Chapter 3: The Part They Never Wanted Me To Know
The video stopped.
Not because it ended.
Because someone had disconnected the power.
The screen went black.
Everyone turned.
A man stood near the back entrance.
A man I hadn’t seen in years.
Daniel.
My ex-husband.
For a second, nobody moved.
Then Lily grabbed my hand.
“Mom.””
I squeezed her fingers.
“I’m here.””
Daniel looked older.
Not older in years.
Older in guilt.
His eyes moved across the room.
They landed on Vanessa.
Then on me.
Then on Lily.
“I can explain.””
I almost couldn’t believe those were the first words he chose.
After everything.
After abandoning us.
After hiding behind lawyers and excuses.
“I can explain.””
I stepped forward.
“Can you?””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Then explain.””
The entire ballroom watched.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
Good.
For years, I had been the one uncomfortable.
The one answering questions.
The one explaining why my daughter didn’t have a father at school events.
The one pretending I wasn’t hurt.
He lowered his voice.
“Not here.””
I laughed softly.
“You’re right.””
I looked around.
“At your sister-in-law’s wedding, surrounded by everyone who helped you hide the truth?””
Vanessa stepped between us.
“Stop.””
I looked at her.
“You don’t get to tell me when to stop.””
She flinched.
That was new.
For once, she wasn’t controlling the room.
Graham stood near the stage.
His face was empty.
“Daniel.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Graham, listen—”
“No.””
Graham shook his head.
“You don’t get to explain anything until I understand why my wedding turned into this.””
Daniel looked down.
And that was when I noticed something.
He wasn’t shocked by the video.
He wasn’t angry.
He was afraid.
“What else is on that drive?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
My mother suddenly moved.
“Enough.””
I turned.
“Enough?””
She looked exhausted.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
I stared at her.
“No. I think I finally do.””
She stepped closer.
“You think this is about cheating.””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“It’s bigger.””
The room changed.
Even Vanessa looked surprised.
“Mom.””
My mother ignored her.
She looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“The reason he left wasn’t because he loved Vanessa.””
My heart pounded.
“Then why?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Don’t.””
My mother continued.
“He left because of the money.””
Nobody spoke.
I felt confused.
“What money?””
Daniel looked furious.
“Stop talking.””
My mother’s hands shook.
“Your father’s life insurance.””
I froze.
My father had died three years before my divorce.
The money had been placed into an account because it was supposed to help support me and Lily.
I remembered Daniel saying we should “handle finances together.””
I remembered trusting him.
I remembered signing papers without reading every page because I was exhausted.
My voice came out quietly.
“What did he do?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily whispered:
“Mom?””
I turned.
She was holding something.
A small envelope.
My stomach dropped.
“Where did you get that?””
She looked toward Daniel.
“He gave it to me.””
Daniel went pale.
“What?””
Lily opened the envelope.
“I found it in Grandpa’s old computer bag.””
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
My hands started shaking before I even touched it.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
My father’s handwriting.
The letter was addressed to me.
But there was one problem.
I had never seen it before.
I opened it.
The first line made my knees weak.
*Dear Emily, if you are reading this, then Daniel has already tried to take what was never his.*
The room disappeared.
The wedding disappeared.
All I could see were those words.
My father knew.
Somehow, my father knew.
I kept reading.
The letter explained that shortly before his death, he had discovered unusual withdrawals from the family account.
Withdrawals Daniel claimed were mistakes.
But they weren’t mistakes.
They were preparation.
My father had hired someone to investigate.
And he had hidden proof.
Proof that Daniel and Vanessa had been planning something long before my divorce.
I looked up.
Vanessa was crying now.
Not because she was sorry.
Because she was caught.
“Where is the rest of the letter?”” Daniel asked.
His voice was shaking.
I looked at him.
“You know there’s more.””
He said nothing.
And that told me everything.
I folded the letter.
“Lily.””
She stepped closer.
“Where did you find the flash drive?””
She looked at the envelope.
“There was another note inside.””
My breath caught.
“What note?””
She reached into her pocket.
A tiny piece of paper.
She handed it to me.
I unfolded it.
Only one sentence was written.
A sentence that changed everything.
*The video is only the beginning. The person who betrayed you most is not the one you think.*
I looked around the ballroom.
At Daniel.
At Vanessa.
At my mother.
Then my eyes stopped on the one person who had been silent the entire night.
The person who had known where everything was hidden.
The person who had moved us to the back table.
The person who had laughed when my daughter was treated like she didn’t belong.
My mother.
And suddenly I realized…
The wedding scandal wasn’t the secret.
It was the distraction.
May you like
Because someone had wanted me to find that flash drive.
And whoever placed it where Lily could discover it knew exactly what would happen next.
