Chapter 11: The Bloodline Nobody Knew
The message stayed on the screen.
Six words.
Six words that somehow felt heavier than every secret that came before.
*Ask Marcus who he really is.*
Marcus stared at them.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
His mother looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
Marcus noticed.
“You know.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You know something.””
“I know Jonathan liked playing games.””
“That’s not an answer.””
His mother looked at him.
“I don’t know what he meant.””
Marcus looked at Tara.
“What about you?””
Tara shook her head.
“No.””
Robert stepped forward.
“There may be another explanation.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Robert hesitated.
“Jonathan wasn’t only investigating your father.””
“What was he investigating?””
Robert looked at the birth certificate.
“You.””
The room became silent again.
Marcus looked down at the paper.
“My identity.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Robert took a breath.
“Because Jonathan believed your mother had hidden something about your birth.””
Marcus felt numb.
“So even my birth is a secret?””
Nobody responded.
That was the answer.
Maya moved closer.
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
“I need the truth.””
“I know.””
“No more protecting me.””
She nodded.
“No more.””
His mother sat down slowly.
“When you were born, there was a problem.””
Marcus frowned.
“What problem?””
She looked at the birth certificate.
“The hospital records were changed.””
“By who?””
She looked at Robert.
“Your father.””
Marcus felt the room spin.
“Why?””
His mother’s voice became quiet.
“Because Jonathan was trying to claim you.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“He believed you belonged to him.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
She took a deep breath.
“Jonathan and I were together before I met your father.””
Marcus went completely still.
Nobody spoke.
“Your biological father was Jonathan.””
The words finally landed.
Marcus looked at the paper.
Jonathan Vale.
The name he had just learned to hate.
His biological father.
“No.””
His mother reached for him.
He stepped back.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“You’re telling me the man who destroyed my family is my father?””
“Yes.””
Marcus laughed.
But there was no humor.
“This is insane.””
“I know.””
“My entire life…”
He stopped.
Because he didn’t know what sentence could finish that.
His life was no longer a straight line.
It was a collection of lies.
Maya quietly said:
“You are still you.””
Marcus looked at her.
“How?””
“Because a name doesn’t decide who you are.””
He wanted to believe that.
He really did.
But it was hard.
When every name he knew had betrayed him.
A sound came from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
The front door opened.
A man walked inside.
Marcus immediately recognized him.
Not personally.
From the photograph.
Jonathan Vale.
Except he wasn’t dead.
Everyone froze.
Robert whispered:
“No.””
The man smiled.
“Surprised?””
Marcus stared.
“You’re dead.””
Jonathan laughed.
“That was the idea.””
His mother stood.
“You can’t be here.””
Jonathan looked at her.
“Still dramatic after all these years.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled.
“You know exactly who I am.””
“You’re Jonathan Vale.””
“Yes.””
“My father.””
The smile disappeared.
For the first time, Jonathan looked serious.
“Biologically.””
Marcus felt sick.
Jonathan walked farther inside.
“You have questions.””
Marcus clenched his fists.
“I have thousands.””
“Good.””
Jonathan looked around.
“Because I’m tired of everyone telling you half the story.””
Maya stepped between them.
“Stay away from him.””
Jonathan looked amused.
“So this is Maya.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“How do you know her?””
Jonathan smiled.
“I know everyone who has been protecting you.””
Marcus looked at his mother.
Then Tara.
Then Maya.
Jonathan continued:
“Your mother protected you from me.””
A pause.
“Your father protected you from the truth.””
Another pause.
“And Tara…”
He looked at her.
“Tara protected the person who betrayed all of you.””
Everyone turned.
Tara’s face went pale.
Marcus looked at her.
“What does he mean?””
Tara whispered:
“He’s lying.””
Jonathan smiled.
“Am I?””
The room became silent.
Then Jonathan pulled something from his pocket.
A photograph.
He placed it on the table.
Marcus looked at it.
His blood ran cold.
It was a picture of Tara.
Standing beside Jonathan.
May you like
But the date on the back was impossible.
It was taken last year.
