Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew the Truth
The name stayed in the room long after Dr. Harris stopped speaking.
Ethan Cole.
Adrian’s brother.
The last person seen with Adrian before the accident.
I looked at my newborn son sleeping against my chest, and a terrifying thought entered my mind.
Everyone connected to my past had secrets.
Everyone except me.
For twelve years, my own life had been hidden from me.
And now, within a single day, strangers were appearing at my hospital room claiming they knew the truth.
I held my baby closer.
“Why is he here?””
Dr. Harris looked toward the door.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s a lie.””
His eyes returned to mine.
I saw hesitation.
Fear.
“You know something.””
He sighed.
“Ethan has spent twelve years searching for answers.””
“About Adrian?””
“Yes.””
“Then why shouldn’t he see me?””
Dr. Harris looked at the baby.
“Because people who carry pain for that long don’t always come looking for the truth.””
“What are they looking for?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I turned toward Julian.
He had been silent through everything.
Too silent.
“You knew Ethan would come.””
Julian’s face changed.
“I didn’t.””
“But you know him.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Julian rubbed his forehead.
“Because Ethan blamed me.””
“For what?””
He looked at me.
“For Adrian’s death.””
My stomach tightened.
“And was he wrong?””
Julian didn’t answer.
The silence felt like a confession.
Before I could ask anything else, the hospital room door opened.
A man stood outside.
He was older than Julian but carried the same sharp features.
Dark hair.
Cold eyes.
A face shaped by years of anger.
His gaze immediately found me.
Then the baby.
Everything in his expression changed.
For one second, he looked devastated.
Not angry.
Not threatening.
Just broken.
“Vivian.””
The way he said my name made my skin crawl.
Like he had been waiting twelve years to say it.
Dr. Harris stepped in front of me.
“Ethan, you need to leave.””
Ethan ignored him.
His eyes stayed on my son.
“Is that him?””
My grip tightened.
“Who are you?””
His jaw clenched.
“You really don’t remember.””
It wasn’t a question.
It was an accusation.
“I asked who you are.””
He took a step forward.
“Ethan Cole.””
The name felt heavier hearing it from his own mouth.
“I was Adrian’s brother.””
I looked at him carefully.
“Why are you here?””
His eyes moved to Julian.
And the hatred between them was immediate.
“You didn’t tell her.””
Julian stepped forward.
“This isn’t the time.””
Ethan laughed.
A bitter, humorless sound.
“Funny.””
His eyes returned to me.
“You always say that.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked at Julian.
“It means he has spent twelve years deciding what you deserve to know.””
Julian’s voice hardened.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Ethan’s voice cracked.
“Not enough.””
He pointed toward the photograph still sitting on the table.
“That woman lost twelve years of her life because of you.””
My breath caught.
“Explain.””
Julian looked at me.
“Vivian—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to stop this anymore.””
Ethan nodded slowly.
For the first time, he looked almost grateful.
“Good.””
He stepped into the room.
“Because you need to know what happened.””
Dr. Harris looked uncomfortable.
“Ethan, she just gave birth.””
“And she also spent twelve years believing a lie.””
The words hit me.
Because they were true.
“Tell me.””
Ethan looked at Julian.
“After the accident, Adrian was alive for almost three hours.””
Julian froze.
I looked at him.
“You said he died immediately.””
Julian’s face went pale.
“I…”
Ethan laughed quietly.
“Of course he did.””
My chest tightened.
“Julian?””
He looked away.
I turned back to Ethan.
“What happened during those three hours?””
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“Adrian kept asking for you.””
My eyes filled before I could stop them.
“He thought you were dead.””
“What?””
“He saw your car crash.””
I covered my mouth.
“He believed he had lost you.””
Ethan looked down.
“Then someone told him you survived.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Nobody spoke.
I already knew.
I looked at Julian.
His face answered.
“You.””
Julian swallowed.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Ethan’s voice exploded.
“Protect her?””
Everyone went silent.
“You told Adrian she abandoned him.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Julian closed his eyes.
“Vivian…”
“You told him that?””
“I didn’t know if you would remember.””
“That is not an answer.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“You had already found her by then.””
I looked at Julian.
“You found me?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After the accident.””
“And you knew I had memory loss.””
“Yes.””
My voice became quiet.
“You knew Adrian was alive.””
Julian looked broken.
“For a short time.””
“And you let him believe I left?””
Julian couldn’t speak.
The answer was obvious.
I felt something inside me break.
Not love.
That had already died.
Something else.
The belief that maybe there had been a good reason.
“There was no reason.””
Julian whispered.
“I was scared.””
I stared at him.
“You were scared?””
He nodded.
“I thought if Adrian knew where you were, he would take you away.””
The room went silent.
I felt sick.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The marriage.
The secrets.
The careful lies.
Julian hadn’t rescued me.
He had hidden me.
Ethan wiped his face angrily.
“Adrian died believing the woman he loved chose to leave him.””
I looked down at my son.
A child who carried the face of a man I never remembered.
“I don’t understand.””
Ethan looked at me.
“That’s because there’s more.””
My heart sank.
“What more?””
He reached into his coat pocket.
Julian immediately reacted.
“Don’t.””
Ethan ignored him.
He pulled out an old envelope.
The paper was worn.
Yellowed by time.
He placed it on the table.
“Adrian wrote this before he died.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn’t I get it?””
Ethan looked at Julian.
“Because he never sent it.””
My fingers trembled.
“What does it say?””
Ethan hesitated.
Then he pushed the envelope toward me.
“You should read it yourself.””
I reached for it.
But before my fingers touched the paper, Julian spoke.
“Vivian.””
I looked up.
His eyes were filled with fear.
“If you open that…”
He stopped.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“If you open that letter, you’ll know why I married you.””
The room became completely silent.
I slowly turned toward him.
“What does that mean?””
Julian looked at the letter.
Then at me.
And for the first time since I met him, he looked like someone who had no way out.
“Because Adrian didn’t just write about losing you.””
He whispered:
“He wrote about the person who caused it.””
My hand froze above the envelope.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan looked at Julian.
May you like
And said the words that changed everything.
“He wrote your husband’s name.””
