Chapter 3: The Secret Buried Beneath The Mansion
For three seconds, nobody moved.
The darkness around the Vale mansion felt heavier than before.
Only the sound of the wind moving through the trees filled the driveway.
Maria stood between Lucas and Rachel, watching Daniel hold the small metal box like it was the most dangerous thing in the world.
Because maybe it was.
“Where did you get that?”” Rachel whispered.
Her voice wasn’t angry.
It was terrified.
Daniel’s eyes moved to her.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Rachel stepped back.
“You told me you buried everything.””
Maria felt Lucas’s hand grab the sleeve of her uniform.
“Maria,” he whispered.
“What does she mean?””
Maria didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.
Because the pieces were falling into place too quickly.
The pool.
The stroller.
The missing child.
The first nanny.
The box.
And now Daniel standing in the dark, looking less like a powerful businessman and more like a man afraid of what was about to come out.
Daniel took one step forward.
“Lucas, go inside.””
The boy didn’t move.
“Lucas.””
“No.””
The single word shocked everyone.
Daniel stared at his son.
“What did you say?””
Lucas lifted his chin, even though his hands were shaking.
“I said no.””
Maria had never seen Lucas challenge his father before.
The boy who usually apologized when he spilled juice.
The boy who carefully watched Daniel’s mood before speaking.
Something had changed.
Daniel noticed too.
His expression hardened.
“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””
Lucas looked at the metal box.
“Is that about Lily?””
Daniel’s face went still.
Just for a moment.
But Maria saw it.
The reaction.
The fear.
Rachel saw it too.
“She knows,” Rachel whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“Who?””
Rachel pointed toward Maria.
“She knows because she found what you tried to hide.””
A cold silence followed.
Then Daniel laughed softly.
Not because something was funny.
Because he was losing control.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
Maria stepped forward.
“No. I know exactly what I’m doing.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I saved Emma.””
Her voice became stronger.
“And you tried to punish me for it.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You think you understand everything because you saw a video?””
“I saw enough.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“You saw one moment.””
His eyes moved between them.
“You don’t know what happened before.””
Rachel shook her head.
“That’s exactly what you always say.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Be quiet.””
The words were quiet.
But threatening.
Maria noticed Rachel’s reaction.
The woman flinched.
Not like someone hearing an insult.
Like someone remembering pain.
Maria stepped closer to Rachel.
“What happened to Lily?””
Daniel immediately answered.
“She drowned.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You were there.””
“Yes,” Rachel said.
Her voice trembled.
“I was there.””
She looked at Lucas.
“And I watched your father lie.””
Lucas went pale.
Daniel pointed toward the mansion.
“This conversation ends now.””
But nobody listened.
Rachel pulled out another photograph from her bag.
This one was older.
A little girl standing beside a pool.
A nanny holding her hand.
Lily.
Maria stared.
“She was happy.””
Rachel nodded.
“She was.””
“What happened?””
Rachel looked at Daniel.
Then Vanessa, who had appeared silently near the mansion entrance.
Nobody had noticed her come outside.
She was no longer crying.
No longer pretending.
Her face was cold.
“Rachel,” Vanessa said.
“You really want to do this?””
Rachel turned.
“Yes.””
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“That’s unfortunate.””
Maria felt a chill.
Because Vanessa didn’t sound guilty.
She sounded annoyed.
Like someone dealing with an inconvenience.
Lucas looked at his mother.
“Mom?””
Vanessa’s expression changed slightly.
“Lucas, go inside.””
“No.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Don’t make this harder.””
Maria looked between Daniel and Vanessa.
They weren’t trying to deny anything anymore.
They were trying to control the damage.
“Tell him,” Rachel said.
Vanessa looked away.
“Tell him what?””
“The truth about Lily.””
A long silence.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Lily was sick.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No, she wasn’t.””
“She had problems.””
“She was a healthy four-year-old.””
Daniel interrupted.
“That’s enough.””
Rachel ignored him.
“She was afraid of the water because your husband forced her into swimming lessons after he decided she was embarrassing him.””
Lucas looked horrified.
Maria glanced at Daniel.
“That’s not true.””
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“You still think you know him?””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“Careful.””
Rachel continued.
“Lily started telling people she was scared of her father.””
Lucas covered his mouth.
Maria felt her chest tighten.
“Who did she tell?””
Rachel looked at her.
“Me.””
The answer was quiet.
“But I didn’t understand how serious it was until the night she died.””
The wind stopped.
Even the trees seemed silent.
Maria swallowed.
“What happened that night?””
Rachel looked down.
“I was supposed to watch Lily while Daniel and Vanessa went to a charity dinner.””
She paused.
“But they came home early.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Rachel.””
“No.””
Her voice became firm.
“You don’t get to scare me anymore.””
She looked at Maria.
“Daniel came into the house angry.””
“Why?””
“Because Lily had broken something.””
Lucas whispered:
“What?””
Rachel looked at him.
“A glass trophy.””
The boy frowned.
“That’s it?””
Rachel nodded.
“That’s it.””
Maria felt sick.
“A child died because of a trophy?””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know exactly what happened after that.””
She looked toward the pool.
“Because Daniel sent me away.””
Maria frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he said Lily was having a tantrum.””
Rachel’s voice broke.
“But ten minutes later, I heard screaming.””
Nobody spoke.
“I ran outside.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“And Lily was in the pool.””
Lucas started crying.
“No…”
Maria immediately put a hand on his shoulder.
Rachel continued.
“Daniel told me it was an accident.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“Then Vanessa told me if I wanted to keep my job, I would agree.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re lying.””
Rachel turned toward her.
“You threatened my family.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Maria noticed.
Rachel reached into her bag again.
“This is why I came back.””
She pulled out a small flash drive.
Daniel’s eyes immediately locked onto it.
“What is that?””
Rachel held it tightly.
“Insurance.””
For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely afraid.
“Give it to me.””
“No.””
“Rachel.””
“You destroyed my life.””
Daniel moved forward.
Maria stepped between them.
“Don’t.””
Daniel stopped.
Not because of Maria.
Because Lucas was watching.
His own son.
The child who had just learned his parents might have lied about his sister’s death.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You don’t understand what’s on that drive.””
Rachel smiled sadly.
“I do.””
She looked at Maria.
“It contains the original security footage from the night Lily died.””
Maria’s heart dropped.
“The original?””
Rachel nodded.
“The footage everyone was told was deleted.””
Vanessa suddenly moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
She lunged toward Rachel.
Maria grabbed her arm.
The two women struggled for a moment.
Vanessa whispered through clenched teeth:
“You should have disappeared with the others.””
Maria froze.
The others?
Before she could ask what that meant, security lights suddenly flashed on around the property.
Several guards appeared.
Daniel had called them.
“Take them inside,” Daniel ordered.
The guards hesitated.
Then Maria noticed something.
They weren’t looking at her.
They were looking at Daniel.
And they looked afraid.
One guard stepped forward slowly.
“Mr. Vale…”
Daniel turned.
“What?””
The guard swallowed.
“There’s a problem.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What problem?””
The guard looked at Lucas.
Then at the flash drive in Rachel’s hand.
“The police are already here.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“How?””
The guard answered quietly:
“Someone sent them the video.””
Maria looked at Lucas.
Lucas looked at his tablet.
Then everyone heard it.
A sound coming from the mansion.
A phone ringing.
Daniel reached into his pocket.
But it wasn’t his phone.
It was Vanessa’s.
She looked down at the screen.
The color drained from her face.
Maria watched her carefully.
Because whatever was on that call…
Vanessa didn’t want anyone else to hear.
Then Vanessa answered.
And after five seconds, she whispered the words that made Daniel turn toward her in horror.
“Impossible.””
A pause.
Her hand began shaking.
“The first nanny…”
May you like
She looked at Rachel.
“…she wasn’t the only witness.””
