Chapter 1: The Day Everything Changed

Maria heard the stroller wheels moving before she understood why.

The sound was wrong.

Too fast.

Too close.

She turned from the outdoor kitchen where she was folding freshly washed towels, and the sight in front of her made every muscle in her body freeze.

The stroller carrying one-year-old Emma was rolling across the marble patio toward the edge of the swimming pool.

For one second, Maria saw Vanessa standing behind it.

Her hand was still on the stroller handle.

Her face was completely calm.

“Vanessa?”” Maria shouted.

The woman did not answer.

The stroller rolled faster.

Maria dropped the towels.

“EMMA!””

The baby looked up from her stuffed rabbit, confused by the sudden movement. Her tiny fingers reached for the air as the stroller crossed the last few feet toward the pool.

Maria ran.

She didn’t think about the consequences.

She didn’t think about her uniform getting soaked.

She didn’t think about Daniel Vale, the wealthy owner of the mansion, getting angry about his expensive patio being ruined.

She only saw a baby about to hit the water.

The stroller tipped forward.

Maria jumped.

The splash echoed through the entire backyard.

Cold water swallowed her.

For a moment, everything disappeared.

The noise.

The sunlight.

The voices.

Then Maria felt something small and trembling against her arm.

Emma.

Maria pushed herself upward, wrapping one arm around the baby and using the other to fight through the water.

When they broke the surface, Emma was crying.

A beautiful sound.

A terrifying sound.

A sound that meant she was alive.

“Oh my God,” Maria whispered, holding her close.

“You’re okay. You’re okay, sweetheart.””

Emma coughed and buried her face against Maria’s shoulder.

Maria carried her toward the pool steps.

That was when Vanessa screamed.

“She threw my baby in the pool!””

The words hit harder than the water.

Maria stopped moving.

“What?””

Vanessa rushed forward, one hand over her mouth, tears already running down her face.

“She pushed the stroller!”” Vanessa shouted.

“I saw her do it!””

Maria stared at her.

The woman she had worked for nearly two years was looking at her like she was a stranger.

“No,” Maria said quietly.

“No, Vanessa. You pushed the stroller.””

Several workers came running from inside the mansion.

The gardener.

The chef.

The security guard.

Everyone looked from Maria, dripping wet and holding Emma, to Vanessa, who was shaking dramatically on the patio.

Then Daniel appeared.

He came through the glass doors wearing a suit jacket, his phone still in his hand.

“What happened?””

Vanessa ran to him.

“Daniel,” she cried.

“Maria tried to kill Emma.””

The world seemed to stop.

Maria looked at Daniel.

“Your wife is lying.””

Daniel’s expression changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Anger.

“You’re saying my wife is lying?””

“She pushed the stroller,” Maria said.

“I saw her.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“She’s blaming me because she knows she almost killed her.””

Daniel stepped closer.

Maria noticed something strange.

He wasn’t looking at Emma.

He wasn’t asking if his daughter was okay.

He was looking only at Maria.

“Give me my daughter,” he said.

Maria carefully handed Emma over.

The moment Emma was in Daniel’s arms, he turned away from Maria.

Then his hand moved.

The slap came so quickly that Maria barely understood what happened.

The sound cracked across the patio.

Her cheek burned.

Everyone went silent.

“GET AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER!”” Daniel shouted.

Maria touched her face.

Her fingers shook.

“Mr. Vale…”

“Don’t.””

His voice was cold.

“You were trusted in this house.””

“I saved her.””

Vanessa stepped closer, her voice trembling.

“She’s trying to make herself look like a hero.””

Maria looked at Vanessa.

A terrible feeling settled in her stomach.

This wasn’t an accident.

This was something else.

Something planned.

“You pushed that stroller,” Maria said.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed for half a second.

Then the sadness returned.

“She’s unstable,” Vanessa told Daniel.

Maria felt the air leave her lungs.

After everything she had done for this family, after staying late when Emma was sick, after holding the baby through nightmares, after missing her own family dinners to help them…

They were going to destroy her.

Daniel looked at the security guards.

“Take her to the pool house.””

Maria blinked.

“What?””

“Until the police arrive, she stays there.””

“You’re locking me up?””

“You are not leaving this property.””

The security guards hesitated.

They knew Maria.

They knew she wasn’t dangerous.

But Daniel Vale was the man who paid their salaries.

One of them stepped forward.

“Maria, please.””

She looked around the patio.

At the workers avoiding her eyes.

At Vanessa holding Emma.

At Daniel standing beside them like he had already decided she was guilty.

Then she saw something.

A small scratch on Vanessa’s hand.

Fresh.

Maria stared at it.

Vanessa noticed.

For a brief moment, her confident expression disappeared.

Then she quickly covered it with her sleeve.

Maria remembered.

When she jumped into the pool, Vanessa had been standing close enough to grab the stroller.

Close enough to stop it.

Close enough to save Emma herself.

But she didn’t.

“Why didn’t you stop it?”” Maria asked.

Nobody answered.

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Take her away.””

The security guard escorted Maria across the backyard toward the small guest house near the pool.

She walked slowly.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was trying to understand.

A person could misunderstand.

A person could panic.

But Daniel had slapped her before hearing the truth.

Vanessa had accused her before asking if Emma was breathing.

They wanted a villain.

And they had chosen her.

The pool house door closed behind her with a heavy click.

Maria sat on the small bed, still wearing her soaked uniform.

Her hands smelled like chlorine.

Her heart felt heavier than the water she had just escaped.

She looked through the window toward the mansion.

Lights were turning on.

People were moving.

A family was pretending their perfect life had not cracked open.

Maria reached for her phone.

No signal.

Of course.

The pool house was too far from the main building.

She tried again.

Nothing.

Then she heard footsteps outside.

Someone stopped near the door.

Maria froze.

A shadow appeared beneath the gap.

She expected Daniel.

Or security.

Instead, a small voice whispered:

“Maria?””

She stood immediately.

“Lucas?””

The door handle moved.

Eight-year-old Lucas Vale stepped inside, holding something against his chest.

His face was pale.

His eyes were wide.

“Lucas, what are you doing here?””

He looked toward the mansion before speaking.

“I heard what Dad said.””

Maria’s stomach tightened.

“What did he say?””

Lucas swallowed.

Then he slowly lifted the object in his hands.

A tablet.

“I found something,” he whispered.

Maria stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Lucas’s fingers trembled as he unlocked the screen.

“My dad told Mom to delete it.””

The room became completely silent.

“Delete what?””

Lucas looked at Maria.

And the fear in his eyes was not the fear of a child who had seen an argument.

It was the fear of a child who had discovered something he was never supposed to know.

“A video,” he said.

Maria stared at the tablet.

“What video?””

Lucas pressed his lips together.

Then he whispered:

“The one that shows what really happened.””

Before Maria could answer, voices suddenly came from outside.

Daniel.

And Vanessa.

They were getting closer.

Lucas looked at the door.

His face changed.

“Maria…”

“What?””

He turned the tablet toward her.

On the screen was a paused video.

A video recorded from a security camera.

And standing beside the stroller before it rolled into the pool was not just Vanessa.

Daniel was there too.

May you like

Then Lucas pressed play.

And the first words that came from the speakers made Maria’s blood run cold.
