Chapter 6: The Letter That Was Never Sent
The envelope sat on the table between us.
A thin piece of paper.
A lifetime of secrets.
My hands hovered over it, afraid to touch something that could destroy everything I thought I knew.
Adrian Cole had written my name on that envelope twelve years ago.
A man I couldn’t remember.
A man everyone kept telling me I loved.
A man who died believing I had abandoned him.
And inside that envelope was the truth.
My eyes moved to Julian.
He looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
That was when I knew.
Whatever was inside that letter was something he had spent twelve years trying to bury.
“Open it.””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Julian shook his head.
“Vivian—”
“No.””
I looked directly at him.
“You have taken enough from me.””
His face tightened.
“You don’t understand what you’re about to read.””
I almost smiled.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I reached for the envelope.
My fingers touched the old paper.
And suddenly, a memory flashed.
A man’s voice.
Warm.
Gentle.
“Promise me you’ll never stop fighting.””
I froze.
My heart raced.
A hand holding mine.
A familiar laugh.
A feeling I couldn’t name.
Then it disappeared.
I pulled my hand back.
Dr. Harris noticed.
“Vivian?””
I swallowed.
“I remembered something.””
Everyone became still.
“What?””
I looked at the envelope.
“His voice.””
Ethan’s expression softened.
“Adrian.””
I nodded slowly.
“I don’t know his face.””
Tears burned my eyes.
“But I remembered his voice.””
For the first time, Ethan looked less like an angry stranger.
He looked like someone who had been waiting years for proof that Adrian had not been forgotten.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
The handwriting was uneven.
Like someone writing while in pain.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
The first line made my breath stop.
*Vivian, if you are reading this, something went wrong.*
I covered my mouth.
The room disappeared.
There was only the letter.
Only his words.
*I don’t know where you are right now. I don’t know if you remember me. But I need you to know one thing. I never stopped looking for you.*
My eyes blurred.
I continued.
*Tonight, Julian came to see me. He told me you were gone. He told me you left because you found out the truth about my family.*
My heartbeat became louder.
*But I don’t believe him.*
I looked up.
Julian had gone completely pale.
Ethan stared at him.
I lowered my eyes back to the page.
*You would never leave without saying goodbye. Not after everything we promised each other.*
A tear fell onto the paper.
*Julian says he is helping you. He says you need someone because you don’t remember. But something about this feels wrong.*
My breathing became uneven.
*If Julian finds you before I do, please be careful. He is not the person you think he is.*
The words cut through me.
I looked at Julian.
He couldn’t meet my eyes.
I kept reading.
*I trusted him like a brother. That was my mistake.*
The room was silent.
Even the machines beside my bed seemed quieter.
*If something happens to me, Ethan knows where I hid the evidence. He knows the truth about what Julian did.*
My fingers tightened around the letter.
Evidence.
What evidence?
I continued.
*Vivian, I am sorry you have to learn everything this way. I am sorry I couldn’t protect you. But please remember this: our love was real. Every moment was real.*
My vision blurred.
Then came the final paragraph.
*And if you ever have a child one day, tell them about me. Tell them their father loved them before they were even born.*
I stopped.
My breath caught.
The letter slipped slightly in my hand.
“My child…”
The room went silent.
Ethan looked at me.
“Adrian knew?””
I looked up.
“He wrote about a child.””
Ethan’s face changed.
Julian looked horrified.
“No.””
The word escaped him.
I turned toward him.
“What?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“You knew.””
His eyes moved toward the letter.
“You knew about this.””
Julian stepped back.
“I didn’t know about the child.””
“Not that.””
My voice became colder.
“You knew Adrian believed we would have a child.””
Silence.
That was enough.
I looked at Dr. Harris.
“Did everyone know except me?””
He looked away.
The answer hurt.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Julian was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Ethan’s eyes hardened.
“That Adrian’s child would expose everything.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Julian suddenly moved.
“Ethan, stop.””
“No.””
Ethan turned toward him.
“You don’t get to hide anymore.””
I looked between them.
“What is he talking about?””
Ethan took a deep breath.
“Adrian discovered something about Julian’s family.””
“What?””
“Illegal business dealings.””
Julian’s face changed.
“You don’t know what you’re saying.””
“I know exactly what I’m saying.””
Ethan’s voice was steady.
“My brother found documents proving Julian’s father had been using the company to hide money.””
Dr. Harris nodded slowly.
“Adrian came to me before he died.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did he say?””
“He said he was going to expose them.””
I looked at Julian.
“And you knew?””
Julian didn’t answer.
“Did you?””
Finally, he whispered:
“Yes.””
The room went cold.
I stared at the man I had married.
The man who had held me while I cried.
The man who had promised forever.
“You knew he was in danger.””
Julian’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t think they would hurt him.””
“Who?””
He said nothing.
“Who, Julian?””
Before he could answer, the door opened.
A hospital security officer stepped inside.
“Dr. Harris?””
Everyone turned.
“There’s a situation downstairs.””
“What situation?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“A woman is demanding to see Vivian Carter.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
The officer checked his notes.
“She says she is your mother-in-law.””
Eleanor.
Of course.
I felt my entire body tense.
“Let her in.””
Julian immediately reacted.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His silence was all I needed.
The door opened again.
Eleanor Vance walked in.
Perfectly dressed.
Perfectly composed.
Like she wasn’t entering a hospital room where my entire life had just fallen apart.
Her eyes immediately landed on the letter in my hand.
And for the first time ever…
I saw fear on her face.
Not anger.
Not superiority.
Fear.
“You opened it.””
Nobody spoke.
Eleanor looked at Julian.
“You let her open it?””
Julian looked away.
That single moment told me everything.
They had both known.
They had both been protecting the same secret.
I stood there holding my newborn son.
And I finally understood something.
My marriage had not ended because Julian stopped loving me.
It had ended because the truth was coming back.
And they were desperate to stop it.
Eleanor slowly stepped closer.
“Vivian, you need to listen to me.””
I laughed quietly.
“No.””
She stopped.
“I have listened to everyone for twelve years.””
My voice shook.
“I listened when you called me a gold digger.””
I looked at Julian.
“I listened when he abandoned me.””
Then I looked back at her.
“I listened while all of you decided what my life should be.””
Her expression hardened.
“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””
I looked at the letter.
Then at my son.
“I think I’m finally starting to.””
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.
Then she said something that made the entire room freeze.
“Before you accuse my son, you should ask Dr. Harris why Adrian’s DNA is a match.””
My blood turned cold.
“What?””
She smiled faintly.
Not kindly.
Like someone who had just revealed a winning card.
“Ask him.””
Everyone looked at Dr. Harris.
The doctor who had held my son.
The doctor who had cried when he saw his face.
His expression collapsed.
Because whatever Eleanor had just said…
He knew it was true.
And then Dr. Harris whispered:
“Vivian…”
He looked at my baby.
“I need to tell you something.””
A pause.
Something terrifying passed through his eyes.
“Your son is not just connected to Adrian.””
May you like
He swallowed.
“He is the reason Adrian’s secret survived.””
