Chapter 12: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave
Nobody touched the folder.
Not immediately.
It sat on the table between us like a bomb.
Richard watched us.
Waiting.
He wanted us to open it.
That scared me more than if he had hidden it.
People who had nothing to lose didn’t offer evidence.
They destroyed it.
“Why give this to me?”” I asked.
Richard looked at me.
“Because your father wanted you to have it.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
A pause.
“I expect you to read it.””
Graham stepped beside me.
“Emily, be careful.””
I nodded.
I knew.
Every document.
Every conversation.
Every person in my life had become a trap.
But this was different.
This was from my father.
And despite everything, I still trusted him.
I opened the folder.
The first page was a legal document.
The second was a letter.
The third was a photograph.
A photograph that made me stop.
It was my father.
Holding a baby.
My baby.
Lily.
But the date was wrong.
Impossible.
The photo was taken before Lily was born.
I looked at Richard.
“What is this?””
He didn’t answer.
I turned the page.
A note.
My father’s handwriting.
*Emily, if you are seeing this, then the truth about Lily has finally reached you.*
My hands shook.
*There is something I never told you. Something I hid because I wanted you to have a normal life.*
I swallowed.
I continued reading.
*Lily was born after a medical complication during pregnancy. Doctors told me there were risks. They told us the baby might not survive.*
I looked at Lily.
She was watching me.
Quietly.
*But the most important thing they told me was that someone had accessed confidential information about the pregnancy.*
My heart raced.
Someone had been watching before Lily was even born.
I read faster.
*I discovered Richard was not the only person involved.*
I stopped.
Not the only person.
Then who else?
The next line made my blood freeze.
*Daniel was not the first person who tried to get close to Emily.*
I looked at Richard.
He looked serious now.
No smile.
No confidence.
Only regret.
I kept reading.
*Someone had been watching our family long before Emily met Daniel. Someone who knew about the trust. Someone who knew Lily would be the key.*
I turned the page.
A name.
A name my father had circled.
My hands went numb.
Because I knew it.
Everyone knew it.
The person who had been beside me my entire life.
My mother.
I looked up.
Richard spoke quietly.
“She wasn’t working alone.””
My voice barely came out.
“Who was she working with?””
Richard didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Because the door behind us opened.
Everyone turned.
A man walked inside.
A man I had never expected to see.
Daniel.
But he wasn’t alone.
My mother was beside him.
My body went cold.
“Mom?””
She looked devastated.
“Emily…”
I stepped back.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I tried to stop this.””
I laughed.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“You destroyed my marriage.””
“I know.””
“You abandoned your daughter.””
His face changed.
“I know.””
“Then why are you here?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Shame.
“I’m here because I know who really started this.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“That’s enough.””
Daniel looked at him.
“No.””
A silence fell.
Because Daniel was no longer afraid of Richard.
And that meant something.
Something had changed.
Daniel turned to me.
“Emily, I need you to understand.””
“I don’t need anything from you.””
“You do.””
“No.””
“You do.””
His voice cracked.
“Because the person who planned all of this was never Vanessa.””
I looked at my sister.
She looked away.
Daniel continued.
“It wasn’t Richard either.””
Everyone froze.
Richard looked genuinely confused.
Then Daniel said the words that changed everything:
“The person who created this entire plan was the one person nobody ever questioned.””
He looked at my mother.
My mother closed her eyes.
And whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
The room went silent.
Because for the first time...
May you like
My mother wasn’t hiding the truth.
She was admitting it.
