Chapter 4: The Witness They Thought Was Gone
Vanessa’s hand slowly lowered from her ear.
Nobody spoke.
The entire driveway seemed frozen around her.
Maria watched the woman’s face carefully.
For the first time since the pool incident, Vanessa wasn’t performing.
No fake tears.
No trembling voice.
No desperate mother act.
Only fear.
Pure fear.
Daniel noticed it too.
“Who was that?”” he demanded.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
And Maria saw something that surprised her.
Vanessa was afraid of Daniel.
Not annoyed.
Not angry.
Afraid.
“It was the hospital,” Vanessa whispered.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What hospital?””
Vanessa looked toward Lucas.
Then away.
Maria felt a heavy silence settle over them.
“What hospital?”” Daniel repeated.
Vanessa swallowed.
“They said someone woke up.””
Daniel’s face went completely blank.
Nobody moved.
Then Rachel whispered:
“No…”
Maria turned toward her.
“You know who?””
Rachel looked like she had just seen a ghost.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel stepped closer to Vanessa.
“Who woke up?””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
But before she could answer, police sirens grew louder.
Red and blue lights reflected against the mansion windows.
The moment had arrived.
The secret they had protected for years was no longer locked inside the house.
It was coming to their front door.
Several officers entered through the main gate.
A tall detective approached, followed by two uniformed officers.
“Daniel Vale?””
Daniel immediately changed his posture.
The powerful businessman returned.
Calm.
Controlled.
“I’m Daniel Vale.””
The detective showed his badge.
“Detective Harris. We received evidence regarding an assault involving a child, attempted false reporting, and possible information related to a previous case.””
Daniel gave a confused smile.
“I’m sorry, detective, but I think there’s been a misunderstanding.””
Maria almost laughed.
A misunderstanding.
That was what he called it.
A baby nearly drowning.
A woman being framed.
A child’s death being questioned.
All a misunderstanding.
Detective Harris looked at Maria.
“Are you Maria Santos?””
“Yes.””
“Are you the employee who rescued Emma Vale from the pool?””
Maria nodded.
“And did Mr. Vale accuse you of pushing the stroller?””
Before Maria could answer, Daniel interrupted.
“My employee was confused. She was under emotional stress.””
Detective Harris looked at him.
“Mr. Vale, I didn’t ask you.””
The smile disappeared from Daniel’s face.
Maria noticed.
Nobody talked to Daniel like that.
Nobody except someone who wasn’t afraid of him.
Detective Harris turned back.
“Maria?””
“Yes.””
“He accused you?””
“Yes.””
“And did he physically strike you?””
A silence followed.
Maria touched her cheek.
She hadn’t thought about it.
Not really.
She had been too focused on proving the truth.
“Yes.””
The detective looked at the officer beside him.
The officer wrote something down.
Daniel stepped forward.
“That was a misunderstanding.””
Detective Harris looked at him.
“Physical contact against someone accused of a crime before an investigation is complete is not usually described that way.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Then a small voice interrupted.
“Dad hit her.””
Everyone turned.
Lucas stood behind Maria.
Daniel stared at him.
“Lucas.””
The boy didn’t look away.
“You hit Maria.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Lucas, don’t.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
“But I saw it.””
Daniel stared at his son.
For a moment, Maria thought he might apologize.
Instead, he said:
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
Lucas wiped his tears.
“I understand more than you think.””
The detective looked at him.
“Lucas, did you find the video evidence?””
Daniel immediately reacted.
“What video?””
Too quickly.
Everyone noticed.
Detective Harris looked toward him.
“Interesting.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Detective, my son is eight years old. He’s confused.””
Lucas stepped forward.
“I’m not confused.””
He pulled out the tablet.
“I recorded everything.””
Maria looked at him.
“What?””
Lucas held the tablet tightly.
“I knew Dad would try to take it away.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“Lucas.””
The boy pressed the screen.
A recording began playing.
His own voice came through.
It was from earlier that evening.
Lucas was hiding near the office door.
The audio was shaky.
But clear.
Daniel’s voice appeared.
“Vanessa, the maid is the perfect person to blame.””
Maria felt everyone’s attention shift.
The detective listened carefully.
The recording continued.
“She has no family here. No money. No influence.””
Vanessa’s voice followed.
“What if she talks?””
Daniel answered:
“Then we make sure nobody believes her.””
The driveway became silent.
Detective Harris looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked at Lucas.
His own son had just destroyed the story he planned to tell.
But Lucas wasn’t finished.
The recording continued.
Then came the words that made everyone freeze.
Daniel’s voice.
“The first time, we were careless.””
Maria felt Rachel grab her arm.
The detective looked at her.
“First time?””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“He’s talking about Lily.””
Daniel immediately moved toward the tablet.
“That recording is manipulated.””
An officer stepped in front of him.
“Please step back.””
Daniel stopped.
But his eyes stayed on Lucas.
Not angry.
Something worse.
Disappointed.
As if Lucas had betrayed him.
Maria saw it.
And it broke her heart.
Because Lucas saw it too.
The boy who had spent his whole life wanting his father’s approval suddenly understood something.
His father didn’t regret hurting people.
He regretted getting caught.
Detective Harris looked at Rachel.
“You mentioned original footage from another incident.””
Rachel held up the flash drive.
“I have it.””
The detective took it.
“Where did you get this?””
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“I copied it before they erased the evidence.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“You really think that’s enough?””
Rachel frowned.
“What?””
“You still don’t understand.””
His voice changed.
Cold.
Confident.
“You think Lily’s case is the only thing that matters.””
Nobody spoke.
Maria felt a chill.
Daniel looked toward the mansion.
Then back at them.
“There are things you don’t know.””
Detective Harris stepped closer.
“Such as?””
Daniel smiled.
Not happily.
Like someone who had been cornered but still believed he had a way out.
“Ask Rachel why she never told anyone what she saw.””
Rachel’s face changed.
Maria looked at her.
“What does he mean?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Daniel continued.
“Ask her why she disappeared for two years.””
The detective looked at Rachel.
“Is that true?””
Rachel looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her silence lasted too long.
Maria’s stomach tightened.
“Rachel?””
Finally, Rachel whispered:
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Daniel?””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone waited.
Then she looked toward the mansion.
“I was afraid because I knew someone else was involved.””
A cold breeze moved through the driveway.
Detective Harris frowned.
“Someone else?””
Rachel nodded.
“The night Lily died, Daniel and Vanessa weren’t alone.””
Maria felt her heartbeat change.
“Who was there?””
Rachel looked at Daniel.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at the mansion.
“There was another person inside the house.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Rachel.””
But she kept going.
“Someone who helped them cover it up.””
Lucas whispered:
“Who?””
Rachel opened her mouth.
Then suddenly, every phone near them buzzed at the same time.
Maria’s phone.
The detective’s phone.
The officers’ phones.
Everyone looked down.
A message had arrived.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
Maria read it slowly.
*You are looking for the wrong person.*
Then another message appeared.
A photo attachment.
The detective opened it first.
His face changed.
“What is it?”” Maria asked.
He turned the screen around.
The picture showed an old newspaper article.
A headline.
A name.
And a photograph of a woman Maria had never seen before.
But Rachel recognized her instantly.
She stepped backward.
“No…”
Maria looked at her.
“Who is she?””
Rachel’s voice barely came out.
“That’s…”
May you like
She covered her mouth.
“That’s Lily’s mother.””
