Chapter 9: The Truth Vanessa Was Afraid Of
Vanessa stood in the doorway holding my daughter’s records like they were a weapon.
That was the moment I stopped seeing her as my sister.
Because a sister protects what you love.
She doesn’t use it against you.
“What are those?”” I asked.
Vanessa’s grip tightened.
“Things you should have known.””
I stared at her.
“You had eight years to tell me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
For a second, I almost remembered the girl she used to be.
The girl who shared a bedroom with me.
The girl who cried when our father died.
The girl who promised we would always be family.
Then I remembered the wedding.
The humiliation.
The lies.
The flash drive.
The way she looked at Lily.
And the feeling disappeared.
“You don’t get to pretend you’re helping me.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You made choices.””
Graham stepped forward.
“What is in that folder?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Things that explain everything.””
“Then explain.””
She swallowed.
“My mother told you about the DNA test?””
I looked at my mother.
She looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Then you know your father was investigating.””
“Investigating what?””
She opened the folder.
“Your real family history.””
My stomach tightened.
I hated those words.
Real family.
As if love could suddenly become fake because biology was complicated.
“My father was my father.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He was.””
The answer surprised me.
She continued.
“Your dad knew that. He wasn’t looking for a reason to stop loving you.””
“Then what was he looking for?””
She looked at the papers.
“The person who changed your records.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Because whoever did it wanted to hide something.””
“Like what?””
She looked at Lily’s name.
“Like why you were chosen.””
The words made my skin crawl.
Chosen?
My daughter stepped into the room.
“Mom?””
I immediately turned.
“Lily, go upstairs.””
“No.””
Her voice was small.
But firm.
“I want to know.””
My heart broke.
“Sweetheart—”
“I’m tired of people talking about me like I’m not here.””
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
Eight years old.
And somehow wiser than all of us.
I walked to her.
“You don’t have to hear this.””
“Yes, I do.””
I looked at Graham.
Then at my mother.
Then Vanessa.
Everyone had made decisions about my daughter.
Now she deserved a voice.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa looked miserable.
“Your father discovered Daniel wasn’t the first person interested in your family’s money.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Daniel was hired.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He didn’t meet you by accident.””
My knees almost gave out.
“No.””
“He was looking for you.””
“For money?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
I looked at my mother.
She closed her eyes.
“How long did you know?””
My mother whispered:
“Not long enough.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That doesn’t even make sense.””
Vanessa opened the folder.
Inside was a contract.
A contract between Daniel and someone else.
I read the name.
And my heart stopped.
Because it wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t my mother.
It wasn’t anyone I expected.
It was a company.
A company owned by a man whose name I recognized.
My father’s former business partner.
A man who had attended my father’s funeral.
A man who had hugged me and told me:
“Your father loved you more than anything.””
I looked up.
“Richard Hale.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He was the one pulling the strings.””
Graham looked confused.
“Who is Richard Hale?””
“My father’s closest friend.””
The room felt colder.
“He was family.””
Vanessa whispered:
“That’s why your father never suspected him.””
I looked at Lily.
At my daughter.
At the folder.
At the years stolen from us.
Then I saw one more document.
A payment record.
A transfer made after my divorce.
Recipient:
*Vanessa Carter.*
Amount:
$500,000.
My sister saw me reading it.
Her face collapsed.
“Emily…”
I looked at her.
“You were paid.””
“No.””
“You took half a million dollars.””
“I didn’t know what it was for.””
I laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
She cried.
“I thought it was compensation.””
“For what?””
Her answer was barely a whisper.
“For helping Daniel get close to you.””
The room went completely silent.
I felt like I had been hit.
My own sister.
My own sister helped bring the man who destroyed my life into it.
But then Vanessa said something that made me stop.
Something I never expected.
“I wasn’t the one who chose you.””
I stared.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“Richard didn’t want Daniel to marry you.””
“Then what did he want?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
“He wanted Daniel to have a child with you.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
And then she said the sentence that changed everything:
“Because your daughter was never supposed to inherit your father’s fortune.””
May you like
A pause.
“She was supposed to unlock it.””
