Chapter 7: The Name Written in My Father’s File

My name was written at the bottom of the page.

Not as a signature.

Not as a warning.

As a question.

*Emily.*

I stared at the single word until the letters blurred.

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The basement disappeared.

The hidden office disappeared.

All I could see was that name.

My name.

Written in my father’s handwriting.

Lily noticed immediately.

“Mom?””

I quickly folded the paper.

“Nothing.””

She looked at me.

She had my eyes.

My father’s ability to notice everything.

“Are you sure?””

I hated that she had learned to question adults.

I hated that the world had forced her to become cautious.

I knelt beside her.

“I’m okay.””

She tilted her head.

“You always say that when you’re not.””

A small, sad smile appeared on my face.

“You’re getting too smart.””

“No,” she whispered.

“I’m just paying attention.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because that was exactly what my father had done.

He paid attention.

He saw things everyone else ignored.

And now I needed to know why he had written my name in a file connected to my daughter.

I unfolded the letter again.

The handwriting was Daniel’s.

But the note at the bottom was my father’s.

*Emily must know the truth when she is ready.*

Ready for what?

The question made my stomach twist.

I grabbed the folder and looked through every page.

Bank records.

Emails.

Photos.

Documents about Daniel.

Documents about Vanessa.

Then I found something else.

A medical report.

At first, I thought it was unrelated.

Until I saw Lily’s name.

My heart stopped.

I read the first line.

*Patient: Lily Carter.*

I dropped the paper.

No.

No.

No.

I picked it up again, hoping I had misunderstood.

But there it was.

My daughter’s name.

A medical file.

A date.

A hospital I recognized.

The hospital where Lily was born.

I felt the room spinning.

“Mom?””

I looked at her.

I forced my voice to stay calm.

“Sweetheart, I need you to wait upstairs for a minute.””

“Why?””

“Because I need to read something.””

She looked scared.

“Is it about me?””

I hated that she asked.

I hated that she already expected bad news.

I took her hand.

“It’s not your fault.””

She nodded.

But she didn’t move.

“Mom.””

“Yes?””

“Did I do something wrong?””

The question broke something inside me.

I pulled her close.

“Never.””

I held her for a long time.

Because suddenly I was afraid.

Not of Daniel.

Not of Vanessa.

Of a truth I couldn’t imagine.

After Lily went upstairs, I sat alone in the hidden room.

I read the report.

Then I read it again.

The file was not about an illness.

It was about a DNA test.

A paternity test.

My hands went numb.

I turned the page.

There was a note attached.

*Daniel requested the test.*

Requested.

Not me.

Not my father.

Daniel.

Why?

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned quickly.

Graham stood in the doorway.

I almost screamed.

“How did you find me?””

He looked exhausted.

“Your mother called me.””

Of course she did.

Even now, she was controlling who knew what.

“What do you want?””

“To help.””

I laughed.

“Everyone says that right before they make things worse.””

He accepted the insult.

“I deserve that.””

He looked around the room.

“What is this place?””

“My father’s secret office.””

His eyes moved across the files.

Then he saw the folder in my hand.

“What happened?””

I didn’t answer.

He noticed my expression.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“Did Vanessa ever talk about Daniel’s plan?””

His face changed.

“What plan?””

I studied him.

“I don’t know if I can trust you.””

He nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“I married a woman who lied to me.””

A pause.

“I know what it feels like when the person you trusted becomes someone you don’t recognize.””

That was the first honest thing anyone had said to me in days.

I showed him the DNA report.

His eyes widened.

“What is that?””

“I don’t know.””

He read the page.

Then looked at me.

“Emily…”

“What?””

“This isn’t Daniel’s signature.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The request form.””

He pointed.

“I work in finance. I see signatures all day. This isn’t his.””

I took the paper.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

My heart raced.

Someone forged Daniel’s request.

Someone wanted this test.

Someone wanted this secret.

But why?

I looked through the remaining pages.

Then I found the result.

I expected the worst.

I expected some impossible truth.

Something that would destroy everything I knew.

But the result said:

*Daniel Carter is the biological father of Lily Carter.*

I exhaled.

For a second, relief came.

Then confusion.

If Daniel was Lily’s father…

Why hide the test?

Why create the secret?

Graham looked at the result.

“So?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Then I saw the second page.

The page behind the result.

The page that had been folded.

The page nobody wanted me to see.

It wasn’t about Daniel.

It was about someone else.

A second DNA comparison.

A second name.

A second person.

And when I saw it, I felt the entire world shift.

Because the second person was not a stranger.

May you like

It was someone I had trusted my entire life.

My father.
