Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew the Truth
The name on the paper seemed impossible.
Dr. Samuel Reed.
A man I had trusted.
A man who had smiled at me during the hardest moments of my life.
A man who had held Noah in his arms and called him “a miracle.””
Now his name was sitting on a piece of paper connected to the biggest betrayal I had ever faced.
I stared at the handwriting.
*Do not trust him. He knows what happened to Noah’s real records.*
My mind searched through every memory I had of Dr. Reed.
The day Noah was born.
The hospital room.
His calm voice.
His reassuring smile.
“You did amazing, Ava,” he had told me.
“You have a beautiful, healthy baby boy.””
Those words had meant everything to me.
Now I wondered if they had been part of a lie.
Daniel folded the paper slowly.
His hands were shaking.
“My father trusted him.””
Rachel nodded.
“They were best friends for almost twenty years.””
“Then why would he do this?””
Nobody answered.
Because there was only one way to find out.
We needed to talk to Dr. Samuel Reed.
But this time, we weren’t walking into his office as patients.
We were walking in knowing he might have been hiding the truth from us.
The next morning, Daniel called Dr. Reed.
He didn’t mention the letter.
He didn’t mention Rachel’s confession.
He simply asked for a meeting.
Dr. Reed agreed immediately.
That almost bothered me more.
Someone innocent would have questions.
Someone innocent would be confused.
But he sounded calm.
Too calm.
His office was exactly how I remembered it.
The same wooden shelves.
The same framed certificates.
The same old photograph of him and Daniel’s father standing together at a charity event.
A picture of two friends.
A picture of trust.
Dr. Reed smiled when we entered.
“Daniel. Ava.””
Then his eyes moved to Noah.
“And there’s my little friend.””
My body immediately stiffened.
Little friend.
That was what he had always called him.
He stepped forward.
I moved slightly in front of the stroller.
A small movement.
But he noticed.
His smile faded.
“Is everything okay?””
Daniel closed the door behind us.
“No.””
The room became quiet.
Dr. Reed looked between us.
“What happened?””
Daniel placed the old letter on the desk.
Dr. Reed’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Recognition.
Fear.
Then it disappeared.
“Where did you get this?””
Daniel stared at him.
“You know what it is?””
Dr. Reed didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“My father wrote this.””
“Yes.””
“And he mentioned you.””
A pause.
Dr. Reed looked away.
“What did he say?””
I stepped forward.
“He said not to trust you.””
The words hit him.
Not with anger.
With sadness.
Dr. Reed closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked like an old man carrying something too heavy.
“I was afraid this day would come.””
My heart started racing.
“Afraid?””
Dr. Reed looked at me.
“You deserve the truth.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Then tell us.””
The doctor sat down slowly.
“I never wanted any of this to happen.””
I almost laughed.
That sentence again.
Everyone who hurt us seemed to say the same thing.
“I never wanted this.””
“But you let it happen,” Daniel said.
Dr. Reed looked at him.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised us.
He didn’t deny it.
He didn’t fight.
He simply accepted it.
And somehow, that made it worse.
“What did you do?”” Daniel asked.
Dr. Reed looked at Noah.
Then at me.
“I protected a secret.””
My stomach tightened.
“What secret?””
He took a deep breath.
“The day Noah was born was not the first day this started.””
“What does that mean?””
Dr. Reed looked at Daniel.
“Your father discovered something about your family before Noah was born.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“A problem with the Carter family records.””
“What problem?””
Dr. Reed hesitated.
“Your father believed someone had been altering important documents for years.””
My skin went cold.
“Why?””
Dr. Reed looked down.
“Because someone wanted control.””
The answer was too vague.
I stepped closer.
“Control over what?””
He looked at me.
“Over Daniel.””
The room went silent.
Daniel shook his head.
“My mother?””
Dr. Reed didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Daniel looked devastated.
“She did this because she wanted control over me?””
“Yes.””
“But Rachel said she was trying to protect me.””
Dr. Reed sighed.
“Linda convinced herself that everything she did was love.””
His voice became quieter.
“But love does not justify destroying people.””
For the first time, I heard someone say exactly what I had been feeling.
Daniel looked at him.
“Did you change Noah’s records?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“I did not.””
“Then why does my father’s note mention you?””
Dr. Reed looked at the letter.
“Because I helped him find the truth.””
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
“And then?””
Dr. Reed didn’t speak.
The silence was the answer.
“And then you stopped.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Dr. Reed looked broken.
“Because I was afraid.””
The room went still.
“I was afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.””
I stared at him.
“You were afraid?””
My voice shook.
“Do you know what happened to me?””
He looked at me.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I pointed toward Noah.
“You knew someone was trying to take my child away from me.””
Dr. Reed lowered his head.
“And I failed to stop it.””
The admission hurt.
Because it meant he knew.
He knew.
While I was crying.
While I was being accused.
While I was begging people to believe me.
He knew something.
And he stayed silent.
“Why?”” I whispered.
Dr. Reed looked at me.
“Because Linda threatened to destroy Daniel’s life.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She told me if I exposed her, she would release information that would ruin Daniel.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What information?””
Dr. Reed looked at him.
“About your father’s death.””
Nobody moved.
There it was again.
The secret nobody wanted to discuss.
“What about my father’s death?””
Dr. Reed took a shaky breath.
“Your father didn’t simply die.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying your father discovered too much.””
The room felt freezing.
“You think my mother had something to do with it?””
Dr. Reed looked away.
“I think Linda was involved in something she could no longer control.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Did she kill him?””
Dr. Reed immediately shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
The answer was honest.
But it didn’t make it less terrifying.
“What do you know?””
Dr. Reed looked at Noah.
“I know your father was trying to protect him.””
He pointed gently toward Noah.
“He knew this child was connected to something much bigger.””
I felt my heart race.
“How?””
Dr. Reed opened a drawer.
Then removed a small envelope.
“I kept this because I promised your father I would.””
Daniel stared.
“What is it?””
“The final evidence he collected before he died.””
My hands became cold.
“Why are you giving it to us now?””
Dr. Reed looked at me.
“Because the fake DNA report proved they were willing to take things further than I imagined.””
He pushed the envelope across the desk.
“And because I realized staying silent was hurting the innocent person your father wanted to protect.””
Daniel picked up the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
An old photograph.
My breath caught.
Because I recognized the hospital room.
The date.
The day Noah was born.
But something was wrong.
There were three people in the picture.
Me.
Noah.
And someone else standing near the hospital bed.
Someone I had never seen before.
Daniel looked at the photo.
Then at Dr. Reed.
“Who is that woman?””
Dr. Reed’s face became pale.
“That…”
He stopped.
Then whispered:
“That is Claire Bennett.””
The name from the altered birth records.
The woman who supposedly gave birth to Noah.
I looked at the picture again.
And my blood ran cold.
Because Claire wasn’t a stranger.
She was standing beside my hospital bed.
Holding newborn Noah.
And behind the photograph was a handwritten message.
A message from Daniel’s father.
*Ava, if you are reading this, it means they failed to erase the truth.*
My hands trembled.
I turned the photo over.
There was one more sentence.
*Noah was born from a secret that someone killed to protect.*
And below it…
Was a date.
May you like
A date six months before Noah’s birth.
The day Claire Bennett disappeared.
