stop.””
Jonathan ignored her.
“She kept proof.””
Marcus turned.
“Proof of what?””
His mother’s face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“What?””
She whispered:
“The original records.””
Jonathan smiled.
“Exactly.””
Marcus looked around.
“Where are they?””
Nobody answered.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
He opened it.
A photo appeared.
A wooden box.
Sitting somewhere.
Underneath it was a sentence.
*The truth about Marcus is hidden where the family buried its secrets.*
Marcus looked up.
“What is this?””
Jonathan stared at the phone.
And for the first time, he looked afraid.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus noticed.
“You know where that is.””
Jonathan didn’t answer.
“Where?””
Jonathan looked toward the basement door.
A door Marcus had never paid attention to.
A door that had always remained locked.
His mother whispered:
“No.””
Marcus walked toward it.
“What?””
She grabbed his arm.
“Don’t open that.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because that’s where your father kept everything he didn’t want you to find.””
Marcus looked at the locked basement door.
Then at the key hanging beside it.
A key he had seen before.
The same brass key.
The one Tara used.
The one that started everything.
Marcus slowly reached for it.
And behind him, Jonathan whispered:
“When you open that door…”
May you like
A pause.
“You’ll finally learn why your father was willing to die for you.””
