Chapter 7: The Woman Who Disappeared

The photograph shook in my hands.

I had seen hundreds of pictures of Noah.

His first smile.

His first bath.

His tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

But this picture was different.

This picture wasn’t a memory.

It was evidence.

Evidence that someone had been standing beside me during the most important moment of my life.

Someone I didn’t know.

Someone whose name had been hidden from me.

Claire Bennett.

The woman who supposedly gave birth to my son.

The woman whose name had appeared in altered hospital records.

The woman who had disappeared six months before Noah was born.

I looked at Dr. Reed.

“Tell me everything.””

My voice sounded calmer than I felt.

But inside, I was breaking.

Dr. Reed looked at the photograph.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know enough.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Daniel grabbed the edge of the desk.

“Then start talking.””

Dr. Reed nodded slowly.

“Claire Bennett was one of the hospital’s patients seven years ago.””

“Seven years ago?”” Daniel asked.

“Yes.””

“Before Noah was born?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Then why is she connected to Noah?””

Dr. Reed hesitated.

“Because Claire was involved in something your father discovered.””

“What?””

“A private adoption arrangement.””

The words landed like a shock.

I stared at him.

“Adoption?””

Dr. Reed nodded.

“But not the kind you’re thinking of.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

“Claire was pregnant.””

The room became silent.

“And?””

Dr. Reed looked down.

“She was told her baby would be taken away.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because someone had arranged it.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Who?””

Dr. Reed didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because after everything we had learned, silence was never empty.

Silence meant someone was hiding something.

“Who?”” Daniel asked again.

Dr. Reed finally spoke.

“Your father believed it was connected to Linda.””

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

Like his mind refused to accept it.

“My mother?””

“She was involved.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked devastated.

Not angry.

Not yet.

Just hurt.

Because no matter what Linda had done, she was still his mother.

And learning that someone you love has built their life around lies is a different kind of pain.

“What did Linda want from Claire?”” I asked.

Dr. Reed looked at me.

“The baby.””

My breath caught.

“No.””

He nodded.

“She believed the child would become part of the Carter family.””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“But why?””

Dr. Reed looked at the photograph.

“Because Claire’s child was important.””

“Important how?””

He didn’t answer.

I felt frustration rise inside me.

“Everyone keeps saying there is a secret.””

I placed the photo on the table.

“Everyone keeps acting like Noah is some mystery.””

My voice cracked.

“He is a baby.””

I looked at all of them.

“He is not a piece in some family battle.””

Nobody spoke.

Because they knew I was right.

Noah was not a secret.

He was my son.

He was a person.

And everyone had forgotten that while chasing whatever truth they wanted.

Dr. Reed looked ashamed.

“You’re right.””

I looked at him.

“So tell us.””

He nodded.

“Claire Bennett was carrying a child connected to a medical research case.””

Daniel frowned.

“Research?””

“Yes.””

“What kind?””

Dr. Reed hesitated.

“A rare genetic condition.””

My heart sank.

“Was Noah sick?””

“No.””

He answered quickly.

“Noah was healthy.””

“Then why does this matter?””

“Because Claire’s pregnancy was part of a confidential study.””

Daniel looked confused.

“And my father found out?””

“Yes.””

Dr. Reed opened another drawer.

He removed a folder.

“Your father believed the study was being used for something else.””

“What?””

“Financial gain.””

The room went quiet.

“Someone was collecting genetic information from families without proper consent.””

My stomach turned.

“And Claire?””

“She discovered what was happening.””

Dr. Reed looked at the photograph.

“She tried to expose it.””

Daniel stared.

“And my mother was involved?””

Dr. Reed nodded.

“Linda was connected to the people funding the project.””

I felt sick.

All this time, I thought Linda hated me because she didn’t think I was good enough.

But maybe it was something much bigger.

Maybe Noah wasn’t just a child she wanted to control.

Maybe he was proof of something she wanted buried.

We spent the next hour going through the documents Dr. Reed had hidden.

Reports.

Emails.

Copies of hospital records.

Everything pointed to one thing.

A pattern.

Years of altered information.

Missing files.

Changed identities.

People who asked questions suddenly disappearing from the picture.

And in the middle of it all was Claire Bennett.

“She disappeared after she reported the hospital,” Dr. Reed said.

Daniel looked at him.

“What happened to her?””

“We don’t know.””

“You mean nobody looked?””

Dr. Reed looked away.

“I tried.””

“And?””

“I was warned to stop.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“By who?””

Dr. Reed didn’t answer.

Again.

That silence.

I was tired of silence.

“Telling us half the truth doesn’t protect anyone.””

Dr. Reed looked at me.

“I know.””

“Then tell us.””

He took a breath.

“The warning came from someone close to your father.””

Daniel froze.

“Who?””

Dr. Reed looked at him.

“Your uncle.””

Daniel stared.

“My father’s brother?””

“Yes.””

“But my uncle died years ago.””

Dr. Reed nodded.

“Before he died, he was also investigating the same thing.””

The room felt like it was filling with ghosts.

Everyone connected to this mystery was gone.

Everyone except the people who benefited from keeping it hidden.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He just turned the phone toward us.

The caller name appeared.

*Linda.*

Nobody spoke.

Daniel answered.

“Mom.””

Her voice came through immediately.

“Daniel, where are you?””

His expression hardened.

“Why?””

“Because I know you found the files.””

Silence.

She knew.

“How?””

Linda ignored the question.

“You need to listen to me.””

Daniel stood.

“No. You need to explain.””

Her voice became emotional.

“I did things I shouldn’t have done.””

I almost laughed.

An apology now?

After everything?

“You lied to me,” Daniel said.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

A pause.

Then Linda said:

“From the truth about Noah.””

My entire body went cold.

Daniel looked at me.

“What truth?””

Linda’s voice dropped.

“The truth that Ava doesn’t know.””

I felt my heart stop.

“What are you talking about?””

Linda continued.

“There is something about Noah’s birth that even Ava was never told.””

I stepped closer to the phone.

“Linda.””

She became quiet.

Then she said:

“Ava, you need to know something.””

My hands tightened.

“What?””

Linda whispered:

“You were not supposed to be the person who gave birth to Noah.””

The words felt like a knife.

Daniel immediately shouted:

“Stop lying!””

But Linda continued.

“You think you remember everything about that day.””

A pause.

“But you don’t.””

I felt dizzy.

Because deep inside, a tiny fear appeared.

Not because I believed her.

But because she sounded certain.

“What are you saying?”” I whispered.

Linda’s voice became softer.

“The hospital records were changed because someone wanted to hide the truth.””

Daniel interrupted.

“You changed them.””

“No.””

Linda’s answer was immediate.

“I tried to reveal what someone else changed.””

Everyone froze.

Dr. Reed looked at the phone.

Linda continued.

“Ask Dr. Reed why he never told Ava what happened during delivery.””

My eyes moved toward him.

And Dr. Reed looked away.

That was the moment my heart sank.

Because Linda was lying about many things.

But one thing was clear.

There was still something nobody had told me.

Something about the day Noah was born.

“Dr. Reed?”” I asked.

He didn’t respond.

“Tell me.””

His face tightened.

“Ava…”

“Tell me the truth.””

He looked at Noah.

Then at me.

Finally, he whispered:

“There was an emergency during your delivery.””

My breath stopped.

“What emergency?””

Dr. Reed’s voice became barely audible.

“You lost consciousness.””

I stared at him.

“That’s not possible.””

“It happened.””

“How long?””

He hesitated.

“Almost three hours.””

The room went silent.

Three hours.

Three hours I didn’t remember.

Three hours where someone else had access to my child.

And then Dr. Reed said the words that changed everything.

“During those three hours…”

He looked at me.

“Claire Bennett was in the room.””

My entire body went cold.

Because suddenly the photograph made sense.

The unknown woman beside my bed.

The altered records.

The missing files.

And the question I had been afraid to ask finally came out.

“What happened to my baby while I was unconscious?””
