Chapter 3: The Name Hidden in the Records
The name on the screen felt like a second explosion.
Not as loud as the first.
Not as dramatic.
But somehow, it hurt even more.
Because Linda had been the enemy I could see.
This person was someone I had trusted.
Someone who had stood beside me while I held Noah in my arms.
Someone who had looked me in the eyes and pretended everything was normal.
Daniel stared at the record.
His face had gone completely pale.
“Say that again,” he whispered.
Dr. Parker looked uncomfortable.
“I said this person accessed Noah’s medical file before the DNA report was altered.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?””
The doctor hesitated.
Then she turned the screen toward him.
“Rachel Carter.””
My heart stopped.
Rachel.
Daniel’s younger sister.
My sister-in-law.
The woman who had brought me flowers when Noah was born.
The woman who had cried when she first held him.
The woman who told me, “You’re the sister I always wished I had.””
No.
It couldn’t be.
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in that room knew what it meant.
Rachel had access.
Rachel had opportunity.
And Rachel had been there.
A thousand small moments suddenly came rushing back.
Moments I had ignored.
Moments I had explained away.
The way Rachel always asked about Noah’s schedule.
The way she wanted to know which doctor I used.
The way she kept asking about our family documents.
At the time, I thought she was being supportive.
Now, every memory felt different.
Daniel looked at Dr. Parker.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes,” she replied.
“The hospital system records every person who accesses confidential files. Rachel Carter’s employee credentials were used to view Noah’s information.””
Daniel froze.
“Employee credentials?””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
He swallowed.
“Rachel works in medical administration at another hospital. She has access to healthcare systems.””
The room felt smaller.
Linda looked nervous.
Not angry.
Nervous.
And that was the first thing that made me wonder.
Maybe Linda wasn’t the only person who had planned this.
“Mom,” Daniel said slowly.
Linda avoided his eyes.
“Did Rachel help you?””
Silence.
A horrible, painful silence.
I watched Linda’s face.
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Daniel took a step back.
“Oh my God.””
“No,” Linda said quickly.
“No, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain!””
His voice echoed through the office.
Linda looked at him.
“I only asked her to help me understand the situation.””
I stared at her.
“Understand?””
My voice shook.
“You asked your daughter to access my child’s medical records.””
Linda looked away.
“I was worried.””
“You were suspicious.””
She didn’t deny it.
That hurt.
Because denial would have been easier.
A lie would have been expected.
But her silence was a confession.
Dr. Parker carefully gathered the papers.
“The altered DNA report could not have happened without someone accessing the original data.””
Mr. Hayes looked at Linda.
“And Rachel appears to have had that access.””
Linda immediately stood.
“You’re all acting like I committed some crime.””
Nobody spoke.
She looked around the room.
“I was trying to protect my family.””
I felt something inside me break.
“Your family?””
Linda looked at me.
“Yes.””
I held Noah tighter.
“Then what am I?””
For the first time, Linda had no answer.
Because she had never seen me as family.
Not really.
I was just someone who married her son.
Someone who changed the balance of power she had controlled for years.
Daniel walked toward the door.
“We need to find Rachel.””
Linda grabbed his arm.
“Daniel, wait.””
He looked down at her hand.
Then at her face.
“Did you know?””
Linda’s eyes filled with tears.
“I knew she was looking into things.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
His voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“Did you know she changed the report?””
Linda looked away.
And that was when Daniel understood.
“You knew.””
The pain in his voice was worse than anger.
“You both did this.””
Linda shook her head.
“I didn’t want things to go this far.””
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Because people always said that after they had already destroyed everything.
“You didn’t want things to go this far?””
I stepped closer.
“You wanted me to lose my child.””
Linda looked at Noah.
And for a second, I saw something cold in her expression.
Not hatred.
Something worse.
Possession.
“He is my grandson.””
I stared at her.
“He is my son.””
The room went quiet.
That was the first time I said it without fear.
Not because I needed to convince her.
Because I needed to remind myself.
I was Noah’s mother.
No fake report could change that.
No lie could erase every night I held him.
No one could rewrite reality.
But someone had tried.
And I needed to know why.
Rachel answered on the fourth call.
Daniel put his phone on speaker.
The sound of her voice immediately filled the room.
“Daniel? What’s wrong? Why are you calling me so many times?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel said:
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“What?””
“Where are you, Rachel?””
Her voice changed.
“I’m at home.””
Daniel looked at Dr. Parker.
Then back at the phone.
“We know about the file access.””
Silence.
A long silence.
My hands became cold.
“Rachel?””
Her breathing changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Don’t lie to me.””
Another pause.
Then Rachel said something that made my entire body freeze.
“I was trying to help Mom.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The truth.
Not hidden anymore.
Not protected.
Just sitting there in the open.
Daniel looked like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“Help her do what?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
“Rachel.””
Her voice became softer.
“You don’t understand.””
I stepped closer to the phone.
“Then explain it to me.””
The line went silent.
Then Rachel whispered:
“Ava?””
“Yes.””
She took a shaky breath.
“I never wanted you to get hurt.””
My anger rose.
“But you changed my child’s DNA report.””
“No.””
Her answer came quickly.
“I didn’t change it.””
Everyone looked at each other.
Rachel continued.
“I only gave Mom access.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Access to what?””
Rachel was crying now.
“To the original information.””
My heart dropped.
She had opened the door.
Someone else had walked through it.
“Why?”” Daniel asked.
Rachel sobbed quietly.
“Because Mom promised she could fix everything.””
“What does that mean?””
No answer.
“Rachel!””
Finally, she whispered:
“She said if Ava lost custody…”
I stopped breathing.
“…then Daniel would finally leave her.””
The words were unbearable.
Even though I had suspected it, hearing it out loud was different.
Linda wanted me gone.
Not temporarily.
Not for a disagreement.
Forever.
Daniel slowly turned toward his mother.
“You were going to make me lose my wife.””
Linda’s face crumbled.
“I was trying to save you.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You were trying to control me.””
Before anyone could respond, Rachel suddenly spoke again.
“Daniel.””
Her voice sounded terrified.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone became still.
“What?””
“I found out after I helped Mom.””
“What did you find out?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“The DNA report wasn’t the only thing that was changed.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What else?””
Rachel took a shaky breath.
“Someone changed Noah’s birth records too.””
My grip tightened around my son.
“What?””
“The hospital file,” Rachel said.
“The one showing who was present during the delivery.””
Dr. Parker stepped forward.
“What are you saying?””
Rachel cried harder.
“I’m saying someone tried to create a completely different story about Noah’s birth.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why would anyone do that?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was terrifying.
This wasn’t just about making Daniel doubt me.
This was about rewriting the history of my child.
Then Rachel said the one sentence that made the entire room go silent.
“Because Mom wasn’t trying to prove Ava was a bad mother.””
A pause.
“She was trying to prove Ava was never Noah’s real mother at all.””
My blood ran cold.
And then Dr. Parker looked at the documents again.
Her eyes widened.
“Oh no.””
“What?”” I asked.
She turned the page.
“There’s a missing record.””
“What record?””
Her voice dropped.
“The original delivery room file.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why does that matter?””
Dr. Parker looked directly at me.
“Because according to the hospital system…”
She stopped.
Then slowly continued.
“The woman listed as Noah’s birth mother was not Ava Carter.””
I felt the room disappear.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
I had carried him.
I had felt his first heartbeat.
I had held him the moment he was born.
But the doctor’s next words made every person in that room question everything.
“The records say another woman gave birth to Noah.””
And attached to that file…
Was a name.
May you like
A name I had never heard before.
But one that would change my entire life.
