Chapter 8: The Child Adrian Left Behind
I stared at the photograph.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
The world around me became distant—the sound of machines, the footsteps outside the room, the quiet conversations in the hallway.
Everything disappeared.
There was only that picture.
A little girl.
Maybe six or seven years old.
Dark hair.
Bright eyes.
And a face that carried something painfully familiar.
Adrian.
My hands began shaking.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Eleanor watched me carefully.
“You see it too.””
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Her expression remained unreadable.
“Her name is Lily.””
My throat tightened.
“Who is she?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan stepped forward.
His face had lost all color.
“Where did you get that?””
Eleanor looked at him.
“So you knew.””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“I asked you a question.””
She smiled faintly.
“The same way Adrian asked questions before he died.””
A cold feeling moved through the room.
I looked at Ethan.
“You knew about her?””
He didn’t answer.
That hurt more than if he had lied.
“Ethan.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“How?””
He looked at the photograph.
“Because Lily is Adrian’s daughter.””
The words landed harder than anything else.
I looked at my son.
Then at the little girl in the picture.
Another child.
Another piece of Adrian’s life.
A child I had never known existed.
My mind struggled to understand.
“But I was his fiancée.””
Ethan looked at me sadly.
“I know.””
“Then how?””
He hesitated.
“She was born before you and Adrian met.””
I felt a strange wave of relief.
Not because the situation was simple.
It wasn’t.
But because for one terrifying second, I thought Adrian had betrayed me.
Ethan continued.
“Adrian found out about Lily after she was born.””
“Who is her mother?””
Nobody answered.
Again.
Another secret.
I was exhausted from secrets.
“Tell me.””
Ethan looked at Eleanor.
Then at Julian.
Finally, he said:
“Her mother was Sarah.””
The name meant nothing.
Until Julian reacted.
His face changed.
And I noticed.
“You know her.””
Julian looked away.
“Julian.””
He swallowed.
“Sarah was someone Adrian knew.””
“Someone?””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Don’t make it sound innocent.””
Julian’s eyes hardened.
“Be careful.””
“Why?””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Afraid I’ll tell her everything?””
The tension between them filled the room.
I looked at Dr. Harris.
“What is happening?””
He sighed.
“Sarah was involved with Adrian years before he met you.””
I nodded slowly.
“And Lily?””
“Adrian didn’t know about her until later.””
Ethan looked at me.
“But when he found out, he took responsibility.””
My eyes moved to the photograph again.
“That sounds like Adrian.””
A painful silence followed.
Because even without remembering him, I knew.
Somewhere deep inside me, I knew.
Ethan continued.
“Adrian wanted to bring Lily into his life.””
“Why didn’t he?””
His expression darkened.
“Because Sarah disappeared.””
“Why?””
Ethan looked at Julian.
And suddenly I understood.
This story always came back to him.
“Julian?””
He didn’t speak.
I felt anger rising.
“Tell me.””
Finally, he said:
“Sarah worked for my father’s company.””
“And?””
“She knew things.””
“What things?””
Julian looked at the floor.
“Things Adrian wanted to expose.””
The room became silent.
Ethan nodded.
“Sarah had documents too.””
My heart sank.
“The evidence.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Lily’s photograph.
“And she disappeared?””
Ethan nodded.
“After Adrian died.””
The pieces started connecting.
Adrian.
The evidence.
The accident.
The children.
The secrets.
But one question remained.
“Why didn’t Adrian tell me about Lily?””
Ethan looked at me.
“He tried.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“He wrote about her.””
He looked at the letter.
“After he discovered Lily existed, he wanted to tell you. He wanted you to meet her.””
A sadness filled my chest.
“Then why didn’t he?””
Ethan’s voice softened.
“Because he died before he could.””
I looked away.
A man I couldn’t remember had spent his final moments trying to protect people he loved.
And I had spent twelve years living a life built on someone else’s lie.
My baby began crying softly.
Instantly, I focused on him.
I held him closer.
“It’s okay.””
I whispered.
“I’m here.””
The room watched me.
Then Eleanor spoke.
“You don’t understand the danger.””
I looked at her.
“What danger?””
She pointed toward the photograph.
“Lily disappeared for twelve years.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
She didn’t answer.
Because I already knew.
She wasn’t trying to help me.
She was trying to scare me.
“What do you want?””
Eleanor’s expression changed.
“Your son needs protection.””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
She looked surprised.
“No?””
“You don’t get to talk about protecting my child.””
My voice became stronger.
“Not after everything.””
Julian stepped forward.
“Vivian—”
I turned toward him.
“No.””
He stopped.
“You don’t get to be the father now.””
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I didn’t care.
Because for months, I had carried the weight alone.
He didn’t get to choose when he became responsible.
A sudden noise came from the hallway.
A loud argument.
Then a nurse rushed inside.
“Dr. Harris.””
Everyone turned.
“There’s someone asking about the baby.””
My body tensed.
“Who?””
The nurse looked frightened.
“He says his name is Daniel Cole.””
Ethan froze.
“Daniel?””
Dr. Harris stood.
“That’s impossible.””
I looked between them.
“Who is Daniel Cole?””
Ethan’s face changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Adrian’s father.””
The room went silent.
“Adrian’s father is alive?””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“He wasn’t supposed to be.””
A chill moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked toward the door.
“Because twelve years ago, everyone believed he died.””
I stared.
“But he didn’t?””
“No.””
The hallway outside became quiet.
Then footsteps approached.
Slow.
Heavy.
The kind of footsteps that made everyone instinctively stop talking.
The door handle moved.
Julian whispered:
“No.””
The door opened.
An older man stood there.
His eyes immediately found my son.
Then me.
And I knew.
Before anyone said his name.
I knew.
Because he looked at the photograph of Adrian and me like he was seeing a ghost.
“Vivian.””
My heart pounded.
“How do you know my name?””
The old man’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I spent twelve years believing you were dead.””
Nobody moved.
Then he looked at Julian.
And his expression turned cold.
“You lied to her.””
Julian stepped back.
The man looked at my baby.
And whispered:
“My son’s child.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Then he reached into his coat and pulled out a small box.
An old wooden box.
Worn from years of being carried.
“I kept this for Adrian.””
He looked at me.
“But I was never able to give it to him.””
My voice shook.
“What is it?””
The man opened the box.
Inside was a ring.
Adrian’s ring.
And beneath it…
A hospital bracelet.
My hospital bracelet.
From twelve years ago.
I stared at it.
Because printed on the faded plastic were words that made my entire body freeze.
*Baby: Unknown.*
*Mother: Vivian Carter.*
And underneath those words was a handwritten note.
A note I had never seen.
A note that explained why I lost twelve years of my life.
The old man looked at me.
“Your memory wasn’t lost because of the accident.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why?””
He looked at Julian.
May you like
And whispered:
“Because someone made sure you would never remember.””
