Chapter 9: The Memory They Stole From Me

The words echoed in my mind.

*Because someone made sure you would never remember.*

I looked at Julian.

He looked like a man watching a door close forever.

For twelve years, he had carried secrets.

For twelve years, I had lived inside a story someone else wrote for me.

And now, standing in that hospital room with my newborn son in my arms, I finally understood something.

My memory was not lost.

It was taken.

“Who?””

My voice trembled.

“Who made me forget?””

Nobody answered.

The older man looked at Julian.

And that was enough.

My heart sank.

“No.””

Julian immediately shook his head.

“Vivian, listen to me.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I have listened to you for twelve years.””

My voice cracked.

“I listened when you told me we met by chance.””

Silence.

“I listened when you said you saved me.””

Julian’s face tightened.

“I did save you.””

I stared at him.

“Did you?””

The question hurt him.

But it needed to be asked.

Because I was no longer the woman who didn’t remember.

I was the woman who had finally started to.

The older man stepped forward.

“My name is Richard Cole.””

His eyes moved to the baby.

“I am Adrian’s father.””

I looked at the man who had just entered my life carrying pieces of my stolen past.

“What happened to me?””

Richard’s expression became heavy.

“Twelve years ago, after the accident, you were brought to this hospital.””

I looked at Dr. Harris.

He nodded slowly.

“I was here.””

Richard continued.

“You were alive, but injured.””

“What kind of injury?””

“A head injury.””

I swallowed.

“Memory loss.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Julian.

“But that happened naturally.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

The room went silent.

“No?””

He looked at me.

“The accident caused confusion. But the person who treated you afterward made sure you stayed confused.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Richard looked at Julian.

Again.

I didn’t need anyone to say it.

But I needed to hear it.

“Julian?””

His eyes filled.

“Vivian…”

“Say it.””

He looked broken.

“I didn’t erase your memory.””

Richard interrupted.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Not directly.””

The words made my blood run cold.

“Then what did he do?””

Richard sighed.

“He isolated you.””

My breathing slowed.

“What?””

“He took you away from everyone who knew your past.””

I looked at Julian.

“You moved me.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Another city.””

“Why?””

His voice cracked.

“Because I thought if you stayed, you would remember.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“You didn’t want to help me.””

Julian looked at me.

“I wanted a chance.””

“A chance at what?””

He couldn’t answer.

“A life with someone who didn’t know you had stolen her from another man?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I loved you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word came quietly.

But firmly.

“You loved the version of me that couldn’t accuse you.””

Julian looked like I had hit him.

But he didn’t deny it.

That hurt more.

Richard continued.

“After Adrian died, Julian told everyone you had disappeared.””

I looked at him.

“But I didn’t.””

“No.””

“You knew where I was.””

“Yes.””

“And Adrian?””

Richard looked down.

“Adrian died believing you left him.””

My chest tightened.

A pain deeper than anger.

Because somewhere inside me, I was mourning a man I had loved.

A man my mind forgot.

But my heart somehow remembered.

Dr. Harris walked closer.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The day you arrived here twelve years ago, you were pregnant.””

The room froze.

I stared.

“What?””

Dr. Harris looked at my baby.

“Your son was not your first child.””

The words didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

Then everything around me disappeared.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Richard’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Vivian.””

I looked at him.

“You had a baby before.””

My knees weakened.

I sat down.

“No.””

Julian stepped forward.

“Vivian, please.””

I looked at him.

And suddenly I hated that he was the one standing closest to me.

Because he knew.

He knew everything.

“You knew.””

His face collapsed.

“Yes.””

The room spun.

“You knew I had another child?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

Julian covered his face.

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid?””

My voice rose.

“You let me believe I had no past.””

“I thought remembering would destroy you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You thought remembering would destroy you.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard opened the small wooden box again.

Inside was another photograph.

He handed it to me.

My hands shook as I took it.

A baby.

Tiny.

Sleeping.

Wrapped in a white blanket.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

Twelve years ago.

And a name.

*Emma.*

My vision blurred.

“Emma?””

Richard nodded.

“Your daughter.””

The room became silent.

I stared at the picture.

A child I had never held.

A child I had forgotten.

A child who had existed.

“I don’t understand.””

Richard sat down.

“After the accident, you gave birth.””

I looked at my son.

Then back at the picture.

“What happened?””

Dr. Harris looked away.

And I knew.

The answer was painful.

“She died.””

The words destroyed me.

I covered my mouth.

A cry escaped.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just broken.

Because suddenly I wasn’t only grieving Adrian.

I was grieving a little girl I had never known.

My daughter.

Julian started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

And something inside me snapped.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“Don’t apologize for this.””

“Vivian—”

“You took my memories.””

“No.””

“You took my choice.””

He looked down.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You don’t get to call it protection.””

My voice shook.

“You stole twelve years from me.””

Silence.

Then Richard spoke.

“There is one thing Julian doesn’t know.””

Everyone turned.

Julian looked confused.

“What?””

Richard reached into the box again.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“This was found with Emma’s hospital records.””

My heart stopped.

“Why didn’t I see it?””

“Because it was hidden.””

“By who?””

Richard looked at Julian.

Julian stepped back.

“No.””

The room went silent.

Richard opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Not from Adrian.

From me.

My hands shook as I held it.

“My handwriting?””

Richard nodded.

“You wrote this twelve years ago.””

I opened it.

The first line made my entire body freeze.

*If something happens to me, please protect my children from Julian Vance.*

I stopped breathing.

The letter continued.

*I know what he did. I know he thinks I don’t remember. But I remember enough.*

My fingers trembled.

I looked up.

Julian’s face had turned completely white.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what I was about to read.

I continued.

*Adrian was right. Julian was never trying to save me. He was trying to keep me quiet.*

The room went silent.

Then I read the final sentence.

The sentence that explained everything.

*The night before my accident, I discovered Julian was not just hiding the truth about Adrian. He was hiding the truth about Emma.*

I looked at Julian.

“What did you do?””

He didn’t answer.

Richard stepped closer.

And whispered:

“The accident was not the beginning of the betrayal.””

A pause.

“It was the end of Julian trying to control the truth.””

Julian finally spoke.

His voice was broken.

“I never meant for anyone to get hurt.””

I stared at him.

“Then why did my daughter die?””

His face collapsed.

And after twelve years of silence…

May you like

Julian finally confessed.

“Because Emma was never supposed to survive.””
