Chapter 7: The Child Who Was Never Supposed To Exist

Nobody reacted at first.

The sentence was too strange.

Too impossible.

Emma wasn’t born into this family by accident.

Maria looked down at the baby sleeping in the officer’s arms.

The same baby she had pulled from the pool.

The same baby whose life had nearly ended hours earlier.

“What are you saying?”” Detective Harris asked.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at Claire.

Not with fear anymore.

With satisfaction.

Like he had finally found a way to hurt her back.

Claire’s face had gone completely pale.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

The warning in her voice was clear.

But he continued.

“Tell them.””

Maria watched Claire carefully.

The woman who had walked into the mansion claiming to be a victim.

The woman who had revealed secrets everyone else wanted buried.

Now she looked terrified of the next truth.

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“Ms. Vale?””

Claire looked at Lucas.

Then at Emma.

Then she closed her eyes.

“Emma…”

Her voice broke.

“Emma was Lily’s twin sister.””

The words hit harder than anything before.

Lucas stared.

“What?””

Maria felt her hand move toward her mouth.

Twin sister.

A baby no one knew existed.

A child connected to the mystery from the beginning.

Detective Harris looked confused.

“Explain.””

Claire took a deep breath.

“When I was pregnant, Daniel wanted everyone to believe there was only one child.””

Rachel frowned.

“Why?””

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Because he was obsessed with controlling everything.””

Daniel scoffed.

“That’s not true.””

Claire ignored him.

“When the doctors told us we were having twins, Daniel was angry.””

Maria looked at him.

“Angry?””

Claire nodded.

“He said one child was enough.””

Lucas looked at his father.

“That makes no sense.””

Claire’s eyes filled with sadness.

“It didn’t make sense to me either.””

She looked at Emma.

“Until I understood that Daniel didn’t see children as people.””

The words hung in the air.

“He saw them as pieces on a board.””

Maria felt a chill.

Detective Harris turned toward Daniel.

“Where was Emma’s birth recorded?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The detective looked at Claire.

“Was there a legal record?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why was none of this public?””

Claire looked down.

“Because Daniel changed it.””

Maria felt anger rising.

Another document.

Another lie.

Another person erased.

“How?”” Maria asked.

Claire looked at her.

“He told everyone Emma was born later.””

Rachel stared.

“You mean…”

“Yes.””

Claire nodded.

“Emma’s birth date was changed.””

Lucas looked at his baby sister.

“So everyone thought she was a different child?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

Maria felt sick.

Emma had spent her entire life surrounded by secrets she never chose.

“Why?”” Detective Harris asked again.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Because Lily was the child he wanted.””

A silence followed.

Maria looked at Lucas.

He looked devastated.

“What does that mean?””

Claire hesitated.

Then Rachel answered.

“Daniel always wanted a perfect family.””

Her voice was bitter.

“When Lily was born, she became his pride.””

Rachel looked at the mansion.

“But when things stopped being perfect, he blamed her.””

Lucas whispered:

“He blamed a child?””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“You’re all twisting things.””

Detective Harris looked at him.

“Then explain.””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time, Maria saw him without control.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man surrounded by evidence.

Then Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“She’s lying about one thing.””

Everyone looked at her.

Vanessa walked forward slowly.

Her face was exhausted.

“But not about Emma.””

Maria watched her.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Emma wasn’t supposed to be with us.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Stop.””

Vanessa continued.

“After Lily disappeared, Daniel needed another child.””

Lucas looked confused.

“Another child?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He wanted to replace what he lost.””

Maria stared.

“Replace Lily?””

Vanessa looked at Emma.

“Yes.””

The baby moved slightly.

Unaware.

Innocent.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought if we raised Emma, maybe we could forget.””

Claire looked at her.

“You knew?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I knew she was Lily’s twin.””

The betrayal on Lucas’s face was heartbreaking.

“You knew all this time?””

Vanessa looked at her son.

“I was scared.””

“You lied to me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

Lucas shook his head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Maria saw Vanessa flinch.

Because the words were true.

A siren passed outside the gate.

More police vehicles arrived.

The investigation was becoming larger.

The mansion that had once represented wealth and perfection now looked like a place full of ghosts.

Detective Harris turned toward Daniel.

“Mr. Vale, we need to ask you about Lily’s medical records.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“You think those records will prove something?””

The detective stared.

“They might.””

Daniel looked toward Claire.

“Ask her where she was when Lily disappeared.””

Claire froze.

Maria noticed.

Again.

That hesitation.

Again.

A secret.

Detective Harris looked at Claire.

“Where were you?””

Claire swallowed.

“I was looking for Lily.””

“When?””

“After Daniel told me she was dead.””

The detective frowned.

“That’s not what I asked.””

Claire looked down.

Maria stepped closer.

“Claire.””

The woman closed her eyes.

“I wasn’t there when Lily disappeared.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“What?””

Claire looked at her.

“I left.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel told me he had taken Lily somewhere safe.””

Maria felt a cold feeling.

“He lied to you?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

Rachel looked devastated.

“You left her alone with him?””

The words hurt.

Claire accepted them.

“Yes.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel smiled.

Not because he was innocent.

Because he had found a weakness.

“You see?””

He looked at Detective Harris.

“She abandoned her own child.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

But before she could answer, Lucas stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel frowned.

“Lucas.””

The boy shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was stronger than before.

“You always do this.””

Daniel stared.

“Do what?””

“Make everyone else look guilty.””

Silence.

Lucas continued.

“You made Maria look guilty.””

He pointed toward Rachel.

“You made Rachel look guilty.””

He looked at Claire.

“You made Mom look guilty.””

Then he looked directly at his father.

“But everyone keeps forgetting one thing.””

His voice shook.

“You were always there.””

Maria felt tears forming.

Lucas had changed.

The frightened boy who had hidden in the pool house was gone.

Daniel stared at him.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

Lucas looked down at Emma.

Then back at him.

“I know you’re not who I thought you were.””

That sentence hurt Daniel more than any accusation.

Then Detective Harris’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

Everyone waited.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He walked several steps away.

Then returned.

“We found something.””

Maria looked at him.

“What?””

The detective looked at Claire.

“Another hospital record.””

Claire went still.

“From where?””

Detective Harris looked at the paper in his hand.

“A private clinic.””

Daniel’s face changed instantly.

Maria noticed.

He knew.

The detective continued.

“The record is for a child matching Lily Vale’s medical history.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Lily?””

Detective Harris shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Emma.

“It’s for Emma.””

Maria’s heart stopped.

“What about Emma?””

The detective looked at the document again.

“The record says Emma wasn’t transferred to the Vale family after birth.””

Nobody understood.

Then he read the final line.

And every person standing there went silent.

“According to this file…”

He looked at Claire.

“Emma was legally adopted.””

Maria stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Detective Harris looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Vale, who are Emma’s biological parents?””

Daniel said nothing.

Then a voice came from behind the police officers.

A voice Maria had never heard before.

“Mine.””

Everyone turned.

A woman stood at the gate.

Older.

Tired.

Holding a folder against her chest.

She looked directly at Emma.

Then at Claire.

“I’ve been searching for my daughter for one year.””

The woman’s hands shook.

“And Daniel Vale stole her from me.””

Maria felt the world shift again.

Because the woman looked at Emma and whispered:

“My baby was taken from the hospital the night she was born.””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A newborn baby.

A hospital bracelet.

And a name.

Not Emma.

A different name.

A name that made Daniel finally lose his composure.

“Get her out of here.””

The woman looked at him.

“No.””

She held up the document.

“Because this time, everyone will know what you did.””

And then she said the name written on the bracelet.

May you like

The name Emma had before Daniel Vale changed her entire life.

“Her name is Lily.””
