Chapter 7: The Child They Tried to Hide

The room went silent.

Not the peaceful silence of a sleeping baby.

The kind of silence that comes right before something breaks.

I looked at Dr. Harris.

Then at my son.

Then back at him.

“What did you just say?””

My voice barely sounded like mine.

Dr. Harris looked devastated.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No more apologies.””

I held my baby closer.

“No more people saying they’re sorry after they’ve already taken my choices away.””

Dr. Harris lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.””

The fact that he admitted it made my anger burn hotter.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Everyone watched him.

Julian.

Eleanor.

Ethan.

All of them carrying pieces of a story I had somehow been removed from.

Dr. Harris took a slow breath.

“Your son carries Adrian Cole’s DNA.””

My heart stopped.

The words were simple.

But they changed everything.

I looked down at my baby.

My beautiful little boy.

The child Julian had rejected.

The child I had protected alone.

The child everyone suddenly wanted answers about.

“You’re saying…”

My throat tightened.

“You’re saying Adrian was his father?””

Dr. Harris nodded.

“Yes.””

A thousand emotions hit me at once.

Confusion.

Pain.

Grief.

Love.

And a strange sadness for a man I could barely remember.

Julian stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

His face was pale.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Why?””

Julian stared at him.

“Because she was with me.””

The words made my stomach twist.

I looked at Julian.

“You mean after I lost my memory?””

He went quiet.

That was the answer.

Ethan’s voice was cold.

“You built an entire life on top of a lie.””

Julian looked furious.

“You think I wanted this?””

“No,” Ethan replied.

“I think you wanted what Adrian had.””

The accusation hung in the room.

Julian looked at me.

“Vivian, please.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

His expression broke.

“I loved you.””

I almost believed him.

That was the worst part.

Because there had been moments.

Real moments.

Late nights when we laughed.

The first time he felt our baby kick.

The mornings when he made coffee and kissed my forehead.

But now I didn’t know which memories belonged to love and which belonged to guilt.

“You loved me,” I whispered.

“Or you loved the woman who didn’t remember why she should hate you?””

Julian flinched.

Nobody spoke.

Eleanor suddenly moved forward.

“This is exactly why we kept the truth from her.””

I turned toward her.

“You mean you knew?””

She didn’t answer.

“You knew my son was Adrian’s?””

Her silence confirmed everything.

I felt something inside me turn cold.

“You knew I was carrying another man’s child.””

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her voice sharpened.

“Adrian was dead. Julian was the one who stayed.””

I stared at her.

“Stayed?””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“He left me alone while I worked three jobs to survive.””

Eleanor looked away.

“He was under pressure.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Under pressure?””

I looked at Julian.

“Did your mother know?””

He didn’t answer.

That was all I needed.

My knees felt weak.

I sat back on the bed.

The baby stirred slightly.

Immediately, my anger disappeared.

I touched his tiny hand.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

Not to anyone in the room.

To him.

Because before he was even one day old, people were fighting over him.

He deserved better.

Dr. Harris stepped closer.

“There is something else.””

I looked up.

“What?””

His face was full of regret.

“When Adrian died, he left behind evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

“The documents proving his family’s crimes.””

Ethan nodded.

“He hid them before the accident.””

“Where?””

Nobody answered.

Then Eleanor spoke.

“We don’t know.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You don’t.””

The difference was obvious.

“You know where they are.””

Eleanor’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Again.

“Why does my son matter?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

Everyone became quiet.

I looked around the room.

“Why?””

Dr. Harris answered.

“Because Adrian planned for a worst-case scenario.””

“What does that mean?””

“He knew people might come after him.””

I looked at my baby.

“He protected a child who didn’t even exist yet?””

Dr. Harris nodded.

“He believed the truth had to survive.””

Ethan looked at the letter.

“Adrian told me something before he died.””

“What?””

“He said if anything happened to him, the evidence should never be found by the wrong people.””

I frowned.

“How does my baby connect to that?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because Adrian hid the final piece of evidence somewhere only you would find.””

My heart started racing.

“But I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

“Then how would I find it?””

Ethan looked at my son.

“Because Adrian believed you would become a mother.””

The room went still.

I felt tears forming.

“He knew?””

Ethan nodded.

“He always knew you wanted children.””

A memory surfaced.

A garden.

Sunlight.

A man laughing.

Me saying:

“I want a little boy someday.””

His answer:

“Then I’ll make sure he knows how loved he was before he was even born.””

I covered my mouth.

The memory disappeared before I could hold onto it.

But the feeling remained.

Love.

Real love.

A love that had existed before my life was rewritten.

The hospital monitor beside me started beeping faster.

A nurse rushed inside.

“Ms. Carter, are you alright?””

I nodded.

“I’m fine.””

But I wasn’t.

Nothing about my life was fine anymore.

The nurse looked around the room.

“Dr. Harris, there’s another issue.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

“The baby’s records were accessed.””

My stomach dropped.

“Accessed by who?””

She looked at the tablet.

“I don’t know.””

“Can you find out?””

She nodded.

“I’ll check.””

Everyone became tense.

A few minutes later, she returned.

Her face looked worried.

“The request came from someone outside the hospital.””

“Who?””

She swallowed.

“It was an emergency records request.””

“Under whose name?””

She looked at me.

“Julian Vance.””

The room exploded.

“What?””

I looked at Julian.

His face turned white.

“I didn’t do that.””

The nurse looked confused.

“But the authorization is under your account.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Of course it is.””

Julian looked at him.

“What are you implying?””

“That someone is using you.””

Julian froze.

Nobody moved.

Then Dr. Harris quietly said:

“Julian, when was the last time you accessed your account?””

Julian looked confused.

“This morning.””

“From where?””

He hesitated.

“From my phone.””

“Was anyone else near you?””

Julian’s face slowly changed.

“No.””

Then he stopped.

“What?””

He looked toward Eleanor.

His mother.

Eleanor’s expression remained calm.

Too calm.

Julian whispered:

“Mom.””

Everyone turned.

Eleanor didn’t deny it.

And that was more frightening than anything else.

“You accessed my account?””

She smiled slightly.

“I had to.””

Julian stared at her.

“Why?””

Her eyes moved to my baby.

And the softness disappeared.

“Because I needed to know if he was really Adrian’s.””

My blood ran cold.

“You tested him?””

Eleanor looked at me.

“I needed certainty.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“You took my baby’s medical information without permission.””

She ignored me.

“Because if he is Adrian’s child…”

She looked at Julian.

“…everything changes.””

Julian’s face fell.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at me.

And said the one thing that made my entire body freeze.

“Vivian, there is something Adrian never told you.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“What?””

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Your son isn’t the only thing Adrian left behind.””

A pause.

“There is another child.””

The room went completely silent.

Another child.

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

Eleanor smiled faintly.

“Is it?””

My hands tightened around my baby.

Because suddenly I understood.

This was never just about the past.

It was about something still alive.

Something Adrian had left behind.

Something someone had spent twelve years trying to hide.

Then Eleanor reached into her purse.

She pulled out a photograph.

And placed it in front of me.

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because the child in the picture had Adrian’s eyes.

And looked exactly like my son.
