Chapter 2: The Video That Was Never Meant To Be Found
The first sound from the tablet was not a scream.
It was a whisper.
A calm, familiar voice that made Maria’s entire body go cold.
Daniel.
“Make sure the cameras don’t catch anything useful.””
Maria stared at the screen.
For a second, she couldn’t breathe.
Lucas stood beside her, frozen.
The video showed the backyard from a different angle. It was grainy, recorded from a security camera mounted near the garden wall.
But it was clear enough.
Clear enough to see Daniel standing beside Vanessa.
Clear enough to see the stroller.
Clear enough to see that Maria had nothing to do with what happened.
“Lucas…” Maria whispered.
“Where did you get this?””
The boy didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes stayed locked on the screen.
“I found it in Dad’s office.””
Maria looked at him.
“You were in his office?””
Lucas lowered his head.
“I wasn’t trying to steal anything.””
His voice cracked.
“I heard him and Mom arguing last night.””
The video continued playing.
Daniel’s voice came through again.
“Vanessa, we’ve already talked about this. Panic is what ruins everything.””
Vanessa appeared on screen.
She looked different.
Not like the frightened mother who had cried on the patio.
Not like the woman who had begged Daniel to protect their family.
She looked angry.
“You said the first time would never come back to us,” Vanessa said.
Maria felt a chill.
The first time.
Daniel stepped closer to the camera.
“The first time was handled.””
Lucas suddenly reached for the volume button and turned it down.
Maria looked at him.
“Lucas, what does he mean?””
The boy’s face tightened.
“I don’t know.””
But his expression said he did.
Or at least he knew enough to be afraid.
Outside the pool house, footsteps moved closer.
Maria immediately grabbed Lucas’s arm.
“Turn it off.””
Lucas quickly paused the video.
The footsteps stopped outside the door.
“Lucas?”” Vanessa called.
Her voice was sweet.
Too sweet.
“Are you in there?””
Lucas looked at Maria.
They both stayed silent.
A second later, Daniel spoke.
“Open the door, son.””
Maria’s heart pounded.
Lucas slowly moved toward the tablet.
“What do we do?””
Maria looked at the small window behind him.
The pool house had only one exit.
They were trapped.
Then Lucas whispered:
“There’s another way.””
He pointed toward the bathroom.
“Through the storage room.””
Maria followed him.
Behind a small wooden door was a narrow space filled with old cleaning supplies and garden equipment.
Lucas pushed aside several boxes.
There was a small opening at the back.
A hidden passage.
“You knew about this?””
Lucas nodded.
“Me and Emma found it when we were playing.””
Maria almost smiled at the mention of the baby.
Almost.
Then she remembered Emma’s frightened face.
The little girl she had pulled from the water.
The little girl whose own parents had tried to turn Maria into a criminal.
“Go first,” Maria whispered.
Lucas climbed through.
Maria followed.
They crawled through the dark passage as voices echoed behind them.
The pool house door opened.
“Lucas?”” Daniel called.
Silence.
Then Vanessa’s voice.
“He must have left.””
Daniel sounded irritated.
“No. He was here.””
Maria stopped moving.
She could hear them.
Only a thin wooden wall separated them.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Do you think he saw?””
A pause.
Then Daniel answered.
“If he saw anything, I’ll handle it.””
Maria felt Lucas freeze in front of her.
The boy had heard it too.
Daniel’s footsteps moved away.
Maria waited until the voices disappeared.
Then she continued crawling.
When they finally emerged behind the hedge near the guest parking area, Lucas immediately stood and looked back at the mansion.
His home.
The place where he had grown up.
The place where he had just discovered something terrifying.
“Lucas,” Maria said gently.
He didn’t respond.
“Lucas, look at me.””
Slowly, he turned.
His eyes were full of tears.
“Is my dad a bad person?””
Maria didn’t answer right away.
Because she knew the truth was complicated.
Adults always wanted children to believe the world was simple.
Good people did good things.
Bad people did bad things.
But Maria had spent enough time in the Vale house to know some people wore kindness like a costume.
“I think your dad has done something wrong,” she said carefully.
Lucas wiped his eyes.
“What happened to the first child?””
Maria felt her stomach tighten.
The question from earlier.
The question Daniel tried to stop him from asking.
“Lucas, what do you know?””
He looked down.
“My parents had another baby.””
Maria said nothing.
She had worked for the Vales for almost two years.
She knew about Emma.
She knew about Lucas.
She knew Vanessa had once mentioned a miscarriage years ago.
But she had never heard about another child.
“When?”” Maria asked.
“Before Emma.””
Lucas looked toward the mansion.
“A little girl.””
The night air suddenly felt colder.
“What was her name?””
Lucas swallowed.
“Lily.””
Maria repeated the name quietly.
Lily.
A child no one talked about.
A child who disappeared from family stories.
A child who had a nanny.
A nanny who apparently almost ruined everything.
Maria remembered Vanessa’s words from the video.
“The first nanny almost ruined everything.””
Her skin prickled.
“Lucas, why did your parents say the nanny ruined everything?””
The boy hesitated.
Then he reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I found this with the video.””
Maria opened it carefully.
It was a printed email.
The sender was unknown.
The subject line made her hands go numb.
*Regarding Lily Vale’s death investigation.*
Maria read the first sentence.
I cannot continue lying about what happened in the Vale residence.
She looked at Lucas.
“Where was this?””
“In Dad’s locked drawer.””
“Why were you looking there?””
Lucas looked embarrassed.
“Because Dad took my tablet away yesterday.””
“Why?””
“He said I was asking too many questions.””
Maria looked back at the paper.
The email continued.
The child did not fall by accident. Someone moved the pool gate before the incident occurred.
Maria stopped.
The room seemed to spin.
Lily.
Another child.
Another pool.
Another tragedy.
A sound came from behind them.
A car door closing.
Maria folded the paper quickly.
Someone was approaching.
A black SUV rolled slowly into the driveway.
Not Daniel’s car.
Not Vanessa’s.
A woman stepped out.
She looked older, exhausted, and terrified.
She stared directly at Maria.
Then at Lucas.
Her face changed.
“Oh my God,” she whispered.
Maria stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“My name is Rachel.””
She looked at Lucas.
“I used to take care of Lily.””
Maria’s breath caught.
The first nanny.
Rachel moved closer.
“I’ve been trying to get someone to listen for two years.””
Lucas stepped back.
“What happened to Lily?””
Rachel looked toward the mansion.
Fear crossed her face.
Then she whispered:
“Your parents told everyone she drowned.””
A pause.
“But that’s not what happened.””
Maria felt the world narrow around those words.
Rachel reached into her bag and pulled out an old photograph.
A little girl smiling beside the pool.
Lily.
On the back of the photo was a date.
And underneath it, a handwritten message.
Maria turned the picture over.
The handwriting was shaky.
The message was only one sentence.
*If anything happens to me, Daniel and Vanessa know the truth.*
Before Maria could ask another question, the mansion lights suddenly turned off.
The entire property went dark.
Then a voice came from behind them.
A voice Maria recognized immediately.
Daniel.
“You should have stayed in the pool house.””
Maria turned slowly.
Daniel stood at the edge of the driveway.
But this time, he wasn’t angry.
He was scared.
And in his hand was something that made Rachel’s face lose all color.
A small metal box.
The same kind of box Maria had seen hidden inside his office.
Daniel looked at Lucas.
Then at the photograph.
May you like
Then he said the words that revealed he knew exactly what they had found.
“That box should have been destroyed years ago.””
