Chapter 8: The Three Hours Nobody Told Me About

The question hung in the room.

“What happened to my baby while I was unconscious?””

Nobody answered.

And somehow, that silence was more terrifying than any lie I had heard before.

I looked at Dr. Reed.

The man who had delivered my child.

The man who had watched me become a mother.

The man who knew the truth while I spent months believing I understood the most important day of my life.

“Please,” I whispered.

My voice broke.

“I need to know.””

Dr. Reed looked down.

“I was hoping you would never have to hear this.””

My chest tightened.

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

He nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Tell us everything.””

Dr. Reed took a deep breath.

“The delivery was complicated.””

I frowned.

“I know it was difficult.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I mean there were complications that were never written in your official file.””

My heart started racing.

“What complications?””

He looked at me.

“You lost a lot of blood.””

My fingers tightened around Noah’s blanket.

“I remember being tired.””

“You were more than tired.””

He paused.

“You were unconscious.””

The room felt like it was spinning.

“But Noah was okay.””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Dr. Reed looked at the photograph.

“While you were unconscious, Claire Bennett was brought into the room.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Why?””

Dr. Reed looked at him.

“Because Linda requested it.””

The words hit like a physical blow.

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Linda.

Every road led back to her.

“She brought another woman into my delivery room?””

Dr. Reed looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His silence answered before he did.

“Because she wanted to create confusion.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He stepped back.

“My mother wouldn’t…”

He stopped.

Because even he couldn’t finish that sentence anymore.

Dr. Reed continued.

“Linda believed that if Claire’s identity became connected to Noah, she could create a legal argument later.””

My voice trembled.

“A legal argument?””

“Yes.””

“To take my son?””

Dr. Reed looked at me.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because I didn’t know Linda wanted Noah.

I knew.

But hearing that she had been planning it before I even held him for the first time was different.

She wasn’t reacting.

She was preparing.

“She planned this before Noah was born,” I whispered.

Dr. Reed nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel covered his face with his hands.

“How did I not see any of this?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question everyone carried.

How did a family built on love become a place filled with secrets?

Dr. Reed showed us another document.

A hospital incident report.

But unlike the other files, this one had never been altered.

“This was hidden because Linda didn’t know it existed.””

I looked at the report.

The date.

The time.

Everything matched the day Noah was born.

Then I saw something that made my hands shake.

A signature.

Claire Bennett.

“What did she sign?””

Dr. Reed looked at me.

“A statement.””

I read the first line.

*I confirm that the child delivered on this date was not my child.*

My eyes widened.

I looked up.

“What?””

Daniel grabbed the paper.

He read it quickly.

Then looked at Dr. Reed.

“Explain.””

Dr. Reed nodded.

“Claire was never Noah’s mother.””

The words hit me.

I almost couldn’t breathe.

“Then why was her name on the records?””

“Because Linda wanted it there.””

“But why?””

Dr. Reed looked at the documents.

“Because Linda needed a connection between Claire and Noah.””

“For what?””

“To make it appear that Ava’s maternity was questionable.””

My stomach turned.

She had built a fake story.

A fake mother.

A fake DNA report.

A fake history.

All to make me look like an outsider in my own child’s life.

“But Claire knew?””

“Yes.””

“What happened to her?””

Dr. Reed’s expression darkened.

“That is the question your father was trying to answer.””

Daniel looked up.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“He knew Claire wasn’t Noah’s mother?””

“He knew the records were false.””

Dr. Reed opened another file.

“He was trying to find Claire because she was the only person who could prove what happened.””

My heart sank.

“And she disappeared.””

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Because now the mystery had a shape.

Someone had been trying to erase everyone who knew the truth.

Claire.

Daniel’s father.

Anyone who could expose the plan.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Everyone became still.

I almost didn’t answer.

But something inside me told me I needed to.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a woman spoke.

“Ava?””

My blood went cold.

I knew that voice.

Not because I had heard it recently.

Because I had heard it in the photograph.

“Claire?””

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked at me.

Dr. Reed stood up.

“Ava, where are you?””

Claire sounded afraid.

“I don’t have much time.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Where have you been?””

A shaky breath.

“Trying to survive.””

The words made my stomach drop.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Linda Carter is not the person you should be afraid of.””

Everyone looked at each other.

Daniel immediately grabbed the phone.

“Claire, this is Daniel.””

Silence.

Then:

“Daniel.””

Her voice changed.

Like hearing his name brought back something painful.

“You need to listen to me.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Why should I trust you?””

“Because your father trusted me.””

The room froze.

“What?””

Claire continued.

“He was the only person who believed me.””

Daniel looked at Dr. Reed.

Then back at the phone.

“My father is dead.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me why you disappeared.””

Claire was silent.

When she answered, her voice was shaking.

“Because someone tried to kill me.””

Nobody breathed.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel looked furious.

“You expect us to believe that?””

“I expect you to look at the evidence.””

Her voice became stronger.

“Your father was investigating the hospital. He discovered that people were selling confidential genetic information.””

Dr. Reed nodded slowly.

Claire continued.

“And when he got too close, they needed someone to blame.””

My stomach tightened.

“Blame who?””

A pause.

Then Claire said:

“Ava.””

I felt frozen.

“What?””

“They planned to make it look like Ava had lied about Noah’s birth.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why?””

“Because Ava was the only person who had no connection to their plan.””

I looked at Noah.

My baby.

The person everyone was fighting over.

The person who had become evidence in a war he never chose.

Claire continued.

“Linda wanted custody.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“And my father?””

“He tried to stop her.””

The line went quiet.

Then Claire whispered:

“He found out the truth the night before he died.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What truth?””

Claire hesitated.

“I don’t know if I should tell you over the phone.””

“Tell me.””

“No.””

“Claire.””

Her voice became urgent.

“Daniel, you need to understand. The person behind all of this is still watching.””

A chill moved through me.

“What person?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Instead, she said:

“Look at the original hospital records.””

“We already did.””

“No.””

Her voice became sharper.

“Look at the last page.””

Dr. Reed immediately turned toward the documents.

“What last page?””

Claire whispered:

“The page they tried to remove.””

Everyone moved.

Dr. Reed opened the folder.

He flipped through the pages.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dr. Reed?””

Slowly, he pulled out a hidden page.

A page attached beneath the original file.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

Then froze.

“What is it?””

Dr. Reed stared at the paper.

His voice was barely audible.

“It’s a consent form.””

“For what?””

He looked at me.

My heart sank.

“An emergency transfer.””

I frowned.

“Transfer of what?””

Dr. Reed swallowed.

“Custody.””

The room went silent.

A hospital custody transfer.

Signed the day Noah was born.

But the signature at the bottom wasn’t Linda’s.

It wasn’t Claire’s.

It wasn’t mine.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone who had no right to sign anything.

And when Daniel saw the name…

He dropped the paper.

Because the person who authorized the transfer was not a stranger.

It was someone who had been protecting our family for years.

Someone we thought was on our side.

May you like

The signature belonged to…

Daniel Carter.
